Rarity of magic items?
TrashMan replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It makes magic less magical...and cheapens the entire setting. That's why. Even just naming an item differently can have an impact bigger than you think. Names cary meaning. There are connotation that are unavoidable. How something is presented affec the entire atmosphere. Designing a game is not to be taken lightly. -
Rarity of magic items?

But different tiers (or types) of masterwork items is reasonable, I think. One type of alloy makes the blade heavier, giving more armor penetration and damage, but resulting in slower attacks. Another technique may make it somewhat more flexible, yet resistant, giving a bonus to parry attempts, at the cost of armor penetration. Et cetera. As long as one material isn't both abdundant and clearly superior....yes. That can work. but for simplicity sake, the number of materials should be kept low. -
My bad. Was thinking of ToEE which uses 3.5 methinks. That one would be more problematic. I wouldn't say it would require an enormous amount of feats (probably two feats + your two traits, depending on your race and religion), but it would definitely take a big bite out of your key abilities. So, yeah, I agree that Pathfinder would make it hard to play a character like that. I had a similar problem creating my current Pathfinder character, a half-orc fighter who, due to her upbringing (which I won't get into here since it's pretty complex), is a classically trained singer and is well educated in the academic fields. I eventually just paid the feats to make her the way I wanted, and figured her combat abilities will catch up as I level up. Pathfinder is actually better at this than previous D&D. Thank heavens.

But peopel who play with their own parties create stories of their own. Really this isn't a one or the other issue. One DOES NOT exclue the other. So I really don't see why would anyone be against it. No one forces you to create your own party. Just play normally, with the NPC's the developers provided.

This implies that what you want is right and just, and everyone else who disagrees is injust and evil. -

Please, feel free to explain how misogynistic writing is appealing to people who are not misogynists. Go on. I'm waiting. Because your definitions on what constitues as what and what people must like, and how they msut think, and what they must mean does not really interest me. -

And by doing that they become holy cows. Over-protected. And often abusing that status and milking smypathy for all it's worth. You can't even argue agaisnt someone holding such oppinions, because no matter how you word something or how much care you take you WILL be attacked and branded as a raccist/mysgonist/anti-semite or whatever...if not by the specific person you're debating with, then by the legion of self-righteous crusaders who only wait for an opportuntiy ot prove ot everyone how more liberal and toleran and better they are than everyone else by riding the PC fad train to infinity and beyond. Giving them special treatments won't fix anything. Treating them normally will. -
Looking back at Obsidian games there's a very interesting pattern. The protagonist is practicly always special. KOTOR 2 - you have a special apower PST - you're the Nameles One NWN - you miracolously survived with the shard. Your'e special and everyone is interested in you. etc.. And with the Explanation of power from the soul and reincarnation (which I'm not a big fan off....and is it me or does it resembe the Nameless One with the memory from past lives bit?) I'm beginning to suspect you're going to be an exceptionsal soul or some prophecized champion or something.

Experience for Killing Enemies
TrashMan replied to Jojobobo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Can't believe how man poeple insist on having to be rewarded with XP. Like a good story or atmospheric experience isn't enough? Better trash games like Splinter Cell...no XP there. No levels. Worst game ever. Seriously.. This is a problem when you are trying ot break the mold in a good way. People are so used to doing things one way that they insist that is has to be done that way and it's the only good way to do it, even if they can't even articulate why. -

Except it's only political propaganda because you disagree with it and therefore see it as political propaganda. It's like all those people who say that Harry Potter and Dungeons and Dragons are trying teach kids to be devil worshipers. And it's only offensive / a problem / necessary because you choose to see it as that.... -

Ahh..but you see, when it comes to other topics you mention, no one is basicly trying to guilt trip you or implie oyu are bad/backward/ignorant and what have you. It is normal to want things you like in a game...well, within sense. Sometimes ones prefernces don't mesh well with what is known about the game, so pushing your agenda then is being extreemly self-centered. Otherwise? No problem wiht desires. The problem arises when it's no anymore about posting a desire and more about making political speeches. I frankly think that specificy segregating and makring something is jsut as racists as ignorign it. There is no "white history" and "black history". There is only human history. And some regions have a well documented history, some don't. Same have a dominanat populace who naturally made most of the history of that area. -
Rarity of magic items?

