See, that's the part that pisses me off in this thread. Someone is sincerely suggesting something constructive, like the marriage option, and then Bruce pretends to get their point but ultimately just falls back to 'promancers gonna promance like they always did, herp a derp'. Just because it is not immersive for you doesn't mean it's not for other people. Just because some bad romance is immersive for you, it doesn't mean it is for other people. Speak for yourselve all day long if you want, but please stop with this hypocrisy of claiming what is acceptable for a romance for a group of people while at the same time criticizing people for stating their personal levels of acceptance for a romance, just because they don't want one. For what it's worth, romance involves building a connection for the player, yes, but that's about it. There is no magical checklist to achieve that, it either works or it doesn't. If you need to constantly look at a sprite and have same badly written dialogue with them to achieve that, good for you. But you shouldn't pretend that it's the only way. Sometimes it's better to show less and let imagination do its part. You pretend you want deep relationships, but every single suggestion about them that excludes the feely-touchy part, like long distance-marriage or a couple of old people is denied by you. That's superficial at best. In the end, all I get from your posts is that you want some hot chicks running around with you, where you have the option to get them into bed. And that is ok per se, but don't pretend to care for deep relationships if it is looks before everything else to you.

I wrote a really long reply, but midway through I realized that I don't feel like arguing with bruce over this stuff for now. In a nutshell, I really like the concept of being married in a game in the first place. I feel like being in a relationship is way more satisfying, meaningful, difficult as well as deeper compared to falling in love, so it's somehow stupid to just implement the latter in games. You should totally make that mod with the letter namutree, I'd like to play that sometime.

Care to give some empiric evidence for this claim? I don't think anyone wants party interaction that are on the same level as bioware romance. I'm pretty sure the same standards apply for both, it's just easier to achieve a good party interaction because it is not so dependent on the behavior of the player.

Really? That's your argument? I'm pretty sure the main demographic for video games is central europe, north-america and australia. I don't know of any culture there where prearranged marriages or honour killings are part of. Also, what's up with the assumption that every party member should be single in the first place? If you want your realism in a medieval world and not just some 20th century with swords and magic, given the life expectancy, most people are probably married by the time they join your party, especially if they are usually not a full time adventurer. I argue that in most settings it's probably more logical and realistic if your party members are married, so romance makes no sense. Feel free to bring some counterarguments.

Attack speed?
Doppelschwert replied to kronyth's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Why would you attack faster if you are intelligent? Your damage is already linked to might, so in order to have the dps not scale quadratically attack speed should be fixed IMO. This way it's more transparent. -
Josh already confirmed that somewhere, although I don't have a link for you. It's getting harder faster than you level up, which is good in my book, because that means it won't play like a game in game. Regarding D:OS, a lot of stuff is difficulty gated as well, especially once you hit the second map, so it's really not that different from BG2 in this regard. I didn't figure out some of the puzzles so I often skipped some areas where I was supposed to go in order to cheese my way through higher level territories. The game would be railroading you if it actually had any decent quest design rather then 'sometimes you only can progress if your perception is high enough while at other times you have to go somewhere completely unrelated first, but figure yourself out which one it is this time'. I also felt like the exp system was way off in Original Sin. All the senseless fighting at the end left me with such a bitter taste in my mouth that I immediately uninstalled the game after finishing it. There was more to it, but I don't feel like ranting off topic.

BIG HEAD mode is in
Doppelschwert replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
And yet, not a single pun about heads from lephys, the self acclaimed pun smith. His stack of puns seems to be kind of headless. Or maybe he didn't buy enough ahead? I'm sure big head mode will pay off during the final encounter and the ending. -
BIG HEAD mode is in
Doppelschwert replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No, I think you had it right the first time. After all... Sawyer can be rather big headed. Well, to be honest I'm a bit suprised there are so few negative reactions. Given how many rejoice the fact that resources haven't been "wasted" on romances, multiplayer/co-op and so forth, I thought atleast some would climb the barricades about this feature, which costs reasources to a very little gain. The way I understand this stuff (which means I don't), they just have to scale up some part of a mesh somewhere. I mean, if they wanted to make your whole character bigger by 10%, it's just scaling a 3d model, that shouldn't be that hard. Increasing just the head is probably harder, but given that you can select different faces for your character, this stuff is probably modular anyway, so it shouldn't be such a big deal. How many ressources do you estimate to be 'wasted' on this mode? -

