  1. "sneaky" http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sneaky we lied. we were deceptive. we were sneaky. Uh-uh. no, sorry. In a game where Lying/Deception use different skill/attribute checks than Stealth, you cannot group them together as one and claim that they both constitute "sneak" we were cautioned about being rude to you in spite o' you getting sweary and silly... but you make difficult. we said, "our first encounter with the ogre in the caves were solved diplomatically... or sneaky, depending on how you look at it. should we have been robbed of all xp for quest completion because we chose to complete quest other than through violence?" now, explain what is wrong with our observation. you ASSumed that by sneaky we meant stealth. that was an incorrect ASSumption, the fallacy o' the ASSumption made all the more obvious by the fact that we observed initial that our solution were diplomatic. we then added that depending on how one looked at the situation, our solution were in fact sneaky. we used deception. we were not genuine diplomatic but were sneaky and deceptive. you ASSumed and is making a big issue outta nothing. congrats. HA! Good Fun! I'll take that definition of sneaky and take my Quest XP for it too. Something a scoundrel would do, whether stealth was used or not.
  2. PoE promises to have plenty of C&C and roleplaying options outside of combat. Companions won't be romanceable but they will be deep.
  3. Shogun 2 is CA's best game. They essentially got everything right. Of course, in terms of scope, feudal Japan is the least expansive if the Total War series- and in many ways that makes it a great strength as they were able to concentrate on the gameplay. My primary concern with Rome 2 was the tactical portion of the game. Battles were terrible and not fun. Poor AI and instant resolution. Large battles took less than 10 minutes. Super long video but Angry Joe effectively and productively showed what was wrong with the game. I've tried the Caesar DLC but didn't go too much into depth. I'll have to try again when I have time and see how far along they've gone since release. I really really wanted to like the game -especially since it came directly after the masterpiece that was Shogun 2. Fair to say that Rome 2 disappointed me like no game ever has before.
  4. Yep. And Kaz and Polina stated as much. They'll get to them as time and resources permits.
  5. Which would be great if almost every talent/ability/spell wasn't geared towards combat effectiveness. I made a 'pacifist' Rogue earlier this morning to see if you could complete the quests in the beta without combat. Kitted an Orlan Rogue out with Stealth and Mechanics for skills, and pumped Intellect, Resolve, and Perception all to 15. However, every single one of the class abilities I was able to choose from when leveling were combat-oriented. Even the bloody class and race extras at character creation were geared toward combat. Honestly, I don't mind the idea of quest XP only, but for the love of the deities why is every single ability/perk/talent/class special ability/spell all geared toward combat effectiveness? They separated combat abilities and non combat skills into non mutually exclusive trees. You'll notice you have athletics, sneak, lore, and mechanics on separate tracks from your combat abilities on level up.
  6. From the Kickstarter pitch: "Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment." Yep. Some folks sure got bamboozled with those lack of romances. Suckers. "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women." Agreed. Conan quote > Genghis Khan. ^ Stark, laconic, brevity. Just like how we like gameplay and romances to play out in our simple hack n slash Obsidian RPGs!
  7. Surprising that people aren't talking about this feature more. It's really nifty. The IE games didn't offer this. You could turn on To-hit rolls in the settings, but that's all you'd get. This system offers far more information, along with the added bonus that it's hidden by default, and visible if you mouse over the specific line in the combat log. That's brilliant. Neat. I didn't know about this feature. Will have to check it out.
  8. After Medieval they made the battles very fast and arcady and I never really liked them anymore. I did play through the first Rome campaign though, it was OK but I wouldn't spend time on it again. This is very true. However, I firmly believe that Shogun 2 is the best of the entire series. It had a great strategical campaign, fun tactical battles, and overall was by far the most polished release. Rome 2 was just a mess. It's tactical component was completely busted. It was in no way shape or form a finished product on release.
  9. Yay! Hack n Slash and ph47 l007 for teh w1n! No more of all this talky talky nonsense! Dark Lord is goin' down! http://youtu.be/6PQ6335puOc That's what I'm talking about.
