A little variety can be a good thing. This setting is more like the Age of Exploration than the Middle Ages. For example, on Earth the wheellock was a 16th century invention, which is post-medieval. Pillars in general is post-Medieval, as you point out. Another hint is the way Caed-Nua is called an old-style fortress; fortresses were redesigned to resist cannons. However, as a History teacher who teaches this exact subject to unimpressionable young minds; we have a problem integrating Histories of multiple locations or intuitively seeing history as a gradual change. Unless educated in it, we tend to see history in a linear progression of: Medieval = everything bad (food sucked and plague was everywhere, including in your shoes). Then the Renaissance = Books and **** made people think again and make pretty art. After that the Age of Exploration = Columbus and a bunch of dudes colonized all of America at once and killed the Native Americans with their super-technology. When in reality Shakespeare wrote about colonization in the Tempest; Renaissance militia used a mix of guns and pikes; and that platemail coexisted with guns for a long time. Perhaps most interesting is how violent, superstitious, greedy, and downright medieval most of the explorers were. My favorite primary source of all time is an account of Sir Francis Drake's Journeys where the author talks about robbing churches, eating penguins, and stealing the fire****ter. Pillars is the struggle of a man passionate about middle ages & rennaisance history and fantasy rpgs (Josh Sawyer), trying to keep a balance between them

Sequencing solves the scaling problem too. You just make a sequel expansion that is higher level than the end campaign. That said, we know now that Deadfire will have a "scaling" option, which'll make things easier for side expansions but only IF you choose to play as such. I'm a fan of the fixed design myself so this won't do. Again, sequel expansion solves all probems An extra thought: an expansion, although a sequel, can have stuff added to the base game too. An extra dungeon, items, npcs etc. You get the idea.

Well, if Obs go for Deadfire being to Pillars what BG2 was to BG, then we might get a sequential expansion this time

I really hope the (if there's gonna be one of course) expansion is sequential. I'd much rather continue the story than replay just to see the side stuff.

What I like about what I've seen in DF is that the team knows what was not so good in Pillars (because nothing was really bad to begin with ) and are improving upon it. It was obvious, tbh, from the White March expansion so I pretty much expected most of the new aspects of the game. What I didn't expect, though, is the "open" world exploration system which is a great thing imo. I liked the Pillars exploration style but I think this is much better. What excites me most is that I'm gonna play a game that checks every box in my crpg list

I don't know, plenty of JRPG's are quite good. The suikoden series for example had a great first two games. It doesn't have to be on a PC, require min maxing, real time with pause combat, and be in an isometric view to be an RPG. Oh don't doubt there are good j"r"pgs! I've played some and quite enjoyed them! I just don't think they are role playing games, since there never is any role playing invovled, that's all.

Yeah, thats' my take. Say you reach 0 once, you get the broken rib debuff (action speed -35%). Then you fall at 0 again and you stack up the broken arm debuff (can't use 2-handed weapons, accuracy -50%) and so on. At some point the characters cannot progress any further because they are inefficient in combat having stacked all those debuffs up. So you know next time all will fall and it's game over. You need to rest, spent your supplies and remove some debuffs so you won't be wiped next fight. If you don't have enough supplies you need to withdraw. That is speculation of course. This is how DA:O worked more or less. Of course there's big chance I am wrong and thay have a very different mechanic. But from what I saw (characters refilling life after combat), I say they'll go DA:O.

The Watcher spent 5 years pissing off Eothas. Eothas couldn't take it anymore so he walked out smashing everything. Of course, as the nice douchebag he or she is, the Watcher runs after him to piss him off some more. Watcher finds Eothas minding his own business, sometime somewhere in Deadfire: "Eothas wait. I need to ask you: why? What did I do that pissed you off so much?". The question will be answered in Deadfire's expansion "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire - A Question Worth An Expansion".

New health system is Dragon Age Origins style from what I can make. Good news for me because is the only health system I really like (since health/stamina is out). Pretty sure players got no injuries because noone fell in combat. In Dragon Age the idea was to survive the encounter or game over and if anyone fell during it, they got an injury. My guess is this is the case in Deadfire. If players pile up many injuries they cannot progress further because they'll keep dying easily (from severe penalties) so you either have the supplies to rest and mend them or forfeit the dungeon and come back later.

Split Health/Stamina

What I saw from the demo gameplay video, the new health system is going to be more Dragon Age Origins style, which is fine by me. Although I liked the split system both mechanically and thematically, this is the best other system I've seen in pc rpgs. Survive the encounter or game over. If anyone fell during it, they get an injury; stuck too many injuries and you can't progress further (because your characters keep falling in combat/encounters) so you better have supplies to rest and treat them. You don't? Guess you need to abandon the area for the moment. -
That would be cool. Maybe an option to treat a pet companion differently than partying companions. Where you can have the bird perch or at least "stay clipped" to Maia's side more or less. But also just shove the bird into the normal party formation as they are doing now if you are so inclined. But this is a mostly cosmetic thing, it's kind of fun to think this bird is as much of a team member as anyone else and can operate independently of Maia. I doubt there would be any rp writing that would specify the bird as being a war pet or an animal friend, so the player could probably just choose what setup they most prefer. I mean why it is a bird if it won't operate any different than a walking animal companion? Taking up space, not flying more than 1 meter above ground... maybe it'll be an effective scout and might have special uses in scripted interactions tho. And if you're out of supplies, you can always cook it!

There was a photo of Obsidian guys in Paradox booth. Because they were there it doesen't mean the game is published by Paradox. They could just went to say "hi". They're not strangers; they already have worked together! About having a smaller game published by Obs than a bigger published by Paradox, the only thing I can say is that Tyranny published by Paradox was 1/4 in length of Pillars worked by Obsidian (and only much later stike a dealwith Paradox for publishing - they were not part of campaign/development).
