Casting your vote is something to be taken very seriously because the outcome of that vote will affect everyone in society. To vote, you must make an informed and intelligent decision. My question is: can a person under the influence of religion truly be considered to be "informed and intelligent"? We dont let people under 18 vote, is that tyranny? No, it is because children are generally(there are many brilliant exceptions) incapable of making informed and intelligent decisions. Here comes the example of religious voting and the consequences of it: two countries have been fighting over a piece of land for 50years. There has been a suggestion to split that piece between these countries so everyone can finally have peace. Problem is, religion X states that that land is sacred and belong to country Y because "the prophet/god/pamphlet/whatever of X says so". Thus, the people belonging to religon X will vote against the suggestion, allowing the fighting to continue indefinently along with the death and suffering. So, the believers of religion X acted in accordance with their faith but contrary to reason, logic and just basic common sense. Their religion rendered them incapable of making an informed and intelligent decision.

This would describe me quite well. I believe it is essential for an enlightened society to reject ideas and morals that are based on religious dogma. Religion should be nothing more than a personal 'hobby' of sorts and never be allowed to form powerstructures in society(churches or sects) by which they can spread their influence or manipulate people and politics. Ive also thought about if the separation between religion and state should not mean that any party associated with religion(christian democrats f.ex. ) should be banned and any voter who would base his decision on religious ideas instead of reason shouldnt be allowed to vote. You might say that is unfair and undemocratic, but Id say that religion is inherently antidemocratic and should be kept outside of all political matters.

Sadly, they are the only studio with the talent and the will to make really great CRPGs now that Troika went tumbling down

But the AMD64 Venice core is very nice indeed.. I have an Antex Sonata special silent case with only a single exhaust fan and the intake holes clogged by sound dampening material but I can still overclock this CPU 10% with almost no heat increase. ..but then again, overclocking the CPU will get you nowhere with games, its all about the GFX really.

Interesting article about PC v. Console
Kaftan Barlast replied to kumquatq3's topic in Computer and Console
That, right there, is a great big load of crap. PC hardware is updated much more often than console hardware, but that doesn't translate to "endless possibilities" by any stretch of the imagination. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It is a big load of crap if you cant see beyond.. ...this point of view right here. The PC doesnt allow for more possibilities simply because it can be updated with more advanced hardware(even if thats also true) but because with a PC, you can write and share material without having to beg MS or Sony to let you buy licenses and a Software Developer kit. AND youre also free to do what you want with the things you make for the PC. Everything you write for the Xbox or PS will be property of MS or Sony. Not to mention a trillion other points. Take the game were producing at Uni right now, a flash-based iometric action-adventure, if we would go to MS and ask to buy an SDK for our school so we could do Xbox games, they would have laughed and kicked us out. All we need now is our own computers with cheap, educational versions of FlashMX -
Interesting article about PC v. Console

What it comes down to, is that developing for PC offers endless possibilities while Consoles offer nothing but limitations. Im going to tell Brian Lawson you said that *fisticuffs* -

On 'dumbing down' : Consoles are restrictive when compared to a PC, not only do you have a fixed amount of memory, processor power and hardrive space to work with and so on, but youre also limited to hand controlers as your main source(there are always exceptions, but that is so obvious that I shouldnt have to write it) of input and to a television set as your main visual output. This sets hard limits on what kind of games you can create and the type of features that can be implemented in these games. There is also major differances in the way PC and console games are played. And as technology advances, the consoles still remain at the same stage and this is where the technical(as opposed to gameplay-wise) "dumbing down" comes into play. You have to keep within a fixed box of limitations here too and if youre developing for the PC and console simultaneously, that will have a negative impact on the PC version aswell as it isnt feasible to make two completely different sets of graphics and code. This problem gets worse and worse the older the console. When developing for the PC you have a "moving roof" where you make the game for the highest specs and then have removeable features(normal maps, dynamic lights etc.) to make it playable on slower machines. But if youre say, making it for the PS3 at the same time, Sony will never accept that the PS3 version looks much worse than the PC version and demand that the graphical quality be approximately the same for both. Thus, the game is "dumbed down". ..and yes, SuperMario 3 for the NES sold 17million copies as opposed to The Sims 16million copies for the PC and is therefore the best selling game of all time(bundled games do not count for obvious reasons). and my figures Ive seen still say that WoW is the most played game at the moment. -

That "optimization" is what we normally refer to as dumbing down a game to fit within the very narrow specs of a console. It is not an improvement IMO If all you do with your PC is play games, then sure, that is a very good argument. Most played game in the world right now: World of Warcraft (PC) The best selling game of all time: The Sims (PC) " -
Interesting article about PC v. Console

But the fact remains that with the 4-500 you pay for a console, you still get nothing more than a toy that, in 6months or so, wont be able to play the high-end games either. Sure, itll play them! But you can play Q4 on an AMD 1500+ with a radeon 9700 too. This whole thing that consoles will outrun the PC as the #1 gaming platform is something that comes from console manufacturers. What do you think theyd like you to believe? -

Microsoft sued over alleged Xbox 360 glitch
Kaftan Barlast replied to kumquatq3's topic in Computer and Console
Petty lawsuits are bad but if its M$ that are being sued... go right ahead! :D I would absolutely love it if the 360 became a flop because the less games are "exclusiveized" to that evil piece of technology, the more for us honest PC users -

I dont think any system is capable of giving BF2 reasonable loading times. You just have to take the pan and find something useful to do all those endless moments youll spend staring at the load screen " -
Well, in Japan its ok to be a perv and these are the consequences of that policy. You may argue that we in the west also have a lot of dodgy stuff in that area but the Japanese do it on such a massively larger scale. And I cant help but imagine how awkward it would be like to work with making these games. Yeeeah, Jimbo. I think you need to get the animation when you pull your *** out of her *** and *** in her *** a bit tighter. And could you ask Sven if hes worked out how to program the 'hot karl' attack feature yet? Oh, and I think well need to rework the collision detection on the butt slamming again.

SLI is not a scam, ut you dont get 200% performance just because you have dual cards. What you DO get is a 30-40% increase in running really heavy graphics with maxed resolution and AA where just one card will have too much to process.

I though the controls were pretty much in the higher range of what you can expect from an FPS and how is the collision awkward? The programmers have been dealing some with c-d here but not us lowly design&graphics monkeys. ..and will you be wearing your St. Christoffer beard when you play? " -

Too bad both the original and the expansion are STILL selling at full retail price. (EA knows how to milk it) -

It ran just fine on my old AMD 2600 with an old Radeon 9700(not the pro version) so it will run just fine on your comp.

Apart from being too slow and having an abundance of inane or immature posters, the moderation policies of BioWare makes it impossible to actually have real discussions. They close everything that is even remotely controvertial, so unless you talk about something where everyone already agrees with you, youre not going to talk at all. I dont know if anyone posted this already but heres a link to how "Bioware makes their community work" http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20051201/demaria_01.shtml

Bloodlines is actually a really really good CRPG, one of the best ever made. It does, however suffer from memory leaks and bugs aswell as the classical "rushed ending" that is also quite anticlimactic.