  10. He helped flesh out some of the world lore and pantheon of gods during preproduction.
  11. Ganrich, I get what you're saying, I was only adding the known facts of the matter. For what it's worth, Josh doesn't think too highly of the d&d attribute system in any case. Per his twitter: https://twitter.com/jesawyer/status/503562789844041728 @jesawyer: @DylanFrusciante good. d&d's attribute system is one if its worst aspects, IMO. @jesawyer: @Mrakvampire i didn't say A/D&D systems are bad, but i do think that their attribute systems have always been bad.
  12. At Character Creation < that is key to this. Gromnir is saying that players shouldn't be crapped on by the game for uneducated decisions at Character Creation. That too many RPGs put far too much emphasis at CharGen, and not enough emphasis during level up. A person with an odd build will still have valuable talents that are hidden behind Attribute Requirements in PoE. While in the IE games they would just be screwed because their build may not be good enough to complete content. Gromnir wants more emphasis on power gain as you level than at CharGen. Simple as that. I think he makes a solid argument. That is... IF that is indeed the plan Obsidian has in store. If the game will have few talents than I think the attribute system needs a tweak though. As Gromnir alluded to and what Josh wrote in Update 84, Obsidian is holding back on introducing the talents in order to test the core mechanics and then add talents based on play testing. "You build a character at 1st level, but you will start the game with enough experience to advance to 5th. While we have very few Talents in the Backer Beta, you should be able to get a very good idea of the core functionality of all eleven classes. It is extremely important to us that the fundamentals of each class feel solid before we implement more Talents or move Abilities around."
  13. Should be bugged. Atleast until a producer/designer/programmer comes back and states : Not a bug -as designed. Player should be given the leeway to commit mass murder in town without NPC overreaction.
  14. Invest in Otisburg.
  15. Thankfully injuries were very limited, and the damage is mostly just in the immediate Napa area. We are about 90 miles away and I slept right through it. Woke up at 3:19 to noise outside. Dogs started barking and earthquake hit at 3:20. Decided it was big enough to warrant getting out of bed. Went back to bed at 3:21.
  16. I'm assuming this is on their to do list. Though I'm surprised it's not already in place.
  17. an additional positive is that whatever obsidian had planned, they may still change those plans. is clear that more than a few folks is underwhelmed by level 1 character generation choices that largely focus on distributing abilities and ability bonuses from races and cultures. by not revealing their plans, obsidian can tailor talents and other post level 1 character development options to address concerns o' beta players. HA! Good Fun! Straight out of Sun Tzu's playbook. ...well I'm assuming it is because I don't have it with me at the moment and haven't memorized its text verbatim.
  18. It's not just the spiritual successor to BG.
  19. Games with Interplay roots that had more role play depth than BG2: Fallout Fallout 2 FO:NV PS:T Alpha Protocol MotB KotOR2 NWN: Witch's Wake Arcanum VtM:B
  20. "...match...immersive depth of gameplay or dialogue"? Pretty much agree with you accept the excerpt above. BG2 was significantly lacking especially to many of the modern games in depth of gameplay and dialogue. Quest design was fairly linear and Choice and Consequence was very low. Dialogue didn't give the player much opportunity to role play and primarily serves to advance the plot -whose end result is ultimately a FedEx quest or hunt the bad guy. When speaking with said bad guy, dialogue is essentially content that'll lead to combat with rare exceptions of a diplomatic solution.
  21. It would be nice to know what Obsidian has in store for us with the as yet to be fully implemented talent system.
  22. Good input, but to help keep the forums tidy, there is already an active thread specifically for giving first impression feedback. http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/66770-first-impressions-thread/page-17
  23. I tried to start a game of IWD2 but I couldn't get past the rule set being based on 3rd Edition. I then tried to start a game of IWD before I remembered it was based on 2nd Edition.
  24. I'm sure the gaming mouse industry isn't too happy though.
