Still "Shipping soon"?
Elerond replied to Lord_Darkmoon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah it still say shipped soon. It would nice to have some confirmation that they have shipped my stuff if they have already done so. -
I would hope that they will implement system which they spoke during development where in skill checks all members of party that have said skill give you benefits for the check. Like for example you could get +1/4 or maybe +1/6 party members skill to the check (rounded down), to show that they help you or that they have taught you trick or two during your travels. Such system would make party that advances all skill work nearly as good as one with min maxed skills.

Hard mode is too easy.
Elerond replied to Mazisky's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, that happened to me in the last few fights. I didn't even give him Defender Mode, and he's still holding off like 4 enemies at a time while my PC Wizard and Aloth tag-team stuff from afar. MY PC Wizard actually switches to a 1-handed Rapier to help out once the enemies are thinned out a bit (that and I like using as much short-range magic as possible... just my style, 8P). I think maybe a few tuning passes are in order, to make things a bit less swingy? I don't have an issue with party setup A making things easier than party setup B. But, there are some things that seem way easier even on Hard difficulty than they're meant to be. I get things being not uber-hard if you do it right, but... some stuff's been just passively unworrisome (such as 4-5 things clawing at Eder, but don't worry... he's fine for like the next 6 attacks with me not actively making him fine). Really, the only thing that's been HARD hard were the first bears I fought. They pretty much laughed at Eder's armor and Deflection values. Of course, that was at Level 2. *shrug* Edér and my tank Chanter (which I build so that enemies had quite hard time to hit her even in beginning of they without speaking after couple talents and better itemization) held without taking much of damage adra dragon at bay after I had used summons to make her to waste all her breath attacks (which are just ridiculous as its grazes do over 170 damage) Hardest enemies that I have found were actually Ogre druids, but that was because of one of their spell is bugged and it causes permanent raw damage effect to anybody that it even grazes, only way to get rid of it is to switch effected members off your party or let them get maimed (which is not option if you play with instant death option, which means that if your PC is effected by it you need to load). And I find that Crystal Eater spiders can in some cases cause raw damage effects even when they miss their initial attack which in I think should not be the case. -
1) Physical copy sellers take at least 50% (which don't mean that they make more money than steam as there are more costs associated with selling physical copies than there are in selling digital copies) of the price to themselves, which is why many publishers are keen to get people buy digital copies. 2) This is quite inexcusable thing in this days when laser printing any picture, with high DPI to cloth in manufacturing line is reality even cheapest of shops (of course there are exceptions, but there always are), only thing that prevents high quality printing is quality of cloth (how tight its knitting is). I think that reliably low quality of cloth maps with D:OS, Wasteland 2 and now PoE are because of lack of experience with them from those who were tasked to order them. 3) Localization with tight budget is hard, which don't excuse poor quality but it usually explains it, as people will always buy localizations from companies that offer to do localization cheaply but nearly always quality of their job is as half assed as their price indicates. But Paradox have seem to also done well for PoE as it seems that their marketing efforts have worked quite good. Although I am not amused that I paid $30 for shipping and I haven't yet even received confirmation that my copy has been shipped to me or they have informed me why there is delay.

Most of revenue at least, profit depends much of how company uses their money and their other sources of revenue. So it is possible that Paradox makes more profit from PoE even though they get smaller piece of revenue because of their larger overall revenue, although at end that is just accounting game that has real meaning only those who get part of company's profits.

Resolve (opens options to persuade people, this don't necessary lead better results but you can get people do as you want), Intellect (gives you options to reason with people, these options also don't necessary lead better result but you are able to be maybe bit more diplomatic) and Perception (this opens options to spot lies, behaviors etc. also these options don't necessary lead better results but you are able to be very perceptive person) open most new conversation options, although DEX opens options to steal stuff or do other bit sneaky actions, which are in some cases nice and might opens options to intimidate people. For CON I don't think I saw even one conversation option during my first play through, but that maybe because I was very diplomatic mass murdered. So yes your dialog choices are restricted in case of any attribute, except possible CON, that you don't boost. Although you can rise attribute 6-9 points with itemization, consumables, and rest bonuses (+ brothel bonuses for main character). So if you have meta knowledge about conversations then you have possibility to boost right attribute before you go in that conversation. Also you can build rogue that does decent damage around RES, INT, and PER if you want. Could you elaborate on that? What does not work? How should it work? Is it only that it doesn't break the engagement? I'm feeling i got smacked a lot even before "escaping". My main character is an assassin-like rogue and feels more like a kamikaze fighter than an actual assassin. I'm basically just cannon fodder. Escape has bug that enemies get to make, at least sometimes, disengagement attacks against rogue even though ability should prevent that. I would support assassin rogue with Paladin (Zealous Charge), Chanter (The Fox from the Farmer Did Run and Leap, Blessed Was Wengridh, Quickest of His Tribe), or Priest (Blessing, Armor of Faith).

Anyone find a unique arquebus?
Elerond replied to Kingsy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
They usually also have enchantments that you can't do yourself. Those unique items that have unique icons are usually have most unique enchantments, which of course don't mean that they are good. -
In Baldur's Gate your wizard is usually dead if they get hit by anybody or anything when they are in 1-2 level. So my suggestion is start to use those tactics that kept your wizards alive in BG also in PoE.

"Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment. Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system - positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you'll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out." These were first words that Obsidian used to describe what they have in mind for the game in their Kickstarter.

