in 3,5 ed you had a guy called Eldrich Knight, and you could have also used still spell feat. There has to be a trade-off... you cannot be good at fighting in full armor and casting magic... A good thing here would be simply str restrictions on armors... if you want to wear it, you need to have high enough str... if you commit str to your wizard, then go ahead and wear that full plate armor. Why have a trade off? I mean explain to me why as a magic wielding warrior type of class, they can't have their OWN skill tree's and thing sdesigned around that class? i'm not asking for a normal range-based mage nuker class wearing armor, I'm asking for a kick ass melee fighter who can use armor/weapons and magic. I do not get why I should be penalized for wanting a class like that instead of generic cliche "pointy hat mage" or "nonmagic using armor wearing melee fighter." which is what most rpgs stick you with. It makes no sense as a class (or skill system) that developers can't design around this. It has worked fine in some games (Dragon age arcane warrior, D&D style cleric also comes to mind as a decent fitgher/armor user with some magic).

They could implement weather affecting certain elements as well, to give it more gameplay implications. If anyone here played the excellent "Myth" RTS games from bungie. The rain and snow both played a role in the combat of the game (as well as bodies of water, IE creeks/rivers/lakes). Things such as flaming arrows, bombs , water/snow had a chance to put out. Certain bodies of waters only specific units could cross if it was deep (IE the undead), Also wind could play a factor if they wanted to get into more details. This was all done back in the mid-late 90's also, so it's nothing "new" or too far ahead of it's time. (Myth was actually one of the first games to use physics as well, for all the body parts/blood on battlefields, which didn't disappear and actually rolled down hills and things).

I find that even though it really is more of a cosmetic thing, having weather that changes throughout the game randomly (IE not scripted) can really help add to the feeling of variety and dynamic nature of playing the game. Especially if you have to back-track and go through area's you've been before. That dynamic nature of running into a thunderstorm, snow, etc makes it feel different. Furthermore a cool thing I'd love to see is that the world has it's own "unique" weather, since it's not earth or anything it would be nice to see the dev's let their creative freedom go and think of weather that we don't get on earth but could exist on their fictional world. Even a simple thunderstorm could look different. I mean think of how weather on Jupiter is compared to earth, it has thunderstorms but the storms are quite larger then earth's and visually different. Another major aspect that would help this is seasons. This is something that games usually ignore, a few have tried it (Asherons call comes to mind) and the upcoming Assassin's creed has a season system. Personally I'd love it, but I understand if it could take too much resources to do and instead the dev's would want to focus on other game aspects

I'd like to see some greek inspired races that are usually treated as "creatures/bad guys" in most rpgs and never a playable race. Centaurs, Minotaur, Satyr, etc. Apart from that I wouldn't mind seeing a more beast like race, something more like a werewolf (but not one that turns into a human or vice versa, always a "werewolf" Perhaps a race that they just make up on their own. It'd just be nice if it wasn't a humanoid (IE two legs, two eyes, nose/mouth, etc).

I'm REALLY hoping in this game we aren't restricted what we can wear because we are a "mage." That's so cliche and the only point to it is that it restricts player choice. I hate wearing cloth armor, I always like wearing plate and such. Really like to play a hybrid magic/melee fighter, but that's a class that usually isnt' in rpgs aside from a "paladin" buffbot. I want a dps based arcane warrior type of class that can use magic and wear armor.

You know what I'd like to see out of a villain in this game? A villain you DON'T hate. Someone who you may be against, but he has his reasons for doing what he's doing and isn't a totally unlikable "HAH I'm EVILLLL!1!!1" person rather you can identify with and understand where they are coming from/why they think what they are doing is "right/good." I want a villain that will make people think, not one that is just a stereotype.

