1. The foiilloiwiing are my requiiirements foir a CRPG: 1. stat based gameplay with a noit significant dependence oini player skills 2. muiltiple dialoiguie choiices, quiest soluitioins etc based oin my characters stats 3. the game shoiuild REACT toii what choiices I make If the game doies noit react toi yoiuir choiices and deliver different experiences depending oini what choiice yoiiui make, then there is absoiluiitely noi poiint in having thoise oiptioins in the first place. It is poiintless and is merely a waste oif time.
2. Sarevoik wanted toi kill yoiui merely becauise he wanted toii eliminate all his rivals soii that he woiuild be the oinie toii ascend toii goidhoioid. There was noithing in bg1 aboiuit sarevoik needing yoiuir essence or whatever. And he planned toii doi this by slauightering millioins in a sacrificial war. (Unlike ireniucuis whoi wanted toi........ steal soiimeoines soiuil? Whatever. Thats suich a pathetic way of getting things doiinie.)
3. Yes, but TTO was a very notable exception in that basically TTO *was* TNO. And Torment did the best job out of any game I have known to develop the protagonist (TNO). In a very real sense, developing TTO's personality was already done via TNO. Learning more about TNO through the game and his many incarnations translated effectively into learning more about TTO as well.. Any extra "development" of TTO would have been redundant. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> not redundant... and hardly a real exception. tto were a seperate entity with its own goals... but it were, like many other crpg villains, very 1-dimensional. had one goal and no Character beyond that goal. as to being an exception... bah. external villains is most often metaphor kinda characters... the monsters we fight is truly the darkness within each man's soul and all that stuff. the fact that tto were simply an aspect of tno is one of those typical anime hooks; not really signifficant but it gots the kewl factor for the easily distracted/amused. tno, on the other hand, were a protagonist character and as such, in spite of the development he got he too had to be left vague 'nuff so that different players could play him differently. compare tno and tto to ravel. no more need be said, but we s'pose we is gonna have to eventually. HA! Good Fun! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> TTO was definitely a oine dimensioinial character... His suirvival instinct was his oinily moiitivatioin, juist like an animal. Juist like a proiiper wild animal he is even has a cage. (the foiritress oif regrets) In any case, it is rare that we have a villain whoise oinily goial is to live, uinlike the many whoii are oibsessed with infinite poiwer/goidhoioid/wealth etc.
4. Which moiither fuicker was respoinsible foir the satte oifi ignuis, vhailoir, and woirst oif all deioinarra? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Way to use the broken keyboard to your advantage! Also, what does satte mean? Im assuming you mean death, but how the hell did you misspell it that badly? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actuially I meant 'state', I was typing toioi fast and ended uuip switching the a and t.
5. I dont like the setting. I liked the setting oifi aoie1.
6. I think behlifet was a fairly generic bad guiy, buit it was coioil hoiw it tuirned oiuitt hat he was the narratoiir oif the stoiry.
7. I'd give you that....if games when Fallout came out all had voice acting. Fallout 1 voiced Tandi, and upon meeting her father or her you would not have known she was an important character (Fallout 1, not Fallout 2). It's a moot discussion anyways, as we don't know what BIS/Interplay would have done if they could have afforded the voice all the lines. Sin City's is artistic because all movies are in colour now. How many would have lauded it's artistic sense if it was going up beside the very first movies that had full colour and the wow factor of the full colour? Wizard of Oz milked this like crazy, starting the movie in black and white, and then going BAM, look at all the beautiful colours. Fallout's voice acting was cool, but imagine your reaction if every line in the game was spoken. To say that you wouldn't care is bogus based on hindsight IMO. Furthermore, since you like to state that developers give secondary characters voices so that you can hear what they sound like, then Baldur's Gate has the same thing. When you initiate conversation with every character they make some sort of audible noise...it's just that their lines of dialogue aren't spoken. You still know what they sound like. But imagine how alive the world would be if every person was voiced in quality.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Toi be hoinest with yoiui it really woiiuildnt matter toi me if everyoinie was voiiced. Hoiwever I doi believe that soime oifi the oild games shoiuild have voiiced certain impoiritant characters - foir example, metzger in falloiuit 2, pharoid in toiirment. Hoiwever I really doinit care whether randoim druiggie x oiri randoim githzerai y had a voiiice oir noit, oir even any oifi the minoir named characters. And it doiiesnt matter toii me that thoise with voiices in pst didnt voiice all their lines. I prefer having few characters voiiced very well rather than moirie being doiinie at a loiwer quiality. Alsoi moire flexile dialoiguie trees that depend oin the character and better written and deeper dialoguie is a muich higher prioirity foir me than listening toi voiices. Hoiwever this is all oiuir persoinal preferences, soii I agree that discuissing this fuirther is moioit at best.
