Feats and Traits ideas
Lephys replied to konst3d's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
O_O... I'm not trying to be snide here, but I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. I think you might've misunderstood me? But, I'm not sure exactly where/how, so I don't know how/what to clarify. I wasn't talking about having all the attributes provide some positive modifier for all the mechanical values in the game, if that helps at all. All I was talking about, to put it simply, was having more than just a single factor to decide something like Accuracy. I think a game in which character A and character B can both have 15 DEX, but still have differing Accuracy ratings with various weapons and/or in various circumstances is a lot more interesting than one in which they both have the same Accuracy ratings no matter what, just to present the simplest example of the idea that I can. I'm aware that we already know that, in PoE, at the very least, Fighters get an Accuracy bonus with melee weapons. Not to mention weapon-set proficiencies. So, I'd figure there are probably other modifiers, as well, throughout the entirety of the game, than just one or two Fighter things. But, the "Might could let you wield a huge weapon with 100% effectiveness instead of lesser effectiveness" bit was just an example of the type of thing that I think makes the system more interesting. You can have a character with awesome DEX, but lesser MIG, and he can wield a giant weapon if he needs to (maybe you need the raw damage of that weapon to get through some armor's damage threshold, or you need the damage-type of that weapon or something, OR you need the greater hit percentage more than you need the extra damage, etc.), but the outcome is different than if he were a different character with more MIG and less of some other stat. Variety is the spice of life. -

^ The key word there being "equally." Also, it's good to know that, in order to disagree with something, one is required to be prejudiced and biased. I never knew that. -
No, I just like to observe possibilities that are perfectly relevant to the discussion. International shipping is an extra shipping cost, and Obsidian charged for it. Shipping a 2nd shipment just for documentaries, instead of the single shipment they were planning is an additional shipping cost. Just because that doesn't make sense to you for some reason doesn't mean I'm going to go around being ashamed of myself and rethink my whole thought process or something. I don't know why you have such narrow boundaries in a discussion, and why someone presenting an idea you don't condone automatically equals "WTF/completely irrelevant" issues and gets you all worked up. It's baffling. You're right that they don't have to charge us for that 2nd shipment. And you're right that Flow wasn't initially describing the passing of that cost on to customers. I apologize for causing confusion with my response, but I was simply observing a possibility, and have not argued against either of those points this whole time. Maybe take it down a notch, Hiro. Way to be an adult about it, Sarex. There was a reason they've made the decision they have, and they're still delivering the documentary, AND giving us another freebie that is yet unknown. It could be a free trial for high-speed satellite internet for all we know. It's as simple as that. You can call it defending Obsidian, and I'll keep calling it "pointing out stuff that's true that you happen to not like because it doesn't allow your complaints to feel justified."

I will happily do so, as soon as the question actually gets answered. You've said plenty of stuff, and none of it has been evidence that there's officially too little fear/suspicion of animancers in the world. Please show me some charts or something of exactly how many people throughout Eora want to burn animancers at the stake, and how many think animancy might be cool.