There is one example of one of my rogue builds in beta, although Escape ability don't work currently as intended so it you could think to replace it, but in other hand patch that fixes it should come out this week. http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/71543-wtb-rogue-suggestionsadvice/page-2?do=findComment&comment=1599110 You can also do bit more defensive stat line by dropping constitution and intellect to boost your perception even more and possible to put some points in resolve. For dual wielding rouge or supper accurate single weapon (dagger, rapier, and spear are excellent choices for this because of their accuracy bonus), build you should switch might and dexterity. Also you should look bit different talents and abilities and races. Main points for melee rogue You need some defensive abilities if you don't want to get knock outed often. Intellect don't matter as much as it does for ranged rogue builds as you don't usually really on your own status effects to get sneak attacks but instead of you focus in flanking enemies and hitting enemies that are inflected by status effects from your other party members spells and abilities. Slower weapons (two handed weapons) benefit more from dex than might. Fast weapons benefit more from might than dex. Itemization is king. Athletics or/and survival are important skills, as you they give you ability to benefit from temporal bonuses longer (rest, night of pleasure, food) which aren't insignificant in this game (although they also aren't necessity, but they make life easier).

Very bad stealth mechanics..
Elerond replied to Valaden's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
on the other hand, the current mechanic makes stealth usefulness rather suspect. we were hoping, beyond hope, that obsidian would implement the stealth fix (or fixes) they had referenced before the game were released. will stealth get a fix with a patch? do we need wait for an expansion? at this point, the expansion would appear more likely. we get very little value from stealth. any character can scout. stealth adds a slight increase in how close one may approach foes w/o detection, which is only useful for setting traps and would be valuable if we could position the stealth character appropriately before battles. have party stealth drop makes our scout a proverbial sitting duck for the cf mobs that is ubiquitous in hard mode. at the moment, in Gromnir's experience, stealth is the least useful poe skill. HA! Good Fun! I think that they mentioned that they plan to rework stealth system for expansion, but it is unlikely that new version will be delivered with patch. Currently most usefulness from stealth ability comes from that it lets me steal valuable loot even places where there are close by npcs. But as you can do most before combat positioning even with stealth 0, I don't necessary find it that useful combat skill, with exception of backstabbing rogue. -
Pillars of Transphobia? Obsidian in trouble for an in-game joke
Elerond replied to Chaz's topic in Obsidian General
It matters when you say that it is part of official version of world of PoE, which it isn't actually as it is just fan made additional content. If we took this as part of official version of world of PoE then we should also count those lesbian romances, stories of lonely PC (as computer) users and etc. content that you can find within backer supplemented content as part of official version of world of PoE. It's in the game so I consider it a part of the game world. Obsidian included those memorials and NPC's so they made them a part of the game world no matter how subpar those content are. Still having those in the game doesn't mean that the game or the creators views are consistent with this content. I would argue that is not the case even if it is superior to content that Obsidian produces, but that it is content that they don't see as part of game world, but instead of content that breaches forth wall to give homage to their backers. It may or may not align with views of content creator, only thing that really matters is do content portray such view that is consistent of vision that Obsidian wants their game to portray about them and about game itself to people that play it. If they feel that game don't portray message that they want it do, then they probably should edit it.- 7 replies

Memorials problem.
Elerond replied to Ladyjess's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Memorials aren't content that Obsidian produced themselves, but content that was produced backers on backer tiers $500+. I think that part of Obsidian's instructions for memorials was that they should not have foul language, slurs or otherwise offensive content. In this particular case, I would say that Obsidian should remove or edit message if they find it to be offensive (people's opinions, including mine, on how offensive or inoffensive memorial is shouldn't carry much of weight in this decision), as it is their game and it would be quite unfair for one backer get special privileges that others with same reward didn't get. In general I don't like see content, even offensive, removed from game or any other piece of art, but creator(s) of should always have right to edit their work if they find that something don't produce image that they wanted. -
Itemization, consumables and rest (+ night pleasure for main character) bonuses are the key to any successful build. Starting attribute values play quite minor role in character's combat efficiency and most part in my experience one should probably focus on their character's roleplay aspects when they select them if they don't necessary want to try do min/max build. What I have seen Perception and Resolve are probably most important stats to open new conversation options and get additional information about game world and its characters (which probably is not that surprising in Obsidian's RPG). Con/Per/Res are fully defensive attributes that in my opinion work fine (although they differ from three other attributes that give both defensive and aggressive bonuses). Interesting note if you do full tank build you usually don't need con as they don't take that much damage as enemies (and your own aoe's) will mostly miss or graze them. Con is actually useful stat for front line damage dealing builds as you need to sacrifice some of that defensive abilities that tanks have to make them efficient damage dealers.

The blandness of this RPG system

Why do camp sites disappear?
Elerond replied to CameraLuv's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
To me it feels that there is infinity resting in the game already. As you can find from every longer dungeon 1-4 camping supplies and I constantly need to leave them behind as my supply limit is full. And even worst case I have had to use only 3 rest supplies to clear dungeon (Temple in Gilded Vale with Aloth, Edér and hired adventurer), currently I am Defiance Bay in act 2 (so quite beginning still). And I am playing on hard difficulty. If you feel that you need to rest more and fights eat too much your resources you probably should test easier difficulty level (if you aren't already playing on easy), as there is no shame to learn new rule set in easy difficulty, especially in game that is designed to be challenging. But I would not for first thing that I do go and remove one of those factors that make game bit more challenging. But that is just me in these days. -

Elerond replied to WDeranged's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It seems that some where in their copy paste process, non-ascii character in your name has changed to numeric character reference of it. And nobody has noticed it as they have used automated system which results nobody has probably checked thoroughly. You have my sympathies. -