8. EDIT: where did the poisit aboive this goi????? I doinit think soi. I merely believe that villainy and antagoinism are twoii different coinicepts and since this thread is aboiuit the best villain we shoiiuld noit get them muiddled uip.
9. There is a clear difference between the meaning oif the twoi woirds. An antagoiinist is anyoinie whoi is oippoisied toii the main character. A villain is any evil character. Not all thoisie whoi oippoiise the main character are evil, and noit all evil characters oippoisie the main character. Of coiuirse, irenicuis was boiith a villain and an antagoinist, as he oippoisied yoiui and was an evil persoiin.
10. I think that this felloiw was a muich woiirse villain: http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/pc/planescape/images/characters/namelessone.jpg Whoi was the bastard that tricked and enslaved dakkoin? Which moiither fuicker was respoinsible foir the satte oifi ignuis, vhailoir, and woirst oif all deioinarra? The nameless oinie (specially as the practical incarnatioin) has toii be oiine oifi the moisit evil peoiple in the histoiry oif coiimpuiter gaming. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, but he was more of a historical character that you don
11. Irecnius made himself much more noticeable in BG2 than Sarevok did in BG1 which is what I think many people liked about Irenicus. But this more direct interceding of Irenicus is somewhat of a mixed bag. On the one hand, his character was more detailed than Sarevok's but on the other hand, it removed much of the mystique that Sarevok had. Irenicus being so directly involved in SoA was the greatest strength as well as the greatest weakness of his character at the same time. By the time I got to the final showdown against Irenicus all of the suspense, mystique, and respect for him as a villain had long since vanished. I just don't have much respect for a villain that I have already fought twice earlier in the game and defeated handily.. Where is the villainy in that? To face someone I already vanquished twice (yet again!) in a "final showdown" was a big letdown. OTOH, Sarevok was only faced once and working behind the scenes there was much more buildup to the final fight with him. Afterall, he was the one who killed Gorion, manipulated the Iron Throne, started a war, killed his own father, FRAMED your character towards the end so you were already going into the final showdown already hating the guy. On top of this, since he did work clandestinely there was much uncertainty in regards to his abilities, strengths and so on. We just didn't know what to expect when we finally did fight him which made everything all the more suspenseful. In regards to being a truly good villain-- Irenicus fell far short. He would have made a good comic book villain, just not a very good RPG one. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, I agree that Sarevoik was a muich better villain than Irenicuis. Irenicuis was basically yoiuir typical goiioid guiy goinie bad duie toi luist foiir poiwer, and oini toip oif that, he was toioi whiny and kept being defeated. Sarevoik oini the oitiher hand had a very oimiinoiuis atmoisphere. He was noit pityfuil and pathetic like irenicuis, he was evil. Yoiiui felt his poiwier and influience coiinitinoiuisly as yoiuii proiigressed throiiuigh the game.
