Unwinnable Encounters?
TrashMan replied to Tsuga C's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Because everything in the game must exist only to fuel the players ego or to be killed by him? I DETEST, DESPISE, HATE that kind of thinking. And now I hate you too for utttering it.- 137 replies

If you're only walking along at a slow pace, you can make treks in field plate. Unless you're in the desert...in which case any armor is like an oven. -
Unwinnable Encounters?
TrashMan replied to Tsuga C's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think the players ego needs some spanking every once in a while. My party being the ebnd of all things is not onnly stupid, it's also unbelievable. As Spoony put it - dragons should f*** your **** up! Players should learn some humility occasionally.- 137 replies

Different races having +-1 to max values sound good. Also, stats having an impact on everything and being multi-use. For example, for any warrior both STR and AGI/DEX should be importnat. Archers too. AFter all ,yo uhave to draw that bow. Taht requires strength. And fighters have to dodge blows and be agile to hit their targets. Maybe to hit bonuses would depends on weapons, but not be exclusive on one stat? Some weapons would depend on STR and DEX equally. Bigger, heavier weapons would depend more on STR Lighter weapons more on Dex. Like (STR+DEX)/2 for one-handed swords (2*STR+DEX)/2 for two-handers (STR+2*DEX)/2 for daggers Obviously not these specific forumals, but you get the idea.

Your words Slaunyeh...not mine. I guess you never played PnP? And if you coudln't understand by now, I don't know that to say. Fantasy adventure is all about atmosphere. AFAIC, save-scumming hurts that atmosphere. By trying to re-create the atmospehre and the broadness of possibilities PnP offers. You got some imagination. I don't think I have to give you all the answers on a silver platter.

As another user already stated though, that can be annoying if you just want to change the armor of 2 characters with each other. You can't just swap them (since the first would have none), you need a bogus armor to swap around the first, the swap it with the second, then go back to the first and give him the seconds armor. That's just bad design in my book. Why? Why couldn't you just swap them? Select and dragon armor 1 from the character onto another character and drop it over their amor. Armor swapped. It wouldn't let you drop the armor into the inventory or somewhere else, but swappign armor should be easy. It's a mechanics/UI isse, not the conceptual one.

I'm curious bro, what is a true cRPG according to you? Let's drop the save-system thing for now (unless that is what defines any game for you). A perfect cRPG would IMHO, try to emulate the PnP experience as close as possible.

Unless you somehow got hte abiltiy to read minds, you dont' get to say that. Doesn't make sense to you, because you have trouble listening. Or reading. Specificly that you are reading too much into what I want. Like I said..I can argue for any viewpoint if I fee like it. Not really. Maybe. Depends.

Yes and no. Exmples aplenty, but not actual proof. Because this is not the sort of thing you CAN prove. After all, how can I prove that X is what lead to change Y, even if it makes 100% sense? After all, how is a game balanced? Trough testing. How does one test a game? By playing. How do people play? However tehy want. Will testesrs save-scum? Most certanly. Will that affect their view on the blance/usefulness? Most certanly. Will that feedback influence balancing? Defiantely. Can I prove it? No. Do I care if I can prove it or no? No. What does that mean for you? No examples. Deal with it.

It is irrelevant because the "playstyle" is irrlevant. Frustration is relevant. Why should I play the game that rustrates me? Well, I can argue that save everywhere doesn't fit a design of what a true CRPG should be. **** How about a hypothetical scenario. Not beign able to sell loot whwnever I wnat frustrates me. Therefore the game should allow you to sell everything directly from the inventory. Naturally, because o this hte loot drops would probably have ot be balanced differently, but who cares, right? If you want to onyl sell at shops and limit your inventory and $$$ gained, you can. No one is forcing you to use the sell system. And therefore, you have no right to complain that it's a bad system and shouldn't be in the game. If you do, you are taking away my holy options. Indeed. But every sane man campaigns for the game to be to his liking, and the other guy should mod the game to get what he wants. If the sitation was reversed and hte devs said they will go with checkpoitn based save -system, I could point you to mods too. so it's kinda a moot point.

