Shocking. Probably do need consequences, but I think the court was saying you need more evidence than just someone saying it is threatening. Throwing people in jail is serious business, right. As I understand it, the guy was convicted under the test that recognizing the words as a threat was something a "reasonable" person would do. But that as a test could remove the words from any potential context they might have. Context is always important. "I kill you? I kill everyone!" might be a threat...but probably isn't if it was proceeded by something like "Man, you're hilarious - you kill me!" In this case - and again as I understand it - the guy clearly marked on his posts in ways that would provide different context for what he wrote (some sort of Free Speech disclaimer). So what I gather reading about this decision isn't that you can post anything online without consequence, but the words themselves are not enough to convict - you have to provide intent. But how do you prove intent if they are just seen as words...surly words can prove intention?

Errr...its probably got to do with the fact women are the victims of more abuse than men on the Internet
-
I think the Supreme Court made a mistake, there has to be consequences for that kind of threatening behavior. As the women in the video said this is a blow to the rights of abused women who now could face similar vitriol and worry about being able to legally challenge it

Blatter chose the right strategy, rather than the exorbitant sums needed to buy the superpowers, he just bought all the smaller and cheaper votes. Besides, all it takes is for him to call his old friend Putin and people starts to mysteriously suffer from radiation poisoning symptoms Yes, this Sadly the African countries have been manipulated into believing that " Blatter is a victim of Colonial powers and he is the right person to fix the rampant corruption that he has presided over the last 30 years"

No. I will not. I've watched videos of it, and aside from a nice art-style and a very good looking destruction and physics engine the game looks deadly dull. I'll fight for Hatred's right to exist and be sold, but I won't bother sitting through a tedious experience just for the sake of it or to thumb my nose at pearlclutchers. However, the developers have shown themselves to be technically competent and not adverse to controversy, so I'll keep an eye out for their next game now that they've gotten a bunch of funding for it from Hatred's sales. Hopefully their next game will have more to recommend it beyond an edgelord concept. This is a very good post because you have given logical and reasonable reasons for not wanting buy Hatred You are not basing your decision on some misplaced ideological crusade

You know its worth it, I have been playing for about 45 hours (?? ) and I'm only 22 % complete or so. But I take my time and do many activities and secondary missions

The narrative was made by the journalists. The journalists like to scream "Don't buy this sick filth! If you do you're a horrible person supporting horrible people!", so many journalists jump on this that the game gets a lot of exposure. This was the wish of the developers in the first place. They now look like the radical rebel artists while the journos look like the town elders from Footloose. This doesn't bother the journalists one bit. Their stirring has generated a controversy, and controversies cause clicks. Hatred releases despite the wails of hipsters everywhere. It sells well despite the game's decidedly average nature. Are journalists upset? No. Of course not. This gives them a chance to decry it even further, allowing them to strike while the iron is hot and the topic is buzzing, allowing them to reap more clicks. The game subsequently sells enough to make it to the top of the Steam charts. Whether people bought it because of bile fascination, to thumb their nose at social justice types or in an attempt to be edgy doesn't matter. They bought it because of the way it was portrayed by the media. This is the exact same scenario that served Grand Theft Auto and Postal so well in the past. Despite these journalists and the Hatred developers expressing nothing but contempt for one another they form a mutually beneficial relationship. You raise some relevant points and some humorous ones ... " despite the wails of hipsters everywhere " Are you going to buy Hatred, who is going to buy Hatred on these forums? No judgement I am just interested in who will be buying the game and the reason why ?

