The difference (for me) is that one is an appeal on a mechanical level (how will the game play), while the other is an appeal based on the content in the game (what is it that you will experience in the game). When I first played Torment, the only thing I really knew was what it was going to be like mechanically (since I was familiar with IE). The execution of content within those mechanics was completely surprising for me, which I felt helped my impression of the game. By calling the new one Torment, I am now expecting something of Torment's quality, which is a high bar to reach. Note that misleading mechanical expectations can still annoy me (Bioshock wasn't a spiritual successor for System Shock 2. Despite being a good game, I enjoyed Bioshock less than I would have otherwise). But what excites me about Project Eternity is that it's content is novel to me, and for all I know they might hit a formula that is even more appealing than PST is to me. I might critique the game mechanics compared to the Infinity Engine, but that's an easier hurdle to exceed than PST's narrative. Now Torment can easily have better mechanics than PST, but it's clear to me that the mechanics of PST are a non-issue for me. Late reply. I understand your viewpoint and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. You're right that Project Eternity talked about the mechanical side of things. Torment: ToN on the other hand talks about being similar to Planescape: Torment. That does make people expect a great story with interesting characters and an unusual world. It also means that they will try to go deeper on some interesting themes and maybe have a more personal story. Will the element of surprise be as big as the one for PS:T? No. Will it tackle the same themes? Who knows? All I know is that a lot of people that worked on PS: T are involved and that this is the only shot at a spiritual successor for that game is this, and I want to be a part of it. The game could still turn out to be a piece of ****, but I choose to believe. That is the reason I backed P:E, because it was described as a spiritual successor to the IE games and it was developed by Obsidian. It could also turn out to be a piece of crap, but if I truly thought that, then I wouldn't have backed these projects.
  2. I've been willing to give that game a try but I still haven't finished any of the original Divinity games.You don't have to play the earlier games to enjoy Divinity 2. Although, I have to say that Divine Divinity was fun even if I haven't beat the final boss yet.I heard from another source that there are some cool references to the older games in Divinity 2. There are, but it's not essential. As you said, they're cool refernces.

  4. Returned to Divinity 2: DKS. I was supposed to complete quests to clear my Log Book, I ended up with 10 new quests. It isn't always the most polished game but I'm having fun wich is the most important thing for me. I'm at the Orobos Fjords running (teleporting) around, trying to wrap things up before I go to the Hall of Echoes. After that, I'll play the expansion.
  5. The Project Eternity Kickstarter told us very clearly that it would be a game in the vein of the IE games. But wich one? Baldur's Gate? Planescape: Torment? Icewind Dale? It can't be all at once. It was very clear that Project Eternity was aimed at a certain group, and Obsidian probably knew that there were a lot of us that would fork out the cash for such a game. The entire pitch video played on nostalgia trips. What makes Torment so different? Is it because they use the word Torment? I'd supported the game either way. Is it because I think inXile is a great studio? Not at all. It is because there are enough names involved in the project that I am a fan of. Small roles or not, the people involved makes me excited. McComb, Saunders, Ziets, Mitsoda, Avellone, Morgan. They might not make a game as good as Planescape, I don't think they will, butI am happy that we are getting an rpg that uses a new setting and explores themes that could be interesting.

  7. Well, Arcanum is done now. Even if the game could be improved upon in many areas, I thoroughly enjoyed what I played. The things I liked about the game were enough to make me forgive the bad parts. I'd love to see a spiritual successor that improved some things. Focus on turn based combat and let me control the party. Make companions more interesting. Having companions to chat with is half the fun. A better balance in skills. I was mostly combat/tech focused with some persuasion, but harm was a very effective spell. Too effective. The whole weapon/armor breaking was very annoying and I dislike that in most games that implement it. I'd love to see an Obsidian developed spiritual successor that rights the wrongs of Arcanum. Maybe it's possible with Kickstarter.
  8. I hadn't noticed this thread. I'm of the oppostie opinion than the OP. I want a codex about everything. I want to read until my eyes start bleeding. I want lore about factions, locations, culture, people and everything else they come up with like monsters, plants, etc. It helps flesh out the world and those who don't want to read that stuff won't have to.
  9. Recrutied only 1 more in the void? Or only 1 so far? Only 1 so far. Turned the game off after that.
  10. Arcanum. Completed every quest in my journal and then entered the Void. Recruited yet another character there wich means I now have a party of 8. I would have kept playing and completed the game if it wasn't for the football that I don't want to miss.
  11. I wouldn't mind if Obsidian had a try at the adventure genre even of rpg's is what I prefer.