Simple. Regular worn items - can be taken, but have to be replaced with something equally usable. You can't just ake away someone's armor. You have to drag&drop another to replace it. No default intangible/weightless equipment. Important NPC items: either they can't be taken away OR they can, but if you do sell them or drop them, the specific party member will get angry. Quite angry. And buy it back/pick it up. After which they wont' let you touch it.

That would depend on the class/encounter/area desing. If it's designed with a clear bias towards save-everywhere, then those who are agaisnt save-everywhere probably would still mind. Would I still object? No. I'm not objecting to it now (even tough I'm arguing against it). Class/encouters/areas concern me more than the save system TBH.

I don't recall saying it was. I just object to the whole notion of everyone pro-save-everywhere declaring their prefference as factually the best thing since swiss cheese. Funny, it appeared to me as the other way around - you declaring limited saves as negative (despite anything substantia lto back it up with) It's not a compromise. Period. You do not declare something a compromise- especially not when the other side disagrees. Ah.h..again with "you should accept frustration, but I shouldn't". Your "compromise" doesnt' affect you at all. Your compromise leaves me frustrated. You get everything you want. That isn't a compromise by any definition of the word. Because that is what this ultimatively boils down to. Something you and your compatriots constatnly ignore is that this is ultimatively about more than just "play style" and "save here"

The difference is in your head, because you consider it acceptable as a "compromise". It isn't. No amount of willpower changes the reality. Also, all games are forced to be played in one game or another. After all, I can't play Amnesia as a FPS, now can I? Hence, I am forced to play a certain (sneaky-hidey) way. And also the idea that game should enable anything as an option is also a flawed one. It shouldn't. That's what mod tools are for. People who want to save "often" can save - only not as often as they would like. Big whoopin loss.

in YOUR oppinion. And plenty of people apparently disagree. No. It cannot simply "be ignored". You keep talking about it like it's some kind of comprmise, when it isn't. My frustration remains in full, your goes away completely. How the hell is that a compromise?

TrashMan replied to norolim's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Meh... The entire setting idea doesn't really appeal to me. I'm not a fan of time-travel. Nor of mixing magis/medieval fantasy with high-tech. Nor of overly meaphysical/philosophical stories. Or too weird/bizzare/gloomy stuff. Which is why I was never attracted to PS:T. -
YOU want a power fantasy. Not me. If I want to induldge in a power fantasy, I'd go for different games.

It's not a cheat becasue it's unavoidable, no matter what. It's impossible to play a game a second time without running into the same things. Unless the developers somehow find a way to randmize EVERYTHING.

Paladins and Bards
TrashMan replied to AlphaShard's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Paladins need auras. Not commands. Think Diablo 2. An aura that weakens the undead? An aura that grants courage? More stuff like that. And of course, something like smite. -
The issue is that, in terms of compromise (different players want different things), if there is to be only one method of saving ... then, while self-discipline isn't something we always have a lot of, all the time, it is definitely a player option to exercise it...whereas no multiple saves etc. creates a distinct lack of option. So while you're not getting what you specifically feel you need, it is, imo, the best way to handle it. The game designers are not responsible for individual's lack of gameplay self-discipline any more than an author is responsible for an individual's inability to not read the last page of the book first. I don't really care about your rationalization. The "best way" is subjective. And you support the one approach that caters to you. Your frustration (15 minute spaced apart saves) is by no means more important than mine. What you want is no more imporant what what I want. What you consider a compromise isn't one, no matter how many times you claim it is. There's more to this than just saving. You keep dancing about the issue by repeating the "just ignore it" mantra (basicly saying, the system is not the problem, you are) I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work that way. I'm not the problem. You are. ... see, I can do this crap too? Don't be. You don't know what I want.
