Just seen Tokyo Godfathers. It's a great movie.

I don't see the eye having resistance to fire being watery and all, but it's a dragon in a fantasy setting so there's no firm rule there. Yeah, I don't see a party of 6 winning againt a mobile, flying dragon - it would have to bring it down first and revent it from taking off again (via spells, trickery, or terrain like a cave). Even then fighting a dragon should require a LOT of preparation and luck. Then again, I dont see a dragon as particuary fast/nimble, given it's size.

That is a stupid comment and deserves to be chided. It literally qualifies that the race of the individual has affected the assessment of how quality the job is. In an ideal world, the idea that she was a "black cosplayer" would never come up. But it did. What exactly does it mean to say "For a black cosplayer?" It's no different than saying "For a white person, this was pretty impressive." It implicitly states that the colour of one's skin influenced the decision, and the implicit assumption is always going to be that had the skin colour been different, the result wouldn't have been impressive. No one says "For a black cosplayer, she is pretty impressive" meaning "but had she been asian/white/whatever, it was HOLY CRAP AMAZING." Bollocks. It is you who are assigning negative meaning to it - it is not inherent to the text. What is is is an factual observation - the girl in question WAS a black cosplayer. In the real world the physical characteristics of individual - sex, height, skin color, hair color, weight, etc - DO affect cosplaying. Because the goal of cosplaying is to look like the character. So yes, the color of skin DOES influence it, because a darker skinned person will have a harder job to loook like a white character and vice-versa. And no, it doesn't imply that it wouldn't be impressive otherwise. If I were to notice that this is a guy playing a woman, am I being sexist? Am I racist/sexist if I notice B looks closer to the character than A? So no, if I were to dress like Samuel L. Jackson and you said "For a white person, this was pretty impressive" I wouldn't get offended.

Not that simple. This is a mechanics and UI change - and one that would affect game balance. Not to simple as a switch. -

Imagine myself? Would never do it.Think about it. I'm on a long journey in hostile terrioty. I have no idea what's wating for me behind the next bend. And I'm already carrying lots of supplies, armor, weapons and whatnot. Fighting will all that? Go ahead - take a big campers backpack, stuff it full of stuf and go do some karate fighting. Then add armor and weapons. If I would be taking anything at all it would be something who's weight/worth ratio is good. Small, valubale items. I'd only take a sword if I need a spare or backup. -

To me it looks the other way around. The goblet is secure and simple and the glass is dirty, broken and cracked all over. -
I'm upset about everything. LGBT? It's not like they are the only ones. Anyone fighting for or agaisnt something (racism, religion, sex, idea or principle) can go to extreems. He who fights monsters ends up seeing monsters everywhere. The mening of words and their impact changes constantly. I don't see "gay" being used as an insult going away anytime soon, altough I see it loosing most of it's sting. Once a word is overused, people tend to find another word.

Marriage is a lot of things to a lot of people Have I ever claimed otherwise? So is everything else that happen in nature. Like cannibalism. Pedophilia. Black widows devouring their mates. Lions killing cibs. Deseases. Etc.. And how does a name change prevent all that? Even wihout the law, any competent lawyer could already form a contract that would basicly grant practicly all the same rights. That said, religious institutions are free to do as they wish when it comes to their practices and rules.

Preaching to the choir.. Over the years the attacks by the "Political Correctness White Knights" have gone way up. The same zeal and fanaticism one would usually find in religious fundamentalist you cna now find among these "new crusaders". It is ironic how hatefull and intolerant the people caliming to fight for tolerance can be. People get insulted over everything these days. I got branded a chauvinist for using the term "fairer sex" (because apprently, fair implies pale skin and pale skin is a result of women being locked up in homes) There was some article about a black cosplayer (cosplaying as Sailor Venus) that got offended because people notice the skin color. Well, OK; there was more than that - there were some really hatefull comments there and such douchebags really need a good bump on the head. The funny thing is that I agreed with most of the article - except for one part that branded the following comnet as racist: "For a black cosplayer (not to be racist) she did an amazing job!" Full article here: http://www.xojane.com/issues/mad-back-cosplayer-chaka-cumberbatch So the guy actually compliments her and she gets offended. Because he noticed that she's black and the character is white. It would be like me (who is almsot 2 meter tall) cospalying Tyrenn Lannister from TGOT (who is a midget) and then feeling insulted when some tells me I did a good job considering I'm not a midget. My post was immediately deleted and the moderator was all high-and-mighty about me being racist. The same moderator that insulted me before when I posted about the trial of General Gotovina (and basicly called me a natzi and other things for suporting him) and never aplogized (after all charges were dropped and he was let free). So noticing physical apperance or characteristic is considered hatefull these days? Hate and insults are allowed, if they are aimed at "justified" targets? I weep for humanity.