I went through these links and they all seem to raise a similar issue. That parts of the Prism program haven't been effective in actually arresting anyone or leading to new evidence that has then meant people could be arrested. So the question of why have it if it doesn't really make the USA safer is valid The only criticism I would have of this view is All the links except for one are 12-15 months so maybe things have changed and it is more effective ? I don't know about this one as the one recent link paints the same picture around the ineffectiveness of the program Its possible the USA intelligence agencies gather other pertinent information that is not necessarily related to the actual arrests of people but rather real information gathering around various extremist groups ?
-
Interesting links, I'll go through these And no...I suppose no agency would say that

Well he didn't kill it, he refused to agree to extend all its provisions so certain components of the Patriot Act have lapsed. Despite objections from certain fellow Republicans But final approval of the USA Freedom Act will be postponed till later this week http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/pols-spar-sunday-night-vote-patriot-act-renewal-article-1.2241822 I'm not sure why Rand Paul thinks he knows more about what is best for the security of the USA compared to the NSA or CIA which have condemned this lack of agreement to extend the Patriot Act?

But ...but...you guys have Cloudberrys and Fudge Cheese, that has got to count for something?

I think its sad that people are going to buy Hatred just to annoy SJW and because the developers have positioned this game as " we refuse to be politically correct, support us as you are making a stand against people telling us how we can have fun " I am also amazed how easily people are manipulated into buying into the Hatred narrative

I think that it is possible that some western countries will be less progressive than Saudi-Arabia in terms of gaming, practically speaking. This due to people in countries in that region tend not to follow the rule of law so strictly. Have you ever been to Saudi Arabia? I doubt any Western country will be anywhere near as restrictive around gaming as the conservative view of the Saudi's and what they consider as acceptable gaming content My contacts with the region tell me that they do quite a lot "under the table" and the trust in the local authorities and governments are pretty much nil. That's why a ban of a game will not bring any real effect. Compare that to a ban in Germany, where every part of the distribution-chain will be heavily monitored because well, the is the law, and how can anyone break the law? That's why a ban of a game will have greater effect. Maybe not now, but i wouldn't be surprised in the near future. Okay I see your point, if Germany banned a game like GTAV then it probably would be more effectively implemented than how the Saudi's could do it

First TN, then Calax, now you ... what is going on, oh god I'm next, aren't I ... oh no, anxiety, hnngh The view today from the roof, a roof, not my roof. The house beneath this roof goes on the market soon, five million clams. Yeah that is a nice view and its close to the beach so that's a double bonus

Appalling but it shouldn't surprise us that Putin will look to present Communism and the history of the USSR as a benevolent movement that really only annexed countries like Czechoslovakia because " they were protecting the Czechs from West influence "

Nope, sorry your word isn't good enough Very well, I am sure to toss and turn with worry tonight that such an individual as yourself does not believe me, ha. Its nothing personal Nonek, I operate in the world of facts. If you say something be prepared to back it up...I don't see whats wrong with this view and I'm not going to apologize when its enforced ?

[citation needed] The studies I read existed before Gamergate so I don't believe i'm allowed to cite them, however if that is not the case i'm afraid to say I no longer have them on hand, but you're free to look for them. No Nonek, it is your responsibility to find and link them. Please don't be lazy Please explain this, i'm supposed to find papers I read years ago and no longer have on hand, and why is this my responsibility exactly? Because you are the one who made a contentious point, that I also doubt is true, and now people are questioning the facts behind what you said You said " No humans can tell reality from the false, even babies are capable of doing this, and actually show disgust for the unreal and are made uncomfortable by it."

I actually felt sorry for him to be so misinformed to take The Onion as factual...I really did feel bad for him but I also couldn't help laughing

It's quite a bizarre phenomenon. Even the most reasonable GGer (lol) seems to portray Sarkeesian as some kind of Machiavellian mastermind orchestrating the downfall of 'fun' and the rise of the matriarchy. She wouldn't even be a thing if they didn't get so butthurt when she was running her little kickstarter. Machiavellian implies cunning on such levels that you cannot help find admirable. No, more like the mainstream media swallowing professional victimhood. Hook, line and sinker. But you have to admit Meshugger you guys much a big deal around what she says, you guys post and then basically attack every single thing she says. And Twitter seems to be the medium of the outrage Can you not at least acknowledge you may be reading too much into her influence ?