Does the description of Big Hat Mode actually say 'Thanks Josh?' -
Puzzles in crpgs
Doppelschwert replied to Hiro Protagonist II's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I actually can't think of any puzzle in the IE games I didnt't like, but I also have forgotten what the fellwood was all about. In general, I like riddles like the ones in spellhold and mathy stuff. In the coven in mask of the betrayer, there is a guy that plays 'hells' with you, which is basically the boardgame 'mastermind'. I'm somehow torn on this one. I hated it the first couple times I played the game, but the last time I devised an algorithm to always win against that bastard. Devising the algorithm took some time (turns out you can easily look up algorithms for mastermind, which I didn't do and didn't know about back then) so it detracted from the game for some time, but then I felt really smug about it when I cashed in against the npc, which was totally worth it. -
IGN Article about PoE.
Doppelschwert replied to GrayAngel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Oh c'mon bruce. Scroll to the top of the page. Know what's written there? Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS) You know what doesn't belong there? Social campaigning. I don't care how relevant or important that is for society, it doesn't belong here. It belongs to off-topic or you can argue via PNs all day long, but don't derail threads that are of actual public interest in the game with your issues. As a kind reminder: To get back on the actual topic: well your background cant be changed, starting gear will be replaced in few minutes Given the low level setting, I don't think that we will be able to exchange loot quite that fast, especially the armor. You can probably buy a lot as soon as you are in town, but I think you'll only get the local aesthetics, so the starting gear from far away lands may actually be unique for quite some time into the game. -
Someone should definitely make a romance mod where half of the conversation features class abilities. Monk is then probably going to be reserved for the SM folks though. But to stay on topic, I'd also be interested in wether the starting gear is actually different mechanical wise or only has a different look. I also like the Ixamitl Plains Brigandine, but I wonder if it has the same stats as the fur clothing.

IGN Article about PoE.
Doppelschwert replied to GrayAngel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This is probably coming across the wrong way, but when I look at how much you enjoy the off topic of this thread, I'm somehow confused why exactly you locked the other one earlier instead of just pruning/moving it... To get back on topic: Is anyone else wondering under which circumstances the enemies defenses are being displayed? I mean the little window with Fortitude, Deflection etc. in it. It seems that the numbers appear after there has been a check against them? Or is it maybe governed by the lore skill? Or just some kind of test mode? Displaying the enemies defenses seems to be giving out way too much information to me. You'll have no reason to think if you just know which are the lowest defenses to target. -

So, are you guys going to pick your cultural background in favour of having cool looking starting gear or are you going for flavour? I'm torn on this one. -
When they are all female, how does it make sense to call them female in the first place? Sounds more like a biological definition in this case. In particular, if you can't be a male, then reproduction without males is not scary in the first place. The angst is all about being left out of the fun They are hybridization species between striped whiptail and western whiptail, which both have males, but hybridization of these species cause for some reason that no healthy males are born and as all whiptail lizards can use parthenogenesis to reproduce it has made possible that female members of this species can still reproduce by themselves, which has lead existence of all-female population, even though there is technically possibility for males. Yeah just reread it and edited while you answered. Interesting to know, thanks for the link! There will be no jokes. Period. Excuse me. I need to kill myself. Period. Fixed that for you.

Scientific english in a topic I'm not familiar with doesn't help understanding it seems. Anyway, if you can't be a male, then reproduction without males is not scary in the first place. Yeah, I think he seriously just wants to take an antifeminist stance in a video game. Why are you equating anti-feminist with anti-female? Feminism is a supremacist, marxist, sexist, violent dogma allergic to facts. Female is a gender. I said you are anti-feminist, which, given the way you just answered, seems true to me. This seems to be your motivation for excluding females, not that you hate women in general. I don't see where I equate anything apart from bruce joining us and the lulz. Am I to understand your complain that you actually hate females instead of feminism, or what is your point?
-
Yeah, I think he seriously just wants to take an antifeminist stance in a video game. I'm pretty sure there are more people that will banish females from their party for the same reasons, he's just one of the few that voice their opinion on this. Whatever you may think of that, I'm just here for the impending lulz.