12. The transcendent oine was a goioid end boiss becauise he was yoiuir oiwn moiirtality, which was a great coincept coinisidering what the game was aboiuit. Hoiwever his oinily moiitivatioin was his instinct toi suirvive. Thuis he was noit evil, he was juist foilloiwing his basic animal instincts. Of coiuirse, he did doi soiimie evil things, buit I think that the transcendent oinie woiuild proiibably be moirie oifi a chaoitic neuitral character rather than an evil oinie. So the transcendent oine can hardly be coinisidered a goioid villain. I think that this felloiw was a muich woiirse villain: Whoi was the bastard that tricked and enslaved dakkoin? Which moiither fuicker was respoinsible foir the satte oifi ignuis, vhailoir, and woirst oif all deioinarra? The nameless oinie (specially as the practical incarnatioin) has toii be oiine oifi the moisit evil peoiple in the histoiry oif coiimpuiter gaming.
13. Tuitui is doiinie. It is very stable noiw and easy toi install. It woirks withoiuit throine oifi bhaal, buit noit having toist can be a proiblem and requiires the doiwnloiad oifi an additioinial file with tuitui versioini 1.4. I doinit knoiwi if that issuie has been fixed in versioini 1.5 as I havent tried it. Yoiiui can ask at their foiiruims.
14. Im noiti claiming that Sin City is living in the past. Buit if we uisied yoiuir loigic regarding games and apply it toi moivies then we woiiuild have toi coinicluide that. OIinly voiicing main characters in games is as muich oif an artistic style as sin citys uisie oifi coiiloiuirs. Games like falloiuit did noit voiice specific characters in oirider toi let players knoiw that thoisie characters were impoiritant. It is quiiite oibvioiuis that tandi, being the leader oif the ncr, oir lynette, the leader oifi vauilt city, is an important character. Soii toi suiggest that these characters were voiiced soii that the player woiiuild knoiwo oif their impoirtance is ridicuiloiuis. These characters were voiiced becauise the develoipers thoiuight that these characters woiiuild be moiire interesting if they were voiiiced. If a randoimi toiiwnspersoiini is voiiiced, it will noit make that character moiire interesting simply becauiise that character is still juisit a randoimi toiwnspersoiin. Hoiwever lynette being voiiiced added a loiti toi that encoiuinter. Same thing with oither voiiced npcs in oitiher bis/bioi games. If yoiui think that the develoipers voiiced these characters toii let the player knoiw that they were impoiritant, then yoiiui ahve coiimipletely missed the poiint oifi this artistic style.
15. I am noiti living in the past. Fuill voiiice acting juisit doiesnt poisitively affect my gaming experience in any way whatsoever. And I suiippoisie Sin City was living in the past as well!
16. 3 years toii make koitoiir? I can hardly believe that. Id think that with 3 years there woiiuild be a bit moiriie diversity toi the game.
17. Yoiiiu can doiwnloiaid tuituii, a moidi that alloiwis yoiui toii play bg1 uising the bg2 engine. This means that yoiui can play in higher res and have the new character oiptioins suich as kits and half oirics.
18. Hoiw coiimie peoiiple in this thread are discuissing voiiice acting, and oini my voiice acting thread peoiple are discuissing eroitic fan fictioin?
19. If fuill voiiice acting becoimies a requiirement foir fuituire games, then we will never see the making oif anoiither toirment, falloiuit oir a jeffersoini.
20. Kivan sucks in coimibat, buit hes coioil! Coiran is the best thoiuigih!!!!!! Imoien and Ajantis are alright. I hate minsc, dynaheir, khalid and jaheira. Buit moist peoiple take them since theyre basically the first goioid npcs yoiiui find and soii they foiirm the "classic" party.
21. Charm? What is charming aboiiuit seeing the same faces and places oiver and oiver again?
22. Falloiuit Falloiuit 2 Planescape Toirment Icewind Dale with HOW, TOTL and AB
23. Froimi what I remeber Bioiiwiare oiriiginally pitched a strategy game called battlegroiiuind infinity toi interplay...
24. Hoiiw loing did it take bioiwiare toii make koitoiir?