I kind of agree. I do think that allowing for various factors (and not JUST Dex) to ultimately decide the final result that is your Accuracy rating is a very good idea, but I honestly don't think just switching to something else is a good idea. Dexterity is sort of fundamentally representative of coordination (amongst other things). So, no matter how strong you are, or wise you are (spells and the like, for example, being often based purely on mental stats), if you can't see something, then "aim" accurately at that thing (coordinate your senses of detection with your ability to direct force, whether mental or magic or physical, etc.), you're not going to have good aim. Some of the strongest people in the world can have horrible balance and hand-eye coordination, lack of depth-perception, etc. But, like I said, I would like for things to affect it. Maybe if you've got a giant two-handed sword, and like 7 Might, you can only use it at 70% Accuracy. So, even if your DEX is a million, it doesn't just automatically make you flawlessly accurate with whatever weapon you're wielding. A system with various contributing factors tends to provide a lot more interesting results in a variety of situations (and after a variety of different actions/efforts/choices) than one that's more stagnant. So, I definitely hope we see some stuff like that. I definitely hate the Diablo-style "You only have 44 Strength, and you need 45 Strength to even WIELD this weapon" hard pre-requisites. I mean, I guess they sort of work in Diablo, because it's not really claiming much simulation. But, in a regular RPG, it's a little silly. "You can't even use this sword enough to THROW it at an enemy and harm them to any degree whatsoever, but now that you gained a point of Strength, you can flawlessly wield it like a boss! 8D!" Too rigid. Wayyyy too rigid. -
Hiding helmet option
Lephys replied to namelessthree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I realize it's actually feasible here, so I'm not really commenting directly on this instance or anything, but it's just kinda funny how that's pretty much never not a valid response. "We won't be able to pilot 5, different-colored lion mechs, and form them together into Voltron whenever we're getting beaten too badly? *tsk tsk*... we'll just hafta wait for the mod!" It's funny literal word meanings, is all. Like everything that can possibly be imagined is supposed to be in the game, but was just cut due to budget/time constraints, and it's all just delayed content because unofficial modders have to put it in. Haha. Sorry. Silly thoughts and all. -
Character speed / boots of speed?

You have to switch to "walk" when moving away from explosions, especially. -
^ There is. It was in a recent update. Can't remember what the thing's called, though. But it'll list all manner of creature info, and even fill in data about the creatures (typical HP, natural armor ratings, etc.) as you fight them and learn such things. ^_^

AKA "I have no problem with people replying and voicing their opinions... as long as their opinions aren't in any way in favor of Obsidian's decision." It's totally fine to call bullpoop, but if you simply observe that it may not be bullpoop, suddenly you're a "white knight." "Hello, my dear princess... I can see you're out for a stroll in the rain!" *Knight rides up* "Actually, it isn't raining right now." "Ahhh, a WHITE knight, I see! Here to defend this fair maiden?" "... Ummm, sure, dude. Look, it's not raining, alright?" *rides off*

