Of course, but if it's inspired by Louisiana's environment..? Edit: BUT... if... VTM doesn't seem like a too far of a stretch (IF). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_set_in_Louisiana Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead. In movies, Swamp Thing, Haunted Mansion... etc. Spooky place... spooky stories... vampires?? Far-fetched with no basis? Probably, yes. Why Louisiana, specifically (hand-picked)? If you can discern or decrypt this, and see a red-line trend about fictious other media taking place in this region, mayhaps it be a hint? (Please be VTM... or PTM, Pillars: The Masquerade ;p)

Spend some extra time thinking what sort of character do you want to play? This tends to be my biggest obstacle, because if I don't have a desireable avatar in the game I tend to get exhausted and less inclined to come back to the game. So, yeah, it lies in your hands to make a character that you can enjoy. I can't even count how many times I've restarted BG, IWD, Dragon Age, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, even Arena, Divinity, Wasteland and so on and forth into infinity. Restarted because the character I made just didn't interest me and I get bored with my own creation. Pillars of Eternity has TONS of options, so finding a combination for you will probably not be much of an issue. I just think you need to find it in yourself to.. well... find it.

I don't do well with "Game of the year", I play too many games to particularly say "This was the best one". Instead, I will go for experiences and what's most "memorable". Most memorable experience(s) of 2015: 1) Pillars of Eternity (Released) I've only finished it once, created several new characters (solo mode to Defiance Bay, PotD, oddball comps etc.), have barely touched White March (waiting on Part 2, going to make a musketeer Cipher). Suffice to say, I remembet what I felt when playing, the excitement, the joy and a sense of constantly diving deeper for the next plot point, exploring each corner. I remember the whole game and each part, from petty side-quests to bigger revelations. Great circumstantial plays that saved my party in a pinch and character developments. 2) Underrail (Released) Ever played a game that just sweeps you off your feet and suddenly you've played 20 some hours? Yep. Although I played this during Early Access, it was a great journey and knowing this was something to look out for. A bit of a barrier to get into again, just like the first time, but when I overcome that obstacle again, then gold and glory awaits on the other side. 3) NEO Scavenger (Released) This was a completely new experience to me. Not the world or the Civ aesthetics per say, but what I would like to call and name an "Enlightenment System". It's such a great and learning experience, that talking about it doesn't do it any justice, you have to play it yourself. Preferably blind. And preferably without and restraining yourself from Wikias and Hint forums. This is a game you simply learn to understand while playing it (and dying, a lot). 4) Battle Brothers (Early Access) What happens if you combine TES: Arena, Darklands and XCOM? Battle Brothers. If this was or is the developer(s) intention, I don't know, but regardless what he/she/they intended: it's working. Albeit repetitive at this stage, and only a meager Early Access title, great things await this gem. 5) Project Zomboid (Early Access) Fantastic! One of the absolute best LARPing simulators out there. I never got into single player, neither did I get into any PvP or the like. Instead I forged bonds with real people (met some friends), invested a lot of time creating characters out of game (background story, portrait, writing etc. etc.). A fun game if you are imaginative, creative, or just like zombie survival. A great Skill system, fatigue, hunger, sanity, crafting, injury system, bordering near or close to reality. ---------------------- These are the titles I've sunk most time into, but what would a list be without some honorable mentions? Honors: 1) Divinity: Original Sin Fight with your friend about video game decision simulator! Loving the game and it's on the shelf in line of getting played. Just need to play with someone who's intelligent and tactical and doesn't take half a year to make a decision in dialogue. Anyone? I also have Dragon Commander to finish first (chronology). 2) Wasteland & 2 I'm a gamer who wants to play and progress chronologically. So whenever I fire up Wasteland 2, I can't quite stop thinking about playing Wasteland, and when I play Wasteland I feel old and slightly confused (used to features that didn't exist back then). A difficult process to enter, as it requires a certain mindset. With that said, I do find Wasteland 2 fun and interesting,.it's just busy work because of aforementioned reasons... (remake.. inXile? :D)

