  2. Offtopic: Roleplayer wasn't banned here. He's just away.
  3. That's like saying Apocalypse Now needed less war, or Love Story needed less love, or Aliens needed fewer aliens.
  4. I'd guess he is a lurker. Because this is Way Off Topic, you doofus.
  5. No, there has NEVER been an incident where a "faithless elector" has changed an election, and in all of US history only 150 some odd times has an elector not voted as pledged (the electors are pledged to vote for the state winner). More than half of those were the result of a VP candidate dying before taking office, the rest involved Martin Van Buren and Civil War politics and was addressed by the passage of the 14th Amendment (among other things). In most states (GA, WY, AK, come to mind) the electors are required by law to vote as pledged. In some (like Michigan) the state has to power to override the vote of a faithless elector. The Constitution orders the states to appoint a number of electors equal to the number of Congressional Reps in such a way as the state may direct. All 50 states and 4 voting territories select electors from the political party whose candidate won the election. These are not a group of political elites, the are all Republicans or Democrats depending on who won. Everyone stamps their feet and makes a stink about how undemocratic the EC is but that is hardly the case and it exists for a very good reason. Furthermore it is provided for by the Constitution so to get rid of it would require the amendment process. That means asking the smaller states to vote against the constitutional provision that protects them from the populous states. It simply will not happen. I wasn't saying that a faithless elector had ever gotten the wrong person elected, just that some electors have voted against their their state's legislature. There's a list on Wikipedia with all of the faithless electors, I think. Anyway, whet the Electoral College does is to give more voting "power" to some individuals that live in less populous states, so I don't see how you can argue that the EC isn't undemocratic. Of course, as you say, the EC won't be removed, ever.

  8. Of course. It's not like the Electoral College makes there decisions in any way based on a state's popular vote. I believe there have been some instances where the Electoral College made their choices against the respective state's popular vote. And, anyway, the Electoral College just adds an extra layer of bureaucracy while making the whole election process less democratic.
  9. I wouldn't say it was as much a cause but rather that it was built to fit the mood and ideas of that time. Augustinian philosophy was really gloomy, depressing stuff. He was like an emo.
  10. Some random things: The prospering cultures of the Islamic world was repelled and partially destroyed for reasons of 'Christianization'. The crusades cost dearly on any party it touched. Most forms of scientific progress was stifled for being blasphemous, and monasteries held a de facto monopoly on any form of education. Thus, knowledge of previous times/cultures/religions was deliberately lost. The conflict between secular and ecclesical forces and the conflicts inside the church wasted ressources, especially in times when they were scarce already. etc. When all those things happened the Middle Ages were already well under way. Unless you can equate Christianity's rise with the fall of the Roman Empire, and the destruction and disappearance of Roman infrastructure, I don't see how you can say Christianity brought about the Middle Ages.
  11. Europe was in the middle ages because of Christianity. I'd like to hear you explain this one.
  12. I think the world and the US would be better off if the US just minded their own business and not interfere with the affairs of other countries. I was talking about Christianity. No Christianity would mean no U.S.
  13. I'm very surprised that some of the Americans on this board think the world would be a better place without the U.S.
  14. Baawww butthurt That stand has no intellectual basis and you should be shamed just for saying that Enlighten me then, if christianity has been so great for europe tell me one benefit its given to europe! I can think of none. So go on then! Culturally speaking, Europe survived the Middle Ages because of Christianity, and if not for the Christian work ethic, European values wouldn't have conquered the world. Basically, Europe wouldn't be Europe if not for Christianity. Oh, and Great Britain is definitely a mongrel nation, just like about every single European nation.

  23. I remember there was a Stargate episode with a plot similar to Groundhog Day. That was fun.
  24. It's just that the things you criticized about RA2 are also present in RA1. I mean as fun as RA1 was, it was a very silly game.In fact, I'd say the reason RA2 was like you described, was that the devs were basically following RA1's formula.
  25. Are you kidding?