No circles below characters?
Lephys replied to Archaven's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Man... I was gonna make the joke that we already have "circles" to identify characters with, but Gromnir already beat me to the female armor reference. But, yeah, I don't think they've specifically given us an official list of each individual thing that will be toggleable, but they've said multiple times now how pretty much anything that could be toggled off without fundamentally cracking a hole in the gameplay, will be toggleable. They've said stuff like "All the options that collectively make up expert mode will be individual options, as well." -
The Official Romance Thread
Lephys replied to Blarghagh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Maybe krakens battle as part of their mating ritual. 8P Seriously though, the main problem with "typical" video game romances is that they're so isolated. They feel more like an afterthought or add-on than a part of the game. They're never just a natural part of playing your character. Hell, it's why we call them "romances," as a whole separate thing in the game, and we don't call other entire sets/types of character interactions "angers" or "manipulations" and make whole threads about them. I know there are reasons they aren't plugging it into this game, specifically, but I hope that there's at least some subtle residual potential for fondness and affection between characters in the writing of PoE, even if it's not pursuable unto some "relationship" status or marriage or something. I think it's best that these things don't really work like that anyway. If the story encompasses a good year or more of stuff, and characters are with each other through it all, then MAYBE when all's said and done, and you've both actually survived, it might make sense to actually settle down and choose marriage or something like that. Otherwise, it's simply developing fondness and such. It's almost no different from any other choices you have to make regarding other characters, or factions; who you're going to support/back, who you're going to do stuff for, who you don't like, etc., except it's just a different type of relationship. A more personal one for your character. You don't have to write in scenes of expression of undying love, etc., and dates and stuff. That's when it gets ridiculous. The world is still the world, and the narrative is still the narrative. "Romance" should just be one of the sets of paths you can take to the same destination, not some random isolated path that just leads through a garden of sunshine and bunnies in the midst of bloody invasions and world-endangerment. I say again, if it were ever in PoE (or a sequel or something with the same mechanic structure), it should function as a facet of reputation. And it should be a very long-term development. Not "Hey, remember when we got through that cave like 30 minutes ago? LET'S GO MAKE BABIES NOW, AND ALWAYS STAY BY EACH OTHER'S SIDES!" -
Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Lephys replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Yeah, right now you can only add things to unfinalized pledges. Thus, if your pledge is finalized, then, at the moment, the only way to get add-ons is to make another, what... $35 pledge? (It's got to at least be the tier that comes with a copy of the game). They've mentioned frequently (pretty much since right after the portal went up) that they're working on getting add-on support in place for already completed/finalized orders, so that we'll have the option to "edit" our finalized pledges. Patience is a virtue, -
*shrug*... I just deduced it was feasible, is all. I don't have to only talk about things other people have already posited. I can think up my own stuff, you know. Can't help it that an idea you or someone else didn't already present somehow muddies the waters of comprehension for you. That's not my intention. I'm just trying to share my part in the discussion. Nothing more, nothing less. I'll just pretend that instead of acting like it's somehow obvious that I'm full of nonsense simply because you didn't immediately understand my point, that you actually asked "what made you think of that?" Well, I'm glad you pretend-asked! See, in the initial Kickstarter, they listed "include an extra such-and-such ($20 or $25, I think?) for international shipping." What is that? An extra cost. What did they do with it? Mitigate it by diverting extra cost to the backers whose reward-fulfillment incurred that extra cost. So, it's not even really true that "no one" said anything about extra cost to the backers, really, since Obsidian already presented the idea of extra cost for reward fulfillment shifting (at least partially) to an extra cost to the backers. So, it's not exactly preposterous or arbitrary to suppose that they might, hypothetically, charge more if they had to make an extra shipment to a couple thousand people. And there ya have it. I'm glad you've expressed such an interest in productive discussion, Hiro, and that you're so incredibly tolerant of perspectives and ideas that differ from your own immediate thoughts. ^_^

Shipping Physical Goods and Customs
Lephys replied to Gyges's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Okay okay, what if they make stamps of the team's own signatures, but the devs all use those stamps in-person in front of every single backer at his own home? Is it still legit, even though they aren't using a pen? And on that note, would it be okay if the signatures were just printed on the boxes so long as the development team was operating the printing machinery at the time? -
There would if you wanted to please everyone. That's kind of my entire point. Some people are gonna go "whoa, a delay on the documentary? NOT COOL, man!", just like current people are going "Whoa, there won't be a disc? NOT COOL, man!" Everyone prioritizes the factors differently, and it's easy to say "Pssh, what I want is more important than what others may want." And there's not really an option for Obsidian that pleases everyone, shy of an "all of the above" option, which would require multiple versions of the documentary.

What if they build an android to the exact specifications of a developer from the team, then copy that dev's brain over into the android's electronic brain, then have the android sign all the copies in a fraction of the time with his super awesome android powers? Would that still count? I mean, technically, every single copy would be manually signed by that developer's consciousness. Meh? -
Then you have two factions: A) The "You never said there'd be an extra cost for the physical copy of the documentary! Honor your promise, Obsidian, by doing what you need to such that there's no extra cost!" (basically, "ship it early without the last stretch included, because I'm not paying more money for it!" B) The "Hey, you said we'd get a physical DVD! I don't care if it costs more money, just ship it later anyway!" What's the solution, then? Make two versions of the documentary? A short one and a long one, so that people who don't mind can get their short one without paying extra (and get it earlier), and people who DO mind can get their longer one, later, and just pay a bit more for shipping? What about the leftover folks, who want the long one but don't want it shipped any later and don't want to pay any extra? See, it's easy to just look at the choice in relation to a single perspective. Not so easy to make the choice when you consider that there's no way to make everyone happy. Also, thanks for those super-pleasant images, GhoulishVisage. I'm gonna go to my panic room now, and take a shower in bleach.

