Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Doppelschwert replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I know I'm not supposed to be entitled, but I'll be disappointed if I can't play today, and monday is only going to last for another 4-5 hours in europe. I mean, c'mon, a major part of the backers are from europe, why has everything to be US centric? I'd like to have my cake and eat it too. -
Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Doppelschwert replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Adam said on twitter that the beta is coming as soon as it is ready. <_< First you make me get home from work because I can't concentrate anyway, now you make me wait at home. You so cruel T_T https://twitter.com/adam_brennecke/status/501414711829991425 -
That's not what I was implying at all. It's a pretty common thing for someone to try to play DotA, get destroyed in their first few games and then just give up and there's a lot of people that have written posts writing off the community as a whole from a very bitter and shallow viewpoint indicating that they have had a terrible experience trying to get into it. On top of that they are using that negative experience as "evidence" that the moba crowd as a whole would not be interested in Pillars of Eternity. Then I apologize for misunderstanding you. However, I do think the community is partly responsible for this behaviour, so IMO the impression is somehow justified. I often feel like its more about winning for the moba crowd then having fun while playing. If I play dota2, I try to win of course, but I'm still satisfied if it is a close loss. Most people I know aren't, and most people evaluate you on the metric of winning, which is a shame IMO. That's probably the toughest part when you want to get into the game. Well if you did say that you would have been laughed at and ridiculed. There is no difference in putting time in to a MOBA and putting time in to PoE or any other game for that matter, both is wasted time (with the exception of streamers and professional players who make money of the game). You completely missed the point and are simply determined to be antagonistic and unpleasant. Indeed.

I think it's pretty condescending to imply that everyone who dislikes something has to be bad at it. I could also claim that people defending MOBAs just have to justify the time they wasted on them, but neither do I think so nor is it constructive to the discussion. It is a free online game after all, of course the majority of the community is going to consists of ****. I mean, it's the internet. The level of blaming and insulting gets absurd at times. People often get flamed although they admit their own mistakes and try to be cooperative. Hell, you can even be flamed at just because you disagreed on some stupid plan and did your own thing that ultimately won the game, or from having a different build than the ones everyone else is using. They don't even wait to see if your build works or not. From my experience, this is also independent from your ranking. If you have limited gaming time, it's completely understandable that you don't feel like keeping up with some aggressive teenagers just because the game may get better at some later time with more experience. MOBAs require a lot of dedicated time and experience to be able to play them fairly good. IMO, it's totally understandable to dislike them if you lack the time to get the experience. The closest single player experience to MOBAs I know of is probably Aarklash Legacy, and I'd say it's still quite different from the IE games.

They are in the footage shown at gamescom, and that was the beta, so they should be in, yes. Note however that it is only a total of +2 to stats so pretty neglectible anyway. You also get a +1 bonus from your background. You're probably better off looking out for the races perks instead of the attributes and taking your background accordingly.

I'll bump this thread in the hope some dev will give an estimate for the time. I'd really like to spend my evening playing the beta after coming home from work, however, I'd like to know if it is any use leaving work earlier than normally. Because you know, with CET it is monday way earlier, so if the beta is released during the evening in PST, I don't even need to bother on monday.

I'm going to make a nerdy human monk. He will wield swords, has average might and dexterity, but low constitution and high intelligence. And I will focus on the lore skill. He would've been better off being a wizard, but he likes swords so that's what he does. And then I'll test if this will still be viable for the game. If it is, I'm going to dedicate the rest of my life to become that guy. I am confident that Obsidian can give me this purpose for my life

You get some pre-assigned character at begin of the beta, but you can hire more adventurers at the inn and replace the old ones. At least, if you have enough money for that. Exactly. The video shown at gamescom showed that hiring an adventurer costs 1000 gold / level and i think the starting gold was below 2000 as well as the quest reward being less than 1000, although someone more dedicated could check that. On the other hand, we don't know if you can simply 'sell' the companions you have for their hiring price, so there is no way to tell how flexible we will be in creating parties. The party you get consists of a dwarfen fighter, orlan rogue, elven priestess and a human wizard at lvl 5, if I am not mistaken, so basically the core four. You have free choice in your main character, but I'd be interested in knowing whether you can construct a party of, for example a monk, cipher, druid, ranger and chanter. In particular, the inn showed only the possibility to hire characters up to lvl 4. I mean, if we are to test the mechanics, we should probably be able to play as any subset of the 11 classes.

