Expressing gratitude improves one's own happiness?
BruceVC replied to alanschu's topic in Way Off-Topic
I though the experiment is a nice thing to watch but I question the connection between what they are saying and the reasons that people can improve there happiness levels on a permanent basis As hinted by others if a person in life does something positive of course there happiness levels will increase. Its like going to an excellent restaurant and eating a fantastic meal and then asking that person " are you happy at the moment " ...in most cases they will say yes. Obviously almost any person who is asked to phone someone they respect and love and explain why that person is special to them will feel good about it afterwards. How can you not as you are sharing a personal, important and emotional experience with them Happiness is a chemical in your brain and a state a mind that is influenced by many things and its levels are impacted by how you perceive your reality -
Okay I need to clarify my point as I see I'm being misunderstood I ask them something funny and harmless that they have never been asked before. I don't mention Porn at all. They laugh and thinks its very cool, its a nice change for them and what they are normally asked

No that's not what I ask them, give me some credit I like to joke with people and normally people avoid the Porn stars or ask embarrassing questions. So typically I would walk up to them and say something like ( the girls walk around promoting there movies ) "Hi Ladies " "Oh hi " "I'm a big fan of your movies, its great to have people of your prestigious position in the country" " Oh thanks, we having a swell time" " Wasn't your movie the one that got the award for its accurate portrayal of the struggle women face in the 21st centuary against social discrimination. Your movie really highlights the need for serious and systemic changes in our modern era" "Errr....mmm...no we are porn stars " Anyway it is much funnier when you see it in person

I was quite envious until a picture came up of some old naked dude getting an autograph from two women sitting at a table. God help you sir, what is seen cannot be unseen. No Sexpo is cool One of my friends is a professional pole dance so we always support her. Plus there are always international Porn stars walking around who are always great fun to chat to

Good points but I can add another relevant one You are taking customers out for a celebratory drink after the closing a good deal and you are expected to drink with them (technically the company pays for this so this may be the same as point e )

Keep the cider till the weekend, that would be my advice

I have to disagree, Mods are human and I prefer and appreciate the fact that they can have debates between each other that we are privy to. We all know each other on Off Topic and I don't think this undermines the forum in anyway. For me having the Mods participate in debates with us and each other adds more of a personal touch to the website. Also we know that all of us tend to jump around on topics and subjects. I want to add that when it comes to really censoring necessary topics and managing large discussions they do an excellent job. Also I've had several protracted debates with Gfted1 and everyone knows he's seldom right

it is, I'm saving up for government exams, which cost about 1100 euro, I will also have to study about 700 euro worth of books, and I'll have to join adult education programs, also costing money.Currently I'm saving about 250 bucks per month, but some months I can't keep that up. **** that is a lot of money. Best of luck on all counts(having had a weight problem myself, I definitely sympathize), I hope you don't get sick and have to use that money for medical bills. @ Kaine It must be an unusual thought that there are countries out there that if you get sick the government health care system can take proper care of you. That's why the USA needs Obamacare

Except as usual with these types of extremist groups that perception is a miscalculation. When has a terrorist attack on the home soil of a country actually caused that country to acquiesce to the demands of the terrorists? I think terrorist attacks unify people against the people attacking them 9/11 made the USA more belligerent and its military much more powerful. Granted mistakes were made, like Iraq, but end of the day what did Al-Qaeda gain? They lost a country that they operated in with impunity, Afghanistan, and have been on the run since. No country in the world gives them legal shelter and most countries are actively opposed to them. I don't see this a victory by any sense. I know you aren't saying it is but I am just mentioning the current state of Al-Qaeda

I'm not sure what you overall point is? Are you saying that rape isn't as serious as people make it out to be as some people get raped and live a normal life?

Ding ding, we have winner. If it's a recurring problem (more than 3 times in row), this will very likely be the case. JFSOCC, you do seem intelligent - so see through the excuses your ego is throwing in your face and start taking control of your own life - otherwise it's just gonna repeat itself. My best advice- start going out and taking chances, talk to girls - maybe not hitting on, just socializing at first (depending on your level of need). It's scary as hell sure, but only for the first 5-10 times .. then it gets more and more fun and easier and easier. I went from mild social anxiety to one of the most social people I know - the trick is to keep trying. That's very true. I found the most important thing about talking to ladies to not be disheartened with rejection or failure. It will happen, I'm not saying you shouldn't care what people think but accept the fact that you won't always get the result you expected

Small steps my friend, its all about small steps. In life there are some things we can change and some things we can't. You can't immediately change the fact you live with your mom as you are unemployed but can start working on your weight as it obviously bothers you. Join a gym or start jogging, don't worry about the other things but say to yourself you WILL go jogging at least 4-5 times a week. But you need to make a solemn commitment that you will always exercise. As you start losing weight other things really start improving. Once you are comfortable with your weight your confidence will improve and you can start looking at the other things. But you need to start somewhere and I would suggest your health

No, sorry, mate. I didn't mean to jump on you specifically. I'm just talking the BBC etc. All these British jihadis talk about defending muslims. But it's the god damned jihadis who are killing thousands worldwide. But that's not what they see on TV. It's not what's trendy right now. The trendy narrative is that it's Ze Evil West, so off they trot to dust-bowl nowhere and start killing muslims. It's the ineluctable stupidity and avoidable circumstance of it which riles me more than anything else. Well its a terrible cost but all the attacks like the Kenya Mall do is crystallize and reinforce sentiment that is opposed to fundamentalism. The West is seen in a better light as countries can now identify with them and the last 10 years. Its no longer a " Al-Qaeda is America's problem" its now a problem that many countries need to address, and this is how it should be. I am already seeing a difference in the content in talk shows and interviews in South Africa around what needs to be done about the likes of Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab.

I meant as in Bruce's comment that people were surprised that so many attackers were Westerners. I didn't mean that civilians getting killed wasn't shocking. Although I would observe that hundreds have been dying in a renewed wave of violence in Iraq, and no-one seems to give a flying ****. @Meshugger Yes Walsies response is what I meant @ Walsie I hear you, it irritates me immensely that people who have amazing opportunities presented to them living in Western countries still feel the need to go on these absurd and pointless campaigns to destroy the countries or cultures that have given them a home. But it shouldn't surprise people that there are people living in first world countries that are prepared to do this And the lack of media attention and concern to recent bomb blasts in Iraq and Pakistan does concern me. But I suppose the difference is these are more common in those countries and also the attack in Kenya seems more callous and unexpected. Also it wasn't a bomb being set off by some unknown suicide bomber but people attacking a mall and the event going on for days, so you would expect more attention?

*still playing DA* Oddly enough, all of those individuals seem to turn out into normal, productive members of society. With sex being a natural part of life, one has to wonder just how much damaging it really is, and how much our own society and teaching/stances are a factor in it. I can only assume that Trashman means people that weren't emotionally ready for consensual sex and not rape? Maybe he can clarify?

Whatever you do please don't tell her your view on the feminist movement and women's representation in gaming. That definitely won't win you any points Considering that she is Jewish and I have made Holocausts jokes in front of her just to piss her off, I doubt anything I say will shock her anymore. Wow, okay that's unusual

Sorry to hear you are disappointed, I imagine we will see this in certain KS projects. Question from my side, why would you want to play a game like this in Beta. Aren't you guaranteed to experience bugs? Strangely, no real bugs as of now, just frustrating game features that could theoretically be fixed. Okay I see what you mean, I suppose that's worse as the bad game design is by choice