Feats and Traits ideas
Lephys replied to konst3d's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Yeah, all accuracy is already based on Dexterity in PoE. As for the weapon-style ones, I think Josh recently commented on how they'd like to have feats(Talents in PoE) for specific fighting styles like that, but they don't know if they will or not (comes down to time and resources after they finish what's already on the agenda/schedule). We will be able to dual-wield, and such, though. Heck, we might even be able to dual-wield shields... -
this sounds strange, dont get me wrong but I hope it will not end up like in skyrim eg. flame/froms/lightning hands, flame/frost/lighting ball, flame/frost/lightning storm. How are covered spells like finger of death, disintegrate, magic missile, weil of banshee, symbol of death.. etc which are not associated with exact element? From the Thoughts On Damage Types thread a little while back, this is the list Josh gave (apparently on SomethingAwful... don't have a link since there wasn't one in that thread) of all the damage types: Slash, pierce, crush, burn, freeze, corrode, and shock. I dunno if that's changed or not, but there's also a "raw" type, which I think he's mentioned in this thread, as well. I think "elemental" was in quotes because some of the things generally labeled "elemental" in RPGs aren't exactly elements, per se (like "Spirit"). But, even with just those damage types, stuff like death magic and disintegrate could simply deal raw damage. Or, for Disintegrate, specifically, for example, it could be Shock coupled with Corrode. *shrug* It's a good question. Maybe we'll get an update that covers the finalized damage system? Who knows.

... which matters to uneducated folk who don't know that because? False. Animancy can and has done the things you mentioned. Guns can and have brutally mowed down entire villages of innocent people. Animancy can and has also greatly aided people and/or been used for not forcibly attaching people's souls to corporeal vessels. Guns can and have also protected entire villages from people who would mow them down, and hunted animals and such so that certain peoples wouldn't starve, etc. It's a perfectly un-ridiculous analogy. So, you can keep responding about how ridiculous I am, and sighing, or you could actually answer me questions, instead of talking about how Josh already did, or how much of a given it is, and how it baffles you that I fail to comprehend the so-obvious truth. Purpose... that serves none. No, but there's a real world analogue for being ignorant and fearful of something despite not being thoroughly educated in its actual/exact nature. We've already been over how people in reality have imagined being cursed thusly, and fearful of such things. The simple fact that it actually happened matters little to someone who believes it has. It especially doesn't make anyone know whether or not it's actually happened any harder. Truth doesn't inherently live in people's brains. It has to travel there. Last time I checked, people weren't a hivemind. If some silly noble doesn't invest his belief in "peasants' tales" of such things, or believes his own soul to be "noble," and therefore better than other people's, or is just plain psychologically unstable, or (insert various reasons here), he might readily seek out immortality anyway. OR, maybe the person says "Oh no, that animancy is wretched, primitive stuff. This is not that." What's he gonna do? "Ah-HAH! Got you! I've read every single peer-reviewed journal in the field of animancy, so I know for a fact that what you're doing IS in fact what Steve the Lich did back when he tried to raise that undead army in '73. u_u"? I don't understand what you're expecting. The devs have specifically stated that many, many people have a "BURN IT WITH FIRE" mentality when it comes to animancy. You suggest the people of the world don't have enough suspicion and/or fear/contempt for animancy, based on what? The only thing you've presented is that it seems odd that some people would ever willingly seek out animancical (what would be the adjective form?) processes? No, it's not that. You've already said that's not it. So what? It's fine that yes, animancers would operate in some numbers in the world, and it's fine that probably the majority of the world's population is highly suspect of anything they even think to be animancy, but there's still some mystery issue? I have yet to even pinpoint what it is you feel is problematic about this lore.