Like a horse with blinders, you only see a very narrow path ahead of you and nothing else. No, just because IE games did X doens't mean PE MUST do that too. The idea that player should be rewarded for everything is nothing more than conditioning. And how does objective-XP take away that reward? It doesn't. You are just throwing a hissy fit over nothing. -

Defining a game genre by its title or a label on the intro screen or CD BOX is meaningless. I would just then say that the old goldbox games (like Pool of Radiance), BG, IWD etc. were not that much RPG as you would imagine. And I want those sort of games, not a game conceived from analyzing the words in the abbreviation called RPG. Oh? So the title of a genre is meaningless? How do you think genres get a title? Or do you think words and names are completley meaningless? So I guess a "horror" is not defined by it attempting to invoke fear/horror? -

Actually, a normal person could kill a dragon. But he has to be both lucky, smart and skilled. All it takes is a good hit in a vital spot (heart, brain, eyes). How you realise that hit is another matter. Sneak in while the dragon is sleeping? Ambush? distraction? Drop a giant boulder on it's head?

When you add a spike, you aren't really doing blunt damage anymore, but piercing...or should I say, you're doing primarily piercing, since blunt is a constant companion. And all that mass at the tip of maces/hammers and such also makes them more sluggish and difficult to recover.

Balancing Stealth vs Combat

I personally like Skyrim. It is a good RPG, but a different type of a RPG. A RPG stands for Role Playing Game - as long as you are playing a role, it technicly is a RPG. It doesn't technicly NEED XP or stats. Frankly, it might be interesting to try a game like that. This is one of the reasons I don't consider JRPG's as true RPG's - they may have interesting stories and characters (sometimes) but you don't really play a role. You play BATTLES. The characters are completely pre-defined in personality and there is nothing to play or decide. Not to say that makes them bad games - quite the contrary - but definitions exist for a reason. -

I am talking about hostile territories like dungeons which comprise 90% percent of such game, not peaceful towns. Anyway a party would comprise at least one thief and one typical fighter/barbarian, so as a general consensus the party could opt to do battle as much as possible. It's quite realistic. Disagree. A thief wouldn't rush into battle just to rob a corpse of a few coppers. It ain't worth it. A thief also wouldn't pick up every single piece of scrap to sell it. Barbarians are not stupid either. They wouldn't burden themselves with unnecessary crap. When deep in enemy territory, you do scavenge IF NECESSARY. But you don't pick up 20 swords and carry them with you to sell later. "Trash" items have no purpose to boot - other than for flavor. I mean, how pathetic must your hero be to collect 100 pieces of old, smelly rags just to sell them for 1 silver? -
Well maybe...maybe you could automate/script some things to reduce the workload. Let's say each NPC has a personality profile that determines how it will react to different tones. So every tone may backfire spectacularly. You just tried to smoothtalk a guy who despises smoothtalking.... Of course, the problem with scripting is the often too-robotic feel you get.

Meh... don't really care. Personally I consider marriage to be (by defintion) a union between a man and a woman. I don't have anything against gay couples having an union, I'd just prefer if it was called differenlty. But then again, definitions of words do change over time.... That said... I don't consider homosexuality "normal" (for a given definition of normal) or a beneficial thing for the human race. Natural? Maybe ... but natural is a very, VERY broad category. You can start your attacks on me now.

@ TRX850 I'm curious - how period accurate were your armors and weapons? I'm asking because that are a LOT of low-quality replicas out there, and they really handle completely different than the real thing. Which is why I look at really reputable sources - like ARMA.