Bad idea. Having too many tiers is stupid. You have to start askign yoursef - why even use weapons from material A if material B is in every way superiro and abdundant enough? stone/bone weaposn were quickyl dropped in favor of bronze. Bronze weapons dissapeared once Iron weapons came. Iron weapons were quickly phased out by steel. The more materials nad qualities oyu put, the sillier it becomes. normal, masterwork and special (silver, cold iron?), mythril? No more. -

In other words, everyone who doesn't agree with you 100%? Good to know that the overly vocal minorty isn't at all starting to terrorize the majority, abusing it's protected status to it's fullest... -

No. ***** I'm sick and tired of these thread. Not just here but in every forum. I'm beginning to DESPISE Political Correctnes in all forms...simply because of posts like this. People who want to force it everyhwere and insist that if you're not spreading their belief/value system like a Jehovas witenss on speed, you are a very bad and immoral person. Peopel to whom everything is an issue and everything must be a platform for the mto express their dissatisfaction. I still recall the Resident Evil "contraversy" with black zombies (becasue it was set in africa) adn the uproar. And no one complained about the previous several games with white zombies... I'm sick of it. Sick of it beyond conventional words to express it. I don't care which race/sex/belief/whatever you think is under attack or offended or misrepreted. The next person to start preching PC to me and showing it in my face, will face a crusade against him so brural, that the God-Emperor and the Inquisiton will wince in horror and Khorne himself will loose his lust for blood. -

Actually, off the top of my head, the biggest douches in gaming have been Caucasian. I really don't expect the game to cater to my every whim. Neither do I expect aht every culture/nation in the game is structured exactly as I want. As long as there is one decent characte, ti's all that takes. but I dont' evne consider that as a equirement. Sure, I might like it more if it's like that, but why should I be catered to? I fully disagree with the idea we should be able to star revolutions and talk everyone into our view on things. -
Hmm...Crasnomyr was already mentioned.. Well, we always have EXACLIBUR. I kinda liked the verison from Merlin: THIS ONE (12:00) sound can make it feel so potent And this one: this one too (7:40 onward) .. but this version is redicolously overpowered. Cutting trouhg EVERYTHING.

Intelligent Evil Playthrough
TrashMan replied to d0riangray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
... thatis pretty much what evil is. Not necessarily. For example, we have rules governing scientific and medical research that can potentially hinder progress. We can't perform experiments on humans. If we want to test drugs on humans, we have to go through a lot of testing on animals to ensure that it's safe. All that can slow down how quickly we develop cures and treatments for diseases. If we were not constrained by ethics or morality, and we performed experimentation on humans, we can potentially save many more lives than are lost. Or you could porentially cause even greater suffering. -
I know who he was talking about. My replay was exactly mean to indicate that i'ts really not creepy. And callign her crazy stalker bitch? A bit overly emotional, no? Really.. some people seem to live just so they can hate. To them there is no shades of grey, no different interpretations, no patience...I guess if a mother watches her child sleep it's CREEPY. If you lover watches you lovingly it's CREEPY.

I always considered crafting a bit...problematic. It raises too many questions when your master swordsman is ALSO a master blacksmith. Where does he find time for both? If he's a master blacksmith/enchanter, why is he adventuring? If he can create epic items, he could retire from adventuring easily. I don't really want to see crafting that can do anything more than basics. Crafting legendary and great items is something that should be comissioned from masters.

Rarity of magic items?
TrashMan replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
1) I don't see how. It was never said that hte setting is swimming in magic 2) Why would it be bland? Plenty of games feature exactly that. I hate the notion that CRPG are becoming so loot-centric. I guess it's the MMO/Diablo influence. That mastercrafted sword I had made by the master smith in town? It served me trough the game faithfully. Why should it be "bland"? A weapon that served your from beginning to end..that fact alone makes it legendary. Even better if you can customize such weapons (apperance) or simply because you wielded it for so long, you get a bonus to it because you're so familiar with it (easily done by tracking number of kills/strikes for a specific weapon)