Fighting against plate armor I'd much rather use a pole axe then a sword. Though there were sword designed for plate armor (IE an estoc) and techniques like the above mentioned half-swording, i'd still think it would be much easier/simpler for a pole axe to take out someone in plate armor. The speed and force of the hit against armor while it might not penetrate it it will still do damage, could crush the armor or lead to concussions/knockouts and things. Speaking of historical combat, I haven't ever really found a game to portray melee combat well at all, or movies for that matter. People have it in their head that when fighting with melee weapons you have this classic Errol Flynn style sword fights, with two guys swinging their swords and blocking with their blades (You would actually want to block a hit with the width of a blade, not the edge). In real melee combat hroughout history, especially in the later middle ages it was so much more complicated. There were a lot of techniques to fighting, and a LOT of them involved grappling. Grappling is something you hardly ever see, but in combat if you can get the other guy down, disarm him, then slide your sword into his visor slit, arm pit, neck, or groin area it's a win. Trips, pulls, throws, all of these things were a huge part of melee fighting, yet in most games/movies they never show a single one, just two guys standing there, swinging their swords and hitting the blades together until one stabs the other. I'd love to see a game that portrays melee combat with more depth and variety, lets your characters actually use grapples, disarms, trips, and other parts of melee combat.

Finishing Moves
Stiler replied to Boretti's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think it'd be nice. The way it was done in DA:O worked well. Certain % chance on normal enemies and then for big bosses if you got the killing blow. However expanding on that I think it'd be nice if it was also dependent on the type of attack you use/weapon and skill. A mage using fire spells shouldn't have the same killing move as a mage using ice or something. For normal enemies the animations should be fairly quick, but noticable. For the "boss" enemies I wouldn't mind a close up camera/some slow mo (since there's no danger while doing it). It adds visual flavor to the combat and gives some variety. Don't see why people wouldn't want it. -
Kick it forward support?
Stiler replied to Dalliance5's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think they should, it's their choice but to me it's a good idea. It's giving back to kickstarter, the community that helped them to raise the funds for the game and make it in the first place. It's a way to give back for those people that have successful kickstarters and help out projects that might not make it or they want to help out. Some of you don't seem to understand it's not taking money away from the kickstarter of PE, it's only something done after the release of the game, when they see profits coming in. It's not a huge amount of money either. -
Your opinion on mounts?
Stiler replied to hideo kuze's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I would like to at least see mounts in the world. See peopel riding them on roads, have them stabled in front of taverns and what not. PErhaps even have story elements where you ride them (but don't do combat), just where it makes sense and adds to the fact that mounts exist in the world and are a part of it. Doing combat from mounts would be the hard part. Since it's an isometeirc party-based game I think it would be a bit wonky myself. A few isometeric style games have done combat ok (IE Sacred games) but they were more hack and slash style not really tactical combat. -
On one hand I liked it back in soem of these games that used it well. On the other hand time has passed, we have moved on and many rpgs have moved to using cinematics. In modern games when they use them it's usually for a budget reason. Honestly I prefer cinematics over still frames/narrations and things. If they do go the narration point of view they really really need to get a good voice actor for it. Someone like the guy who voices Bastion, or Richard Ridings (the guy who was the voice in Dungeon Keeper, who's also a great actor as well).

Speaking of drawing influences from other cultures/times. I would REALLY like to see a few Native American inspired weapons and things in the game. I mean it could fit quite well imo. One thing I'd love is a gunstock warclub, similar to the one they had in the Last of the Mohicans (love that movie, one of my fav's) that Chingachgook uses, For reference here is the scene in the film where he uses it (If you ha ven't watched Last of the Mohicans this is a MAJOR spoiler) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zJLfojG3BU Picture here if you don't wanna spoil the film: http://en.wikipedia....nstock_war_club Also would like to see Tomahawks and knifes used less like thieves use them in rpgs and more like up close weapons.

