Balancing Stealth vs Combat
TrashMan replied to PrimeJunta's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
TrashMan, I really like your avatar. It's cool. I want to ask you though, if you were playing BG1/BG2 as a Blackguard and making evil or morally questionable choices, how do you think objective only xp would cover that? Easily. Everyone has objectives. It can be something as simple as "survive this battle" (even if you started it). And technicly, if everything you do grants experience, then I see no reason why XP should be granted for KILLING an opponent as opposed to everything else.. How about hitting it? Parrying? Every time you hit = 1XP Everything is a learning experience. -

No, it doesn't NEED to have that. Objective XP covers everything already. -
No. Since when is magic so simple to just up numbers? Well, in some games, maybe. If anything magic gives a lot of options, a lot of utility, without necessarily being overpowered. What I basicly don't want to see if the following: - You start with 100 HP and end up with 10000 HP (bosses have a bajillion HP) - You start with a 10DPS claymore and end up with a 10000 dps dagger and similar...

Indeed it will.

Parties in Cities
TrashMan replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
There are many ways this concept could be done. Each character should have specific goals and varios points of interests on maps. So you get to town and as you walk around, characters might express their desire to split and do stuff. You can go do your own stuff, or tag along with one of them (if possible). The other party memebrs go off on their own and there's a chance that they might trigger some event. They might get back to you later with a story. They might wait for you at a specific place. You mgith bump into them unplanned as they do errand in the town. Ifthey run into (simulated) trouble, you might get a prompt to switch to them and fight. They might get captured. They might bump into an interesting lead they decide to follow (so when they don't show up you get curios and have to find them) tons of possibilities. -

No, ti's not. You just have a very narrow view of the problem. 1) objective-based XP is granted upon completion of an objetive. You don't have to KILL all goblins to get XP. An objective can be something as simple as SURVIVING. 2) The idea that XP has to be awarded a certain way. XP in itself is an abstraction, so going that it "doesn't make sense to not get XP for killing stuff immediately" is easiyl countered by "it doesnt' make sense you get XP to use for anything other than axe swinigng" or any other kind of rationalization anyone else can make. 3) So what? What does the assasin have to actually do with it? If the experience from 5 dead goblins makes that much of a difference, either the game is HORRIBLEYbalanced or you suck. The perception of being duped is that that - your perception. -
This coming from the guy who compared Gurren Lagann to monkeys throwing ****. Why do people like Hokuto no Ken? Because it's silly hyper-violent fun. I don't recall saying that. And I don't consider FotNS a great and deep anime. Entertaining, yes. But greatness is not a label I give out lightly. EDIT: Excel Saga... A classic.

A Spell-free Project Eternity?
TrashMan replied to frgodfrey's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I sense some hostility in this thread. I know religion is a hot topic, but it seems some people can't wait for an opportunity to do a little religion bashing.- 99 replies

Fist of the Northstar..... Let me sum it up
-
That a rather high standard to set. No, I guess it's not. But it is good. Some politicking, some action, some plotting, some deaths. The main character is sympathetic enough and the music is good too.

Anime - an emotional rolercoster?
-
Yup, a mod should change the title. I'm not depressed anymore anyway.

Watched Jin-Roh (The Wolf Brigade). Sad, but I expected it given the tone of the move. Great animation.

Blackguard? Peh, a pox on it. And no, it's not inflexible. Having a specific code, being a part of a order (and thus having to follow the rules) is not "inflexible" when it comes to character. There are multiple orders and there are many, many ways one can RP even a D&D paladin...let alone some other version.

The PE Paladin class lacks hte "soul". The feel. I liked the D&D Paladin precisely BECAUSE it was different. It came with some restrictions. Even DAO templars are closer to the paladin feel than the PE paladin is - who is basicly a warlord/general class. To me, a paladin without an Order and a set of conduct is not a paladin.

Degenerate Gameplay

Actually it doesn't work "just fine". Face it - objective-based XP is simpler to implement, more fair to everyone and easier to balance -

Really? From where I'm standing it looks like the voice of reason (objective XP) is being ignored. -

More like cow-killing. You would punch it till tifalls down...then you'd continue punching till it died. altough I guess you coudl stop and bandage it. Not that it needs bandaging - punches don't cause bleeding. But way to train your medical skill. I guess the biggest gripe some have with Learn-By-Doing is that a guy that wants to max his sneaking skill will sneak around everywhere and level that skill up fast. But I don't really see a big problem with that..if the guy trains and spends so much time on it, what's exactly wrong with it? I guess you can put a cap, so it will only increase to a certain level with regular training, and to increase further you have to sneak around actual enemies (not pesants). Or you can make it that only correct usage grants skill XP (so sneaking near pesants gives you nothing) -

Apparently some people fear that getting rid of kill XP will mean they can't game the system and min-max enough for their tastes. Go figure. Also, quest XP? A more accurate term would be OBJETIVE XP. Quest is tied to much to quest givers and actual contracts. -

Well, he should learn from you. After bashing your head so many times, you learned the value of a HELM. -

Now why do peoele always bring up Elder Scrolls whenever Learn-By-Doing is involved? It's liek there aren't game who did a GREAT LBD system.... Like Jagged Alliance 2. Yes, you can make a unabusable system that works great. It's not that difficult really. In fact, the only real abuse I can think off was punching cows...but since there were only a few cows, it didn't amount to much. -

You actually didn't do a good job of doing that. Sarcasm and ignoring are not valid counter-arguments. All you do is basicly insult the pro-quest XP crowd. Actually, it's your argument that is a bad argument. "X cost resources, and since everything costs resources, that means Y cost resources too?" Well Sherlock, way to be Captain Obvious. the questio nis never weather feature A cost resoruces or not- the question is if it costs more or less. And quest-based XP is by nature simpler to balance, hence requireing LESS resources.
