In what order will you play the upcoming 3 rpgs
Leferd replied to Sammael7's topic in Computer and Console
I already started playing the W2 demo and the Eternity demo releases next weak. Probably won't get to DAI until a few years, and not until it hits the bargain bin with all their DLC compiled together. Then again, I've barely started DA2 and ME3 -and by then there will probably be other games holding my interest. -

Per Sawyer on his Tumblr: ... "theovf22stuff said: Hey Josh, just another question. The Backer Beta will give you a clear impression of how players approach the early game content, providing the team with information on what can be modified, removed or introduced. Without that kind of information for the later parts of the game, and only a small team working on PoE, how do you balance it? How do you approach it? Our Backer Beta actually targets mid/high levels (5th-8th). Due to testing our E3/press demo and a few hours past that, I think we have a pretty good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of various classes/attributes in the early game. As an example, I recently re-ordered the rogue’s starting abilities because Finishing Blow and Dirty Fighting, while nice, seemed much less fundamental than the combination of Crippling Strike and Sneak Attack at 1st level. We also know that there’s currently a bias against Resolve and Perception for characters who aren’t in the front line, so we’re thinking about ways to address that." http://jesawyer.tumblr.com/post/94343447161/hey-josh-just-another-question-the-backer-beta-will

Writing in cRPG's -- a case study (Mass Effect)
Leferd replied to PrimeJunta's topic in Computer and Console
Didn't initially catch the Ivanhoe parallelisms but certainly whiffs of Empress Matilda and Henry II. I'm curious to see if Avellone's prose can hold up in novella form. -
I'm keen to know more about the game world. My understanding is that the setting will be detailed in the Campaign Almanac, which was included in some of the backer tiers and available as an add-on. So as we are about a week away from the backer beta and in the final few months stretch before the full release, I'm wondering when we'll get a heads up as to when this will be made available for download? This is certainly something that I'd like to devour before actually diving into the game and get immersed with all the lore and knowledge of what's going on in the world. I suppose the same question could be asked of MCA's novella as well.

Confirmation of pledge rewards
Leferd replied to dancingcrab's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You will have the option to pick Steam or GOG for your download version. The physical copy is just a physical copy and not tied to any particular download agent. -
<sigh> A portrait did that?I hope this game's lack of romances is blatant and obvious enough throughout the course of the game to shake loose ^^this^^ segment of the fanbase from the IP once and for all. You guys are just as bad as that small group of Turn-based fanatics that that came here at the beginning of the kickstarter and raised a ruckus. No I take that back. You're far worse. At least the TB'ers stopped begging when it was made clear to them that PoE won't be turn based. A tad harsh, no?

dear obsidian, as PoE is 'posed to call to mind the ie games, perhaps you might add a neeber/noober to your upcoming release. we would suggest that the npc would incessantly demand romance from one of your party members. he, or she, would follow after your party spouting bad poetry and enumerating advantages o' romances both specific and general. perhaps the npc could sing as am suspecting that would make appropriately annoying. please make the neeber/noober character genuinely romanceable, but have the entire romance arc run its course in the span of a handful o' over-the-top and melodramatic dialogue options, culminating in a slide/cut scene consummation guaranteed to satisfy no genuine fans o' game romance. outlasting neever's (just a suggestion for a name) demands for an abrupt and hollow "romance" should result in a moderate xp gain for the character, much as preternatural patience when facing noober were resulting in a BG xp reward. finally, do not forget to make neever killable. make the him/her killable in some horrific way. same-sex neeber/noober is a given, 'course. our suggestion addresses three recently annoying requests that have appeared on these boards: romance, homage, humor. thank you for your consideration. sincerely, Gromnir esq. HA! Good Fun! ps as an alternative, allow us to choose a dialogue option whereby we may drive a 20 penny nail into our own ears to avoid listening to further romance demands. Will there be achievements?? There better be achievements for this! I demand achievements.

