Kits and pretige classes are nonsense. "I would rather call myself a Kensai than a Fighter". Kensai's are fighters, they are just fighters who specialize in using Katana's historically speaking. Fighter is not a profession or job title, it is a general description of what you do. A fighter could be a Gladiator who mastered the trident and is always in pit fights. A fighter could be a Longbowman in the king's army. A fighter could be a Bounty Hunter. The only real difference between these characters is motivation and the choices they made when it came to what skills and weapons to learn. They are separate professions yes, but they aren't separate "ideologies" or skill sets for lack of a better word. And that's what classes should be, an overall skill set and method of approach, not an actual job or character description. No one should just call themselves a "Fighter".

I play these games for fun and to enjoy the story/lore of the world so likely I will play at normal most of the time if not only normal. I will never turn on trial of iron because it does nothing to enhance what I play the game for. Expert mode I might do at some point. Settings wise I always go through and tweak those in every game.

My biggest dream is that I get the chance to have a character who isn't A: a foregone conclusion, meaning you are playing Aedric the Bounty Hunter! or B: nothing but a blank slate. I love me some Commander Shepard and Solid Snake etc etc.... and I can really enjoy a blank slate game like Skyrim or Baldur's Gate. It can be done better though. Dragon Age Origins was a step in the right direction it just didn't take it far enough. There were even a few hidden endings in that game that were locked out based on choices you made in game and the origin you started with. Make the fact that I am a human from country X matter to the story, even if it means my racial selections are limited. Let me specify my characters background as a student at a prestigious college or a revenge crazed monster hunter, and make it matter to the story, again, even if it means my background selections are limited. Lock endings, factions, entire minor plot elements out because I choose to be an elf, it is okay, if I love your game I will play it again. You guys get the idea. My fears? Baldur's Gate 3. An old, clunky, poorly designed rehash that only looks "great" if you have rose colored glasses on first. Non tactical combat, and or, repetitive combat. Obviously not all fights will be unique. But this isn't an mmo, I don't want to see tanking or other tired trinity mechanics. Make me fight those trolls in the canyon that ambush me by rolling boulders down the hill. Make me fight the invisible stalkers in a dark cave. Etc etc. Mix it up and make me use tactics and the environment to win. Tactical doesn't mean ball bustingly hard. There is nothing tactical about an iron man mode where every enemy gets +50% bonus damage and 100% health boost. It is cheap and it's lame. Also when you use good tactics, have a well made party, and are prepared for the fight.... you shouldn't be in constant near death fights unless you are fighting enemies far stronger than you that you should be avoiding. Fun and challenging does not equal every fight is a potential game ender.

Every class should have "specializations" but that doesn't mean stupid extra class name or multi classing. Two level 20 fighters in PE should not be the same fighter, you should have options for stats, different abilities you can acquire, combat styles, skills that have out of and in combat purposes, maybe even passive bonus perks. Every class should have enough depth to it that you can build them to be unique and effective at what you want them for. Like a mage who is good at controlling, or one who is pure massive damage. Or a rogue who is king at killing one enemy but another who actually specializes in ranged fighting with status effects. That's all the game needs.

My favorite alignments to play are Neutral Good because it lets me be a good guy without having to consider BS like "But I promised this person...." etc etc. Neutral Evil for the same reason as Neutral Good. Lawful Evil because it is an interesting role play opportunity and allows for some really neat situations and actions. But my all time favorite alignment to play is truly possibly most morally repugnant and potentially evil alignment of all time, Lawful Neutral. They are just fun, great character to play. They can go from being kind and generous to ruthlessly cut throat and brutal at a moments notice. They have a code, they aren't necessarily morally bankrupt, and they aren't really out for number one characters per se. They just have tons of flexibility and room without being completely without depth unlike Chaotic Neutral. I just love playing Lawful Neutral.

True but I will point out one thing. Baldur's Gate, like all infinity engine games, is based on D&D rules. D&D had no rules for durability, your sword was either broken, or it wasn't. Also like you said, only non magic weapons could break. Meanwhile in D&D stock rules.... magic weapons can't break by normal means either. They were just following stock D&D. Durability when done correctly isn't a chore, and now weapon crafting is just nonsensical. Why can I craft a bad ass adamantite suit of plate? I am not a trained smith, I haven't practiced, are you telling me any idiot with a instruction manual, some ore, and a forge can just make whatever? If you just can't handle durability for some reason, whatever, but crafting should not have been taken out as a skill.
-
Wow this is kinda stupid. Baldur's gate had durability, it was just cheap as hell. Or did me having to replace my longsword 5 times until I found "Varscona" just happen in my mind? There are some things to get upset over... this was not one of them. The skill choices will be less interesting as a result of this and one more element that when done right can offer a level of tension to the game is taken out... well... I don't mind modern game conventions. I do mind seeing the game dumbed down just because people either don't like crafting or are too lazy to repair gear every once in awhile.