One thing that is missing from games is just how personal armor/weapons should be. I would LOVE to see PE take the idea forward. Allow players to customize their armor and weapons in various ways rather then either not at all or simply having a "dye" system. If you ever look at some historical knight armor it looks quite good. They could have very ornate designs. The armor could be etched, engraved, embossed, gilded, painted on (there are many pieces of armor found with various painted designs, from crests/symbols and things, it's a common misconception that plate armor was all "silver and clean" or that they didn't paint armor. Armor itself could be in various colors through different means, heat-patination was one such way, depending on how you heated the armor and when you stopped you could have it turn out to be a blue'ish color and others, it took skill for this though. There were also ways to have armor be black as well as golden, etc. You had various types of armor, battle armor, jousting armor, and ceremonial armor (usually very very ornate and not practical for battle). Here are a few pics of historical plate armor from museums: http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-35823457/stock-photo-french-king-s-armor-in-historical-museum.html http://www.skiptonweb.co.uk/gallery/picture.asp?id=2980 http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/14.25.716 http://gonewengland.about.com/library/blarmor3.htm (this is jousting armor, if you notice it has shoulder protection on one side to protect from hits) It just seems many people that use plate armor for entertainment (IE movies/games) don't realize just how amazing it could be and have a wrong picture of it in their heads from seeing films and things. One thing I haaaaaaaaate about armor in most games is the oversized pauldrons with giant spikes on them or the helmets. Putting spikes on ANY piece of armor is just a bad idea, you're asking to have a weapon or hand grab it. There's a reason that as armor evolved they used curves and various techniques to make blows and things glance off it, last thing you want is something to catch on it or to allow someone a good hand hold. I understand it's a fantasy rpg, but I'd like to see a game that treats armor more personal and allows players to decorate it in a more realistic fashion (which looks great imo).

There is a lake called 'lake of drow tombs'. so drow might be in If they are in, I hope they do not coun't as seperate race from elves in race selection or else that is another slot taken up by another oldie fantasy race. Actually that lake is "Lake of drowned tombs" it was posted on twitter that was the name, it was just shortened.

Cloaks and Capes
Stiler replied to MrGeekyGamer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm still amazed at how many games simply ignore cloaks/capes/tabbards or don't fully do them justice. Soooooooo many people wanted them in Skyrim , with proper cloth physics (which can be done easily in this day and age, see Batman: AA/AC) yet we didn't even get them there. Cloaks/Capes/Tabbards were a VERY common clothing item throughout history, a staple clothing item in many great literary works, movies, etc yet in games they just get ignored or get halfway done. I'd love to see all kinds of cloaks/capes/tabbards (these are not all the same thing, a tabbard is cloth worn over armor usually with a heraldic symbol on it or such) . From full cloaks (hood up or down), to half cloaks (Comes down only to your knee's) to capes (no hood, draped around your neck going down your back). If they do them I really really hope they use phyiscs on them. A cape doesn't look/work nearly as well if it's just a rigged piece of clothing with no physics and bends like it's glued to your character model. Batman should be an example of using physics for good capes.- 23 replies

This is pretty much standard stuff... you will certainly see some of this in the game. What rpgs allow you to actually play as those though? Most rpgs with those creatures (minotaurs, werewolves/vampires, Satyr's, sirens, cyclops, harpies, etc) they are merely "Wild creatures" you fight against. You hardly are ever given a chance as actually playing as one. Heck look at werewolves, A few games offer the chance to play as one "a bit" (IE Skyrim/Morrowind) but none are really fleshed out that well or a full experience. At least for vampires we had the great V:TMB game, but werewolf fans have not really had any well thought out rpg like game to play as one.