Which games would you like Obsidian to develop the most?
Osvir replied to Bleak's topic in Obsidian General
I voted on "Fallout" and "Pillars of Eternity II". Fallout Thinking a little bit out of the box here in a couple of lines but something got me thinking the other day... why Fallout? (Except from the obvious marketing boosts and popularity in media) Because, personally, when Fallout 3 did release, Fallout kind of died to me. The best Fallout games (again, in my opinion), are Fallout and Fallout 2. They have the gameplay, the charms, the graphics and the plot/story all set in place, in such a great way that neither Fallout 3 or New Vegas could achieve. It isn't all about Turn-Based or about First Person or anything like that. It's just that Fallout and Fallout 2 really managed to capture the world and the aesthetics, and they managed to do it extremely well. My suggestion is actually something like New Vegas, but maybe for the Wasteland universe, and I bet it wouldn't be as costly as being a partner with Bethesda (potentially). Furthermore, inXile and Obsidian kind of have an unofficial partnership (friendship) not hidden behind heaps of beauracracy and hidden agendas/manipulations for most monetary gain, which, again, could be beneficial(?) in such a collaboration. Or why not the NEO Scavenger universe, or some other "post-apocalyptic" setting/universe and indie studio looking to branch out their brands and IPs? So... why the Fallout universe? (Because Bethesda can pay for it? Or because Fallout is just a desirable brand on the market?) Pillars of Eternity II Uhm, well, hmm.... *looks at profile badges* ... duh? -
New Class: Runesmith
Osvir replied to evilcat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A thought/thumbs-up for creativity: The sound, look and title of "animaniac" is great but it feels like a "perk" (talent). Kinda Fallout-esque Perk dark humour I also like the Construct type summoning idea... it feels kind of "Soul Engineer"-ish... a steampunk equivalent... but maybe more accurately "soulpunk" Edit: Runepunk? -
New Class: Runesmith
Osvir replied to evilcat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
For some more potential inspiration, maybe, for summoning mechanics/general class mechanics~ that might sync with some thoughts/concepts here http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/69609-ritualist-class-idea/?fromsearch=1# -
Ever played a game that got you lost in time? This is such a game. I thought I had played 4 hours, I had played 20 hours. Although, it took me a couple of New Game try outs before I got into it (2 or 3). I felt it was a game that required some effort, lots of text and staying focused and attentive, but as soon as I overcame that "barrier" it just flowed with no problems and I just surfed on the wave. Now waiting for official release before I dive right into it again :D EDIT: IT'S RELEASED!? I THOUGHT IT WAS 17TH FOR SOME REASON!!! AAAAAAAAH!! O_O

Hopefully there will remain no equivalent since typically in D&D games the characters gain experience, thus levels, simply from killing mob's; whereas in PoE experience is gained from achieving a milestone (eg, complete a quest, add new beastiary entry). The reason traditional RPG games need to give a level-based reward, like a "status," is so that players can feel a sense of accomplishment after killing 10,000 rats. I see this as a false sense of accomplishment that is geared towards distracting players from the fact that they are engaging in an experience-wheel grind. Again, simply gaining a level is not a real accomplishment. Instead, significance comes from standing and reputation, or faction ratings, which is earned or lost through player engagement in the gaming world. Personally, I prefer the way Wizardry 8 does this, where it also does not matter what level the character has reached, but instead rewards the player for how the character is built. For instance, if your fighter reaches 100 Strength then a new powerful skill is unlocked. And the figher might reach 100 Strength around level 13, or maybe around level 17+ depending on how you built the class. The common theme in your suggestions appears to be a false sense of reward from engaging in the dreaded exp grind. But I think you were just brainstorming in order to give a general counter-reply to the OP, in which case apologies if I honed in on the wrong point. Games like PoE and Wizardry do a much better job of giving proper reward for better player actions. At least in my opinion. Sounds good and all, just one problem with your counter-points: Pillars has a level system, and gated rewards (can't cast a level 5 spell at level 1 can you?). I'm pretty certain PoE 2 will continue that theme. But yeah, counter-points towards OP and brainstorm (kinda my thing )

Rework? Nah.. improve where able? Yes. I've heard that in D&D Classes gain certain "status" depending on Level (Adventurer levels, Hero levels, Legendary levels, God levels etc.) What are PoE's equivalent? By PoE2 you should be around lvl 12-13. What does that mean? Are you a Hero? A Lord? A Champion? What significance does that have? What sort of capabilities does a Fighter have as a Level 14+ Class? Can they do a "Knockdown Smash" and knockdown everyone in a radius aroubd them? Can Rangers get a 2nd pet and could Wizards stack and cast several spells in quick succession? Druid, could they go into a Natural, Elemantalistic Rage? Chanters shattering mountains and causing avalanches with a whisper? Of course, could be class specific gear as well, a special "Fighter Only" Heavy Armor, but that shouldn't mean that a Monk wouldn't be able to use any other Heavy Armor. Just thoughts, writing on phone.

I think the meaning he is trying to convey is "vehicle", but considering he's a spoken word artist, "car" probably has a better rhyme or flow (in terms of his poetry).

I think you misunderstand Ea's message if you think he's addressing the "black" label. He and everyone in the video are addressing all labels and embracing the "human" factor that we're all from the same place. I thought that was kind of straight forward and obvious, there's people of all origin and cultures in that video, even if it's Ea's voice, words and production, they are all representing, participating in the creation of the video, having the same cause and idea (that we are human).