Item Durability
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Only you don't invest in crafting for the perks it gives you to your repairing skills, you invest in it for the ability to make items associated with the craft. It will still be plenty rewarding.- 176 replies

Item Durability
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Why is this a poll? It is in the game, no point debating it now. Durability is fine as long as it is not too punishing. If I can't play the game for more than an hour without a repair they need to adjust it. If I can clear two dungeons and still be over 75% it is too lenient.- 176 replies

Actually in the second episode of the show he stops a guy from attacking him by biting their sword, literally. He also lost an arm because a monster was biting it and he decided chopping it off to free him so he could attack someone else was more important than keeping his arm. I am pretty sure he qualifies.
-
Exactly. This just means you can be more ... aggressive with the barbarian and put them in situations that would be dangerous for other characters. In other words... they can afford to stand in the center of five guys and take hits because they take less wounds but can kill the 5 fast enough to not be overwhelmed.

I would say eternity is easily the best. Wasteland updates are almost non existent, and when they arrive they are normally pretty meh. Shadowrun looks fine, I don't remember them promising the moon and stars, just a good shadowrun inspired game and that appears to be what we are getting. They seem to have stayed in budget, and are behind schedule but not dangerously so.

Potion Overdose and PotSpam
Karkarov replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
What is the point in spamming a stamina potion? Assuming you didn't die it automatically regens when combat is over. A strength potion isn't going to work multiple times, why drink two? A status effect removing potion only needs to be taken once to remove the effect, why did you take it twice other than to remove the effect again? Potion spamming only happens when you have a resource that needs to be regenerated. You can't regen wounds other than resting and stamina already regens through ability use and automatically comes back when combat ends. Heck fighters even get passive stamina regen. This game has very little reason to "spam" potions. Like all other degenerative gameplay elements it is not a problem in itself, potion spamming is a sign of bad design. P:E doesn't appear to suffer from many design mistakes so far. -
Actually compared to his later feats what he does in that battle is almost nothing. That character is however not a barbarian in the least, a "berserker" (harharhar) maybe, but not a barbarian. His name is Gut's because his japanese name basically translates for meaning to be like uh... "willpower". Also he is most certainly not a model, at the current point in his ongoing story he is short a hand, an eye, has more scars than Solid Snake, and his hair is going white.
-
Uh you were trying to clear your name, find out why the killings were happening at all, and save Triss.... just saying. I killed the Kingslayer for making me go through all the trouble ;p. That being said a lot of Witcher 2 relied on you knowing who Geralt was, maybe playing Witcher 1, and possibly having read a book or two. Without all that it did fall a little flat.

Potion Overdose and PotSpam
Karkarov replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Quoted for truth. This is a non issue. There are no healing potions, it is literally impossible to "potspam" in P:E. -
Fighters need something to make them stand out, I see no problem with it especially when you consider that we don't know anywhere near enough about the mechanics to be going rules lawyer mode and making judgements. Meanwhile... Sigh... *plays broken record* This isn't Dungeon's and Dragons, stop making D&D based comparisons. They have no merit and there is no reason to assume just because D&D did it P:E will too.

I have no major complaints from the direction they have gone with the game so far other than that it includes elves and dwarves ;p. I expected a real time with pause strategy RPG based on small team play, an original and new rich lore filled world, deep and interesting character creation and development, and a excellent high quality narrative. I am pretty sure they are going to deliver on what I expect. Will there be things I don't like ultimately? Yes. That is just how the world works. Will I like the total package though? More than likely I will. When, or if, they kickstart BG 3 will I be there? Nope.

Why 9 Charakters only?
Karkarov replied to Muschas1's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
9 will be okay. I would have liked more myself but like losts of other posters are saying it comes down to a cost and quality issue. Sawyer actually had a post somewhere on the forums specifically about how they did not like the way BG's had companions when they looked back at it because there were a ton of them.... but many were one dimensional and not that interesting. They wanted all the PE characters to be capable of standing as great characters on their own and none of them to feel tacked on or boring. -
Godlike subraces ?!
Karkarov replied to Ulquiorra's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Methinks you might've missed le following, from Update #43: You make a good argument, but don't forget that in PE there are factions that actually debate if the gods are gods at all and they pretty much take no direct hand in anything. It is possible what the layman of the Dyrwood calls a "god" is just a really powerful spiritual being. We shall see! -
Purple/Pink in P:E setting
Karkarov replied to Chilloutman's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That was a great fight. That game is criminally under rated.