Mature Themes?
Stiler replied to pseudonymous's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I thought the Witcher 2 handled the whole sex/nudity fine, it didn't feel like Bioware's style of "PG-13 can't show anything" cheap romance. It fit the character of Geralt and the game, didn't come off as tasteless or unfitting (like the whole card aspect did in The Witcher 1). I'm hoping that mature relates not just to being able to show nudity (where it makes sense/is present, in both romance options but also in the game world-art, statues/paintings you might come across, heck look at a lot of greek art and many famous sculptures, they contain nudity) but also to the types of dialogue and encounters you come across in the game. Mature themes in terms of such things can add to the game. -
Hello, thoughout the years there have been many rpgs, some that have leaned to skill based systems and some that follow a more traditional class based focus (IE most D&D based crpgs). Personally, I prefer skill based over class based. Mainly for it's openess and ability to really "create" your own character style. The best skill based systems let you basicalyl make your own class an dplay exactly how you want. Do you want to be a greatsword weilding/plate armored melee fighter who has magic abilities? Go ahead, You want to play a magic user who can stealth and do a little backstabbing? Be my guest. With class based systems many times you get "pigeon" holed into a specific focused area, mages are range dps or healers, warriors use armor/weapons and no magic. Some of them offer a few "hybrid" classes but many don't. I always want to play a kind of magic based warrior in rpgs, not a "paladin" (Ie focus on healing/group buffs, etc) but a dps focus warrior who uses awesome magic abilities, rather to enhance my combat or damaging spells that "fit" with that type of person. However in almost any class based game you are never given such a type of character. You either choose a mage and wear only light "cloth" and use a staff from range or choose a warrior and wear heavy armor/use weapons with 0 magic. I hope whichever route Eternity goes they offer players a more open/hybrid style of choice and let us make our own style of character and the abilitie sthey have. The recent Kingdoms of Amalur was good at this, allowing you to basically mix/match anything you wanted, magic and melee, range and magic, anything, and it also rewarded you for doing just about any combination, from jack of all trades to spellswords and other routes.

Agreed. Why can humans have many nations of diverse cultures and such, yet elves and dwarves always have a single kingdom/nation etc. Bring on the clan of Dwarf sailors. If they don't go for non-traditional fantasy races I do hope they at least do this. Where dwarves aren't all "drunken berserk warriors who know how to blacksmith and have great strength" and elves aren't "the magical race/hippies." The Witcher I/II was good at this, even though they had elves/dwarves they didn't have the world/characters be stereotypical. Elves/dwarves were seen as second-class citiziens and treated badly by many characters and created a whole different atmosphere about those characters and how you felt for them then your usual elves/dwarves in a fantasy rpg. All in All though I'd still prefer to see a break from the races all together and let new ones in.

[Merged] DRM Discussion Thread
Stiler replied to Arundor's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Gog would definitely be a good place to sell the game. They already have Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape and many other good old games (zing!). Also would appease the no-drm crowd on top of that. -
Hello, really looking forward to this game. However one thing about "fantasy" rpgs that has always boggled my mind a bit. With this being a new IP game and Obsidian being able to basically do whatever they please with the game and not having to stick with any specific thing in regards to a set IP, it would be nice if we could see something a bit more out of hte box/different then your usual fantasy races of "Elves/Dwarves/Humans/Orcs, etc" There are sooooooo many other races that are ripe for filling out a "Fantasy" world, from pulling idea's from Greek/Roman mythology, folklore, etc. Things like Minotaurs, Satyr, Centaurs, Lycans, Vampires (no not the sparkly kind, but VTM:B style), Cyclops, Sirens, on and on. Then they could even make up their own special unique races for the game, anything you can think of. Look at the recent Guild Wars 2, the Sylvari are one of the most fleshed out races in a recent game in terms of look/feel, sure "plant people" aren't a new thing but how well they incorprated the "plant" look is (every part of their antatomy is plant based). You can see a video of the Sylvari race creation here: I just think it'd be nice/a breath of fresh air if this new rpg had a more robust/open choice of races to play as. It's gotten a bit stale always playing the same fantasy races in rpgs over and over. I'd just like something a bit different to play as in the game world, and it would certainly help the game stand out from other fantasy rpgs that stick to the Tolkien style of fantasy. Regardless I do still have high hopes for the game. Loved BG/Planescape and have missed those party based IP's. Dragon Age: Origins was a goo dthrow back game but DAII was an entirely different story, so I hope this game will fill that gap.