That's true for like, any number of people that is big enough. "There are more than 80 million people in germany, so I bet a percantage of them will like and play the game." Nevertheless that is not a reason to have a special marketing campaign in germany. Just because there is some lore doesn't make it good or relevant. I also don't think the lore in Dota2 is consistent in any way. I don't claim to be an expert but from the few heroes I read the lore, the stories are completely independent. So yeah, every hero has some kind of a one page background that probably doesn't interact with any other heros background. Fantastic Lore. Even better is the hero 'Lina' which is a ripoff of the actual character lina in the manga slayers. They share appearance, spells and name. That's some high quality lore there.

I fear there won't be enough cash to make a full custom party to test stuff. Like testing how feasible it is to run around with 6 paladins having all auras simultaneously. Or playing around with 6 rangers and their animal companions. Or having some party that is more original than having a class 6 times.

I'm afraid I don't think it will be possible to name them. In the video, he just equipped the piglet and there was no input device for a new when he got it, so it seems unlikely if there was the possibility of an input at same later point. However, it would be a nice addition. I think that you will be able to name the companion of the ranger, so maybe play as a ranger and make a lion called namu?

Half of the guys I'm playing DOTA2 with are people that would never play PoE. They just want to thrill of being better than another human being, e.g. they are mostly in it for the competition and have a low frustration tolerance. Which, given the toxic atmosphere in these games, is a common thing. Personally, I find the MOBA genre to be totally overhyped. The only reason I'm sticking with it is that it is the least common denominator with the guys I went to school with so that we can spend some time together playing games while living apart. Any long term game with progression won't work because someone will then just go ahead and play alone until the others can't keep up. MOBAs also lack the individualism you can have with a party based single player game and are overcrowded with unsocial people because it's free. In a way, some are just as bad as the people of the bioboards.

I'd guess filling the bestiary is also a good motivation to slaughter enemies... at least for the completionist in me. Besides, I think you will be able to deal with trash mobs if you only use your per encounter abilities. Adam also only had 5 characters instead of 6 and didn't specialize for the enemy in equipment and stuff. I'd guess there is a broad range of how you can perform depending on both tactical and strategic decisions. I wouldn't take the showing at gamescom as very representative in terms of ressource consumation. So I'm not saying the lack of exp per kill is not an issue, but rather that I can imagine it going both ways, so lets wait and see till monday.

I agree, cut the guy some slack already. There's also the jetlag issue when they arrived in germany just a couple days ago. He may also very well use other classes when he plays the game himself. I'm not sure if I'm going to the take the 4 core classes with me when I play the game. -
Well, they have their own beta testers regarding bugs. Still, you're right about it being beneficial, but I think what they are doing is viable as well. Given that you can replay the little content in all kind of party variations, there should be more than enough time to have fun with the beta. It's probably enough for balancing, given that the max level is supposed to be 12 and you can go all the way to 8.

I think you missed the point of the beta, or rather the term beta is missleading in this case. It's not meant to playtest the game, only to playtest the mechanics and give the devs some feedback. They are also incorporating this feedback into which talents should be designed for class customization. The full game will be similiar in scope to baldurs gate 2, so there should be no worry about that. The demo is really only meant to showcase how the game plays - it only concerns a small optional part not relevant to the main quest. I doubt they will expand it at a later point.

I'd say the magic missiles actually come from behind the caster and arc downwards at the beginning. EDIT: Ninja'd by the gifs. Still, I was right.
