  1. I do have to agree that Glau's performance in Serenity was not her best. Though I suspect I may disagree with Grommie about her ability, I do think that the final battle scene was ... scripted too much. It lacked that realism of FF. I do not, however, feel that was her fault per se. In fact that final scene, was to me, quite contrary to FF's overall tenure. Though I am not certain, I feel that scene was scripted to make the movie palatable to the 'action audience.' I do like Glau's character acting - in fact Serenity up until half-way balanced River's usual reservation and withdrawal well. I'll never know the pressures brought to bear in the editing stage - so there you are.
  2. WOW - I never thought of that! That would be most interesting indeed ...
  3. Thanks Hades - I have a few friends who will be most excited about this rumour.
  4. Sorry Hades - I was not so much talking about fan-based movies for FF, as much as alluding to the fact that fan0based movies are already demonstrating that the net can work to distribute entertainment content that challenges the conventional distribution structure - does that make sense? As for the BBC rumour - that's very cool. Do you have a link for that by chance?
  5. Oh I definitely hear you. In fact that is why I feel the movie/series balance could address this. That Whedon has comfort with nixing characters could lead to a more thorough uni telling ... or better yet different stories in the same uni. The problem, of course, is the ST phenom that ends up motivated by its own propulsion w/o creativity - does that make sense? I think that's another tool in the box indeed. From what I understand over the pond in the UK, there are close ended story-lines that are like this rather than ongoing TV series. I think that would work really well, as a way to add pieces to the large potential of the FF uni. And there Hades you have hit on my excitement about the FF fan-base. Though the documentary may not appeal to non-Geckling Brown Coats , the fact of the matter is it demonstrates - to me at least - that the whole entertainment paradigm is changing. Though there are a lot of fan made movies now, it is clear that commercial, wide-spread endeavours can utilise the net and be marketable. In fact, I'd love to see Whedon skip the whole network nightmare and direct to the user. I feel the sale of the DVDs warrants this consideration. The problem is how much intellectual copyright has he released to Fox and Universal? Of course, Fox or Universal could be leaders and do this with an invitation to Whedon if he no longer has intellectual ownership (which I suspect is the case ).
  6. And with that delightful sharing we'll dance this one into the AotS ...
  7. Yeah - but that would lose the uber-cool factor Seriously though, his comfort with weaponry and such makes me suspect the operative aspect, but I'd not put it past the realm of possibility that he could be a Senator. That sounds both plausible and really very exciting. The depth implied would again be an affirmation of the potential of the series. I continue to wrestle - especially with the insights in this thread - that FF works better as a series than a film franchise. Not that I do not appreciate the film aspect, but the series inherently possesses much more depth for an ensemble piece (as Gromnir observed about some of the shortcomings of the film). That having been said, a balance between the two would be wonderful! Babylon 5 demonstrated some paradigm shift in that regard - 5 made for tv movies if I recall? The possibility is definitely there.
  8. I definitely see that Book was likely an Operative. The episode with Early(Objects in Space - Richard Brooks) was not only one of the most creative character development episodes - imo - it added in one line so much potential about Book that I think you've got lots with which to work. Parliament/Mal & plot lines. I'd love to see this SLOWLY evolve. Don't forget River has WAY moreinfo in her head than just Miranda. She's still got a lot of potential for story-lines, but also there needs to be care not to jump the shark - for which any continued series holds real danger. I'd like it to continue as an ensemble piece with balance - something Buffy quickly lost and Angel walked somewhat well. I definitely do not want the River show ... I want to know more about the core and the reality of where and how humanity is where it is at ... high wishes, but hey, ya gotta ta aim high
  9. I'd love to see the series continue too, I just do not know if it will be possible. At least not with the original crew - well not all of them at least. Someone mentioned the Wonder Woman reality for Whedon, and I suspect this is a good observation/challenge. If he can pull it off and have a hit on his hand, this would definitely give him some leverage. Whether or not he wants to, however, I guess continues to be a valid question if in fact that stars a line correctly.