Wishes/Dreams/Suggestions from the past still lingers: Would love if Eternity 2 had a new individual storyline and a continuation... (A choice) Scenario 1: Watcher Character A) Play/Start in Pillars of Eternity in Dyrwood B) Load save and continue into Pillars of Eternity 2 in Valia(X) Scenario 2: Other Character (A Natlan, Valian, or Ixamitl Prince, perhaps?) A) Play/Start in Pillars of Eternity 2 in Valia(X) Depends on how they expand into Pillars of Eternity 2 though... will they keep the Dyrwood areas? Or will it be more of a BG2 sequel, where you explore a whole new region (Amn) and can't backtrack up to the northern Sword Coast. Will it be a whole new character? (DA:O, DA2, DA:I) Or will it be a continuation of the same character? (BG, BG2) Valia(X) is just an example (so is "Prince" as well) General idea~ a sort of Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Half-Life sort of interaction (Or WarCraft, WarCraft II, WarCraft III). The whole story told from the perspective of several characters/races/campaigns, rather than just a story told from one angle. Of course, that's probably a ton of work that'd take several sequels/expansions before even getting there... Oh well. A boyish heart can dream

I played Closed Beta, long time ago and I've heard that Tamriel Unlimited have improved on a lot of things. I've been tempted to get it and start playing but... it would've functioned better with smaller servers, like DayZ, Project Zomboid, The Forest and many more survival games. Not that TESO should've been a "survival game", but systemically, how survival games handle Online Multiplayer is really good (in my opinion). There's less people online, and you get more of an immersive experience. Although, survival games differ in the ways that they have no story, but you rather build the story yourself. Perhaps TESO would've managed better thematically and introductory in such a way? Start wherever, as a farmer, as a soldier, as a street thug, an artist, trader etc. etc. and just "pop in" there, and other players being able to do the same thing wherever in the world. Random generated spawn is brilliant in Online games, because it makes you feel more unique in the world. It is unfortunate, I like Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall and Arena a lot, but TESO doesn't deliver for me. Like I said, I am tempted to buy it because I found what I played of it interesting (if it had been single player, but other players were too much of a distraction, as usual, and immersion breaking story in context of other players), I want an "Offline Mode" for it first... or... preferably, I'd love to see Bethesda create (Single Player) Elder Scrolls VI: Tamriel, with the choice to just, pick a character anywhere on the world map, and start playing that character's journey to wherever you choose to.

Is it a card or is the Player simply a Leader, no more explanation needed? Or do you get to pick faction (and be the leader of it) or can you randomize it (e.g. in Dead of Winter you have a Survivor deck, during preparation, shuffle it and hand out 4 random survivors to all participants, and each gets to pick 2 to start off with~ of course, you could bend the rules and allow each Player to just pick 2 favorites from the get go too)? And if you get a faction, does each faction get their own perks, or do you win favor of various factions by the luck of the draw (towards your conquest to become "The Lord")? (Faction related card draw~?). Pacing sounds simple enough, and all I can say about it is... looking forward to play wi... obliterate my friends I'm also not surprised that the boardgame community is resistant towards technological aids (two interfaces, physical+digital, awkwardness, and yet another item to fit on the board, as well as attention going back and forth). I just think that AR that will spawn from HoloLens technology is potentially a game changer in all industries, and that the interface (headset/goggles/glasses**) seems to be the right fit for boardgames and top-down games. Just look at the E3 HoloLens demonstration, they made MineCraft almost look like a boardgame Otherwise, HoloLens (Again, or other future spawned sophisticated AR headset)+3D Printer in combination with one another sounds like something that could bump efficiency in making standees* or other assets/props for boardgames? ........... if you're reading this Microsoft, through some algorithm (highly unlikely, I know), gently pass Zero Radius a HoloLens and see what they can do. * I managed to squeeze in some on-topic/title material at least xD ** In theory, a Player with a HoloLens playing a card game could "hold" the cards in his/her hands.
-
MEH! I thought this was gonna be a thread about gaming and not consuming and business strategies.
-
Last I read, the HoloLens device was speculated to go for "up to" $900. Well spent money (about the same price as a decent flat screen TV), if Microsoft can fix the peripheral issue (The screen on HoloLens is criticized to be about the size of an iPhone screen). Otherwise it's just going to be money pretty much "donated" to Microsoft so that they can develop HoloLens 2.0. Or some other company will take it apart, learn from it, and create a better machine. I also think that AR has more advantage over VR, with the controls and all. But when Emotiv or future EEG devices have caught up, that's when fun times begins, and I do think that VR has the advantage in combination with EEG. Although, further speculation and... in theory an AR device could play "VR" by occupying the entire screen space with pictures/information etc.. So... in other words: AR > VR Because AR can be VR, but VR can't be AR.
