It's very, very addictive, quite funny in a weird way, repetitive, a bit unbalanced and overly linear. Play as a mage. Armored Princess is much better and equally addictive.

The problem with voiced protagonists in RPGs is mainly one of resources. Voice work costs money, and if you decided to voice the PC, the tendency will be automatically to limit the different dialogue options and to shorten each response. Imagine if Fallout had a fully voiced prtagonist, for example.

I wouldn't say obsolete, but 4 did introduce certain benefits I can't live without, nowadays. Even if I spent more time with Civ 1 than with any other Civ. Still, there are a lot more game design differences between each Civ game than between Painkiller and Doom. Mainly because Painkiller and Doom's systems are much, much simpler.

I have played both. I finished Doom, even. They are not completely different experiences. Completely different experiences would be, say, Myst and Civilization. Other than for nostalgia's sake, I'll probably never play Doom again.