Details of Gameplay Each playthrough of the game will last between 4-6 in-game weeks, with content for each game day. This time was chosen to reflect the amount of time a German soldier was expected to stay on the front before being sent back into reserves. At the end of that time there will be multiple endings available, completely dependent on how you play the game, and then you will be sent back to the main menu, where you can play a "new game" with your stats, skills, and experiences completely reset, or you can play "new game +" with the same stats, skills, and experiences, making the game progressively harder on each playthrough. Planned Main Gameplay Elements: Dialogue with fellow soldiers Daily routine (i.e. guard duty, mail, equipment maintenance, deliveries) Battles with the French Dynamic, random events that play out differently depending on the player's previous actions and affect stats for Fritz and NPCs. Planned Atmospheric Elements: Soldiers with personality and stats Branching dialogue options Interactive character development that takes the stats and relationships of NPCs into account Skill development based on learning from NPCs Fritz's thoughts change and flash on the screen with events and stats Inventory (can be used by the player, or as gifts or bribes) Stats for illness, trauma, hunger, loneliness Letters to and from home, with care packages that affect stats All of the above dynamically integrated and dependent on the situation and the player's actions. Multiple endings Base Goal The game will be playable on PC and Linux. We will be creating 10 major NPCs (with fully fleshed-out storylines of their own and complex interaction with Fritz), and you will get the opportunity to interact with 3 of them per playthrough. There will also be 25 minor NPCs (who interact minimally with Fritz), of which there will be about 10 per playthrough. For combat, the player will either be shooting in a desperate charge across the battlefield or in close combat in the trench. The player can control the character in cardinal directions (WASD) and stand, crouch, or lie down. The shooting mechanic will be basic---aim with a crosshair and fire---but accuracy will be a challenge, as Fritz's aim and speed will be influenced by his stats and health. The game will feature at least three different interactive settings: the trench, the battlefield, and the hospital. There will be at least 21 different endings. Funding goal: $15,000 Thanks for the tip! The setting and approach looks really unique.

The Iraq war was a disgrace, but sometimes we forget just how much
Leferd replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
“[T]he most severe impact of a dam failure would be [for] the City of Mosul, located 50 kilometers [31 miles] downstream of the dam,” Petraeus’ and Crocker’s 2007 letter says. “Assuming a worse [sic] case scenario, an instantaneous failure of Mosul Dam filled to its maximum operating level could result in a flood wave over 20 meters [65 feet] deep at the City of Mosul, which would result in a significant loss of life and property.” Mosul alone is estimated to be home to more than 1.5 million people. Flood waters, albeit at a lower level, could reach all the way to Baghdad, more than 200 miles further down the Tigris, depending on the performance of another smaller dam further downriver. A 2011 report written by a USACE official and published in Water Power magazine estimated failure “could lead to as many as 500,000 civilian deaths.” https://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/mosul-dam-control-terrifying-dam-iraq-life-death/story?id=24878057 perspective. the bomb at hiroshima were ultimately responsible for ~120k-135k deaths. isis now has the capacity to kill 3x as many people. we can all hope that such a thing does not occur, but that damn is in a near constant state o' collapse as it were pretty much built on sand and soil. all that needs happen is for isis to fail to adequate maintain the facility. Yep. Would be an absolute catastrophe. Kurdish Peshmerga are willing, motivated, and seasoned fighters. Unfortunately, they were simply outgunned by ISIL (ISIS, IS?), stretched too thin, and ran out of ammo. US/NATO don't need to have boots in the ground but they need to supply bigger guns and ammo to the Kurds. These weapons shouldn't be withheld on the condition that the Iraqi government gets their **** together. -

ISIL also took control of the Mosul Dam from the Kurds. Shades of Hoover Dam and NCR/Caesar's Legion. Not good. -

Well, lets not forget Fallout 1 & 2, which predate the BG games, don't use the infinity engine, and cemented BIS's name in the industry at a time when Bioware was trying to prove itself with Shattered Steel. The original Fallouts weren't exactly huge sellers and Interplay would have gone defunct a lot sooner if it wasn't for the success of the IE games -especially the best seller BGs. Though the Fallouts put the BIS name on the map, it were the IE games that cemented their legacy (and survival...atleast for a while).

Mass Effect's presentation was really nice. I liked the homage to 80's style sci-fi movies - especially the film grain and film noire nods to Blade Runner. The combat was substandard and the absurd use of recycled levels was terrible though. Overall, it was really a fun and enjoyable game. BG2 KotOR - props to Bio. They got Star Wars right. BG Mass Effect Jade Empire Dragon Age Mass Effect 2 I only barely got into Kirkwall for DA2 and got a couple of hours into ME3. NWN was just terrible - HATE -hated it so much. I can see why SWTOR got Ray and Greg fired/pressured out by EA. A shame, as without the Doctors, BioWare, Black Isle, and Obsidian wouldn't be where they are now. Not interested in DAI at all.