  10. And we arrive at a time of farewell that will leave of with many memories ...
  11. Likely any of the other characters would have elicited - unfortunately - the same inquiry. And this is why I want in to Whedon's head ... or at least more more more from him The first graphic novel was interesting and I hope the second one adds to the episodes not completed to the first season. The future storyline, however, with Walsh's and Book's death do indeed pose many questions about where he is/was intending to go ...
  12. Geckling is a term that goes back way back in the day ... I originally used it on the old IPLY boards pre-BIS fora to indicate that 'geeks' were cool ... not sure if it worked As a result of that conversation which I suspect is over 6 years old (? - perhaps some of the old school crowd might remember that conversation on the old tree style BB @ IPLY). Since then, I have used it unsparingly to liberate all Gecklings from the taint of geekiness Or so I stand staunchly in the eye-rolling of my partner!
  13. Except that in the ST: NG parallel and Whedon's track record that is not the norm ... which is why it is even more tantalising and frustrating ... like that darn loose tooth I remember confounded by a shield and blade
  14. It sucks, but is adds a realism that I feel is part of the success of the series Whedon has done. I remember when Tasha was killed off in ST: NG and I was really hurt ... but then I realised that the power that had in the story-telling added an authenticity that is rare in the TV medium. That Joss did 2 characters @ one time was ... hard ... but it REALLY makes me want to know why and where that might lead with the characters. It was a brave move, especially as Book is one of my favourite characters. Ah well ... creativity and insanity may go hand-hand
  15. hehe I have to surface once in awhile LoneWolf - otherwise Grommie might not be able to claim I'm seen too much As for the killing off of characters - welcome to the world of Whedon ... he likes to do that!
  16. There was a mass purchase globally of Serenity and Firefly on June 23 that was intended to again influence the studios. The sales jumped for 3 days dramatically. I believe FF went to # 1 and Serenity to #2 at their highest within the global time frame @ Amazon. It was a site to see!
  17. Okay I think it's time for a timeout in the sandbox ... let's take a deep breath ... avoid global tension for a moment ... and simply BE ...
  18. No it was in an video interview - I believe - let me check ... Okay it is from Scifibrain blog blurb: http://scifibrain.ign.com/index.php?option...3129&Itemid=121 They're primarily talking about the second graphic novel, but they have indicated at the end there continues to obviously be a possibility and they link it to the sales of the DVD. Heck they already have Serveity in CD-DVD!
  19. Hmmm I may have to revist the Serenity commentary, but I was certain there were - albeit polite - references to the final expectations, as opposed to the freedom in the direction itself.
  20. Actually the province is pretty well wired for high speed in towns that exceed 5k. It's one of the advantage of Crown Corporations imo Hence why the iTunes option might be worth looking into. I might also look into renting from NetFlix if I cannot in fact rent it locally.
  21. Not within 160 km! We have something called a Movie Gallery' I may check ... well should check.
  22. I am hoping to check it out locally - if they carry it. What formats does iTunes provide it in? I'm more in want of renting at this point - but my options are limited sometimes (ie fancy urban store that rents TV Series by the DVD!)
  23. I still have to try out BG - I hear it is indeed quite well done. Darn remote locations in which to live!
  24. From what I understand in regard to the movie is something quite similar to what happened with the series. Universal put a lot of control stops in and the result was a movie that tried to be too many things, not b/c the content was not present, but b/c those who were controlling the purse did not have the same visions (a la Fox). Of course I am completely not objective in this regard ... well if such a claim can ever be true. It is interesting to hear Joss talk in the extras on the Serenity DVD and then listen to what happened when he was involved with Aliens 3. It seems to me that vision and creativity are indeed a difficult thing to merge in a the medium of tv/movies. I feel that Firefly portends what that creativity might be - I also feel that the Firefly phenomenon (though akin to the Star Trek fan base) challenges a paradigm now with DVDs and secondary source sales challenging main stream channels (movie releases). It' an interesting world out there ...
  25. It's a fan made documentary that is rather extensive in its coverage and lots of geeky things like scripts and stuff - cool, eh? @ meta - there are already indications Universal is considering a second movie due to DVD sales of Serenity - this sort of thing will only add to that possibility ...