Volo I can help you with many things but not basic comprehension I clearly asked for 3 examples of games and what has changed in these games that has impacted your gaming experience

Personally the reason I hate Anita and her ilk is because the media is pushing their agenda as "the only proper agenda". And if one business jackass at EA or Acti or Ubi decides to take what the GameJurnoPro's folks say and force their studios to slightly conform, we done got problems bro. I have no problem with criticizing her, but I just don't see any evidence that her agenda is succeeding (or is even all that focused.) Jack Thompson was bringing lawsuits against these companies, she's putting together youtube videos and tweets. She just doesn't do it for me as public enemy number 1. Publisher's don't care about her agenda, they care about the profits. I listed a bunch of games from 2015 earlier, they are pretty much all violent and geared towards male gamers. It doesn't bother me, that's the business. That is what will sell. That is all the publishers care about. Hurlshot has summarized my view on this latest incident I have asked a question several times and no one supporting GG on this thread was able to respond ( and yes there are people on this thread who do respond to me ) The question was simple one " name 3 games that have changed and impacted your gaming experience due to SJ pressure " And guess what? No evidence to support this apparent pernicious SJ influence So for me its like you guys wait for comments from people like Anita, then you all get "outraged and offended " despite the fact its just her view and doesn't really translate to any meaningful changes by publishers So then I have to ask " whats the reason behind this anti-Anita sentiment " ? That should be the real question you guys need to ask yourselves Stop being silly. Should we have to wait for the frog to be cooked before saying that boiling water will kill it? But thanks to Gamergate, it will not happen in the close future because the insidious ****s have been exposed and are running with their tails between their legs. You should be happy that the cancer is gone, why do you wish for it to grow? Now, name three games that have been changed due to reactionary pressure. None, I can't name 3 games which is exactly my point. Its false outrage that you guys are expressing because the objectives of Anita don't really translate to anything that directly effects your gaming experience I think its a bunch of factors. Its more the fear that she could change things that drives the hate. Gamers acknowledge that the online community is only a small part of the actual audience, but at the same time tend to subconciously view it as the entire audience. So when every game site holds her up as some sort of righteous crusader for all that is good and right, and if you disagree with her you're some lowly scumbag, she looks like she has a lot more influence than she does. Especially when people who have nothing to do with gaming or gamers grab on to her cause while the people trying to debunk her are looked at as awful subhumans and their points aren't even examined. Film is similar yet different. There are artsy films, the equivalent of Gone Home or Depression Quest that get all the rave reviews and are looked at as important, but no one watches them because they don't appeal to most people. Movie fans don't freak out about it because most of the film media is all about the big blockbuster entertaining movies that people actually watch. If Entertainment Tonight started talking about how movies are garbage and need to grow up and the Lord of the Rings movies are horrible misogynist messes that propogate rape culture, and everything should be more like *insert critically acclaimed art film that everyone hates*, I'm pretty sure there would be a #MovieGate too. This is a very good post and accurately discusses the " issue around the real influence that people like Anita has " I'll want to add to this, I will do later. I am just busy at work Okay so you raised a key point in this whole discussion and that is basically " its the fear of perceived changes that concern people " So lets unpack this, GG has been active for nearly 10 months and yet we haven't seen meaningful changes in games that Anita and others raise. So when do we move on and accept that what Anita says doesn't really mean games are actually changing in a way that impacts our gaming experience. And once again if you disagree with this important statement then please give 3 examples of what has changed in games that has impacted your gaming experience. Because cosmetic changes like the removing of the limerick in PoE are not going to influence your gaming experience if you are honest But you have made some pertinent points around the film industry and SJ criticism. You could very well be right and if we saw the " Anita of Films " and her view being what film review websites supported then there would or could be a real backlash. In other words criticism of the medium, it could be film or games, could also influence how credible this is seen or how well it is supported Yet we don't see this so what does this tell us? I could argue its because in the film industry people just don't take SJ criticism to heart..they don't see it as harmful or unhelpful as gamers do. So then there is no need for the film industry to have a #Moviegate because its just not needed?