Who is exactly insulting whom now? You put words into my mouth and fabricate situations outside of the system to find problem with it. So no, I don't consider your concernes valid, because they are a product of how you think an overblown system works, rather than asking me to clarify it. You got hung up the numbers, missing the point instead. OR to make it real clear - "there won't be anything that's 40 feet long assuming a properly balanced system". I mean, how hard is it to understand what I've been saying all this time? Small power curve, no HP inflation, focus on skills/feats, numbers matter. If there's anyone doing fencying it's you. I'm not the one who gets so hanged up on semantics or finding flaws in comparisons/examples that he misses teh point. Magic is a staple of fantasy. I see no problem with magic. Mages have fleshy bodies in the end too. And I disagree with your assesment of LOTR. You seem to be a big fan of overblowing things in an attempt to make a point. People in LOTOR never get severely wounded? Yeah, that's kinda expected. Unless you count Frodo's wounds, Gandalf and Boromir dying... Yeah, the gist of combat is to NOT get severely wounded. A severe wound is usually "game over". I still don't see any problems with LOTR because as far as fantasy goes, it is very believable. Funny you should mention that..because that's how you come off to me. I don't pretend anything. But I did fail in getting my point across, and now I doubt I can. Obviously you treat every media exactly the same and have a train of thought and reasoning that doesnt' really mesh well with mine. I wasn't aware you were tip-toing around anything. I already done that. You must have missed that.

Berserk...... looks promising. Heh...I noticed they made Griffith even more feminine.

A proper RPG shouldn't encourage illogical out-of-character behavior. Carrying everything, robbing everyone, breaking into houses, checking dumpsters - that is NOT how you'd expect a normal human to behave. Yet the game enforces and rewards such behavior. Going into a dungeon and HAVING to choose what to take and what to leave is how it should be. -
The correct way to discuss something is to not assume to much about the other guy and try to grasp what he is saiyng insted of tryign to read between (non-existing) lines. And that is what you are doing. So yes, I find your entire tirede pointless. Reductio Ad Absurdum is bad debating and it is what you were doign by your own admission. So you try to show the folly of my reasoning by stretching it to the extreems (and thus figthing not what I said, but the overblown version of it) - O.K., I get it. It is an relatively effective method otherwise no one would use it...but it still silly and missing the point entirely. Because apparently you never got my point. Of course. I never denied or argued that. Just stating that in many games the power growth really goes out of control. If you think peoples desires/expectations/preferrences have no bearing on the game, then you are delluding yourself. What was your point? If you don't know then I sure as hell can't help you. How the hell do people survive wars anyways? You didnt' say directly. You did imply, as the HP was supposed to be health, defensive skill and luck rolled into one. Or basicly "how difficult you are to kill". Did I understand your point? Honestly I have no idea what your point is trying to be anymore. And I have a sneaky suspicion you didn't understand mine either. That's actually a flawed example. The action (and cammera) is centered on Aragorn, so naturally you get to see how many he killed. The kill-count of other soldiers is not known. Some die wihout killing anyone. Some kill a lot and survive the battle. It's how wars and battles work.
-
And? Like I said before, people survived incredible injuries before - it's well documented. Boromirs last, heroic stand is a great moment. I reject your assertion. I don't have anything to prove to you and I don't have to. It's common knowledge that as games evolved, geres mixed and new mecahnics were introduced, borrowed from other games and so forth. Games changes over time and new game types evolved. So it's obvious that changing element and mixing element can and does work. So you want the exact same thing? I want BG...but IMPROVED. Of course, what constitutes as improvement may not be the same for you and me. And while I agree the new X-Com failed in general to live up to expectations, not every change and mechanic was for the worse. Flops happen. And yet here you are, decreeing from on high that a single change is undeniably bad because...well, because it's not like the old one. That seems to be your only real objection. But still your guidance. It's not complete character skill. And I still fail to see what point you are trying to make here. I guess you think I want to turn PR into Splinter Cell or something based on nothing more than a mechanical comparison I made. While I think FF games suck, I still say you are wrong. I can look for hints and inspiration EVERYWHERE. Nothing is off-limits. Easy. Games already do it and have done it. Start with 100 HP. End the game with 100HP (unless you invested a point in CON or have a magic item) There's your health/life. You're tought at start, tough at end. Your ATT, DEF, DODGE and armor/weapon may change. More inuitive than the HP = everything in one package crap.

I don't recall saying that. And I don't consider FotNS a great and deep anime. Entertaining, yes. But greatness is not a label I give out lightly. It's your thread, only 5 pages long. It's not that hard to look back at page 3. Whatever, it's your can of worms. You get to clean up the mess. Read it again and you will realise that I have never said that explicitly. Altough I see how you came to that conclusion. Not that I regret framing it that way.