  14. It might just be me but it seems to me that the two latest updates were like this to not steal to much attention from the Torment kickstarter.
  15. Barely played anything since last Thursday. I've played maybe three hours in seven days. Finished the Iron Clan quest. and the St. Mannox quest. My next destination is Thanatos. I just need to complete some quests, or maybe I'll just steal a few shop inventories and buy that ship. I've completed every side quest available to me except one that requires a visit to Tulla.
  16. Finished Mass Effect 3. Going to go lie down for a bit.
  17. Both Bioshock 1 & 2 seemed like they would be good games, but I have the same problem you have, so I stopped after 30 minutes in both. Only first person games I remember beating are some Elder Scrolls games, FO3 & FONV, V:TM-Bloodlines and Dishonored. I couldn't even finish Portal because of the first person view (lol). Oh, I did beat Bulletstorm, how the hell I did that is still a mystery to me. Anyway, playing Arcanum and Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 3. The game has overstayed its welcome and I can't wait to finish it. Sure, I do enjoy the gameplay, but it has gotten a bit repetitive, but mostly it has become annoyingly stupid. The last few missions has forced me to chose a party member to disable something and I defend them. The problem is not difficulty, that I would have been okay with. It just feels like they couldn't come up with something better. I still hate turret sections, luckily there aren't many of those. Enemey vareity is better than I remember it being in Mass Effect 2, so I'll give them credit for that. The Infiltrator is also more fun to play now that I'm at higher levels. Sniping and burning people is very effective, big surprise. I don't care much about the story anymore. I'm paying attention, but the focus is all on gameplay now. Planetscanning was streamlined, wich is good but the reapers coming after you is annoying. It's as if the designers wanted to mess with the player's patience. I'm not overly impressed with the enviroments. There are some places where one can stand still and find a great view with great looking backgrounds, but it's mostly brown and grey in most places. The fetch quests are way too many. Give me this, give me that, bla, bla, bla. For me, the gameplay is what is saving the game, and the soundtrack is also okay, I'll give it that. Arcanum. Been roaming around, completed unfinished quests. I think I have over 70 quests marked as complete and that doesn't include the thieves quests. I'm a gentleman, but even gentlemen can suffer from a case of cleptomania from time to time. I blame the Thieves guild. Found Praetor's daughter, Helped Maxim, and a bunch of other stuff. After that I moved on with the story just so I could get to Roseborough. Did a quest or two there, and I'm now on my way to the Dark Elves. Not Sure if I'll go there yet, or visit some places I have discovered on the map but not yet visited. I also need to think about who I should throw out of my party so Raven can join me later on. I don't want to get rid of Sogg, but it is becoming more and more likely that I will have to let him go. Upgraded some tech skills. Killing people with Molotov ****tails almost makes me feel bad. I'm supposed to be a goody-two-shoes. It's just that I can't help myself sometimes. I'm probably the richest man in that universe. I pick up almost everything I see. I need some counseling on that front. It has made me a lot of money, and that money has bought me a crapton of potions and other healing items. I never use shops to buy armour or weapons, I just grab what I can get whenever I feel like it.

  21. Even if I found the font of the bridge event a bit hard to read (bad eyesight), I liked the style of it.

  23. The Assassin's Creed teams consists of 500 people. The AC4 team is rumoured to have 1000 people in it. Many studios don't even have 200 employees.
  24. I have agreed that it did those things wrong. We know Eternity isn't looking at Arcanum for battle system inspiration. I'm also fairly certain I read somewhere that Troika wanted turn-based combat, but the publisher forced them to implement real time as well. That doomed the combat system right then and there. We also know that Project Eternity is not looking at Arcanum for inspiration on how to develop your character. Arcanum does not use a class system. This doesn't mean Arcanum didn't do some things right, like I listed in one of my earlier posts. I just want Eternity to take the good things from other great late 90s/early 00s crpgs and then combine that with new ideas.
