I'm actually more than level 40.. I just haven't slept in a long while. I'm looking for a specific trainer and since you only get to train five times per level, I prefer not to 'waste' these last levels. And I'm not godlike (not in the game, at least)! Unfortunately the goblins are also level 40+ by now and apparently goblins have a much better levelling curve than my character.

Exactly! I don't understand why people are whining about the insta-travel. To me, it's the best of both worlds. Sometimes I just don't feel like walking from Skingrad to Bruma and then I just click once on the map and I'm instantly there. Perfect. Other times, when I feel like exploring, I just walk from A to B, and most often have a lot of fun doing so. Sometimes it feels like people are whining just to whine.

I guess it must be fun.. )

Damn party pooper. I was hoping someone would come into the thread, read the article and start cheering or something.

I really think you're blowing the problem out of proportion. The game works, after all. I am level 40+ right now, and although the battles are much tougher than in the beginning, it's never impossible. And it's much better than Morrowind, where you hit level 3 and all challenge was gone from the game already. It's not the best system, but it works satisfactory enough. I just wish they had done it with more.. finesse. Instead of conforming every enemy in the world to your level, they should have made some dungeons contain "your level + 5"-enemies (or something) and some dungeons should be static (bound to level 10 for example). Also, making the treasure chests scale is a BAD idea. I don't know how many "very hard" chests I've picked and yet only found 70 gold.. annoying. I usually don't like sets of armour very much, but in this game, where there are hundreds of dungeons and thousands of treasure chests, it might have been a good idea. At least better than the random stuff that's everywhere now.

I prefer my RPG's longer than 15 hours, thank you very much. I noticed recently that I have already clocked 100+ hours in Oblivion! Noone's going to claim that I don't do thorough playthrough's of the games I review at least.

I'm just waiting for the leafs to lose their next game.. Not much to discuss for me until then.

So.. I started on the main quest again today. I think I was level 38 when I started and I'm around level 40 now. Just a tip for everyone else: don't wait that long with the main quest! I am facing 3-4 Daedra lords in every battle! I go through healing potions like Whitney through crack, my armour breaks in every battle and it takes ages to go from point A to point B, no matter if the points are barely apart. It's a challenge alright. I refuse to touch the difficulty slider. On a lighter note: I found a magic glass shield today. Now I need magic greaves and a magic helmet and I'm set )

You know you're in trouble when you're faced with a gang like this: Notice that there's an angry ogre hiding behind my sword to the right too.. Ogres are quite lethal at level 40 (or whatever I am right now).

Well, at least I found a book about artifacts of Tamriel. In it they discuss the very unique pieces of armour/weapons that supposedly exist in the world. They're a good incentive to make yourself investigate that umpteenth similar-looking dungeon ) At least for me.

I became guildmaster of the thieves guild not more than five minutes ago. I liked the last mission, it was a bit tougher than the rest and pretty satisfying. I'm thinking about starting the mage guild quests now, because I want to enchant my helmet with night eye.

I haven't touched my difficulty settings, but then again, I loved the sword fight from the start so my Blade skills are disgustingly high (plus the fact that I found a ring that gives 15 Blade and 15 Block skills permanently). I usually sneak up on things, get the initial 6x surprise bonus (which sometimes even insta-kills some of the mages and stuff, even at my current level 36!) and then just run in, whack them, run out and repeat ad nauseum. It's not very difficult, except for the INSANE goblins. They beat the snot out of me.

Odd. I am a blade/light armour/magic-user myself, but my Blade skill was the first to hit 100. I am still only in the fifties with my magic schools. They level slow as hell! The second skill that will reach 100 for me is my armourer skill. One battle and my Daedric sword plummets from 125 to below 100. At least that's how it feels.

Just wait until the Goblin Warlords start popping up.. in pairs.

Oblivion is a fantastic game, but it is definitely not without flaws. Some of the same generic-ness that plagued Morrowind is still visible in Oblivion, and that has everything to do with the scaling. Instead of trying to balance out the entire, gigantic world with predetermined monster levels, they've tried to come up with a system that automatically scales the environments to suit the player. It works well in giving you an even difficulty curve, but it fails horribly in making the world seem to be there for a reason other than to provide a challenge for your level. A few special monsters (named ones), a few predetermined dungeons, a little more love and devotion to the content and Oblivion would have been even better. I still think it's great and I'm having a blast (except when I run into those damn Goblin Warlords..).
-
I just wish that they had done it the ordinary way: placed tough monsters in the difficult to find parts of the world, slowed down the levelling rate of the main character and made the levels on opponents static. The dungeons should have been filled with pre-determined stuff, hand-placed stuff, both enemies and loot, instead of this total overdose of crap I am seeing now. The scaling really offsets some enemies. Goblin warlords beat my super-equipped mega-fighter nine times out of ten, for example. Barehanded!

I found a pair of gloves tonight that gives my character permanent 105 ft radius Sense Life (I think it was called). It's a great pair of gloves so now I have to put up with everything shining purple through walls and stuff. Oh well, such is life. I also found a piece of body armour that removes 15% of the damage inflicted upon me. Together with my boots of "run like hell" (something like that at least) I only need magic greaves and a magic helmet and I have a complete set of magic armour. Anyone know of any quests that give enchanted helmets?

First period isn't over yet and Jagr has three helpers. Mr. Assist must be crying blood just about now.

Actualy, I think that's the best part of the AI: it actually tries things, which sometimes fail. I was entering a fort of some kind the other day, when a really mean Daedra Lord found me. In panic I climbed up to the top floor of the fort, but there the floor was broken. As I had almost no hitpoints left, I ran to the edge and jumped across the hole in the floor to a window sill on the other side. The Daedra Lord followed and tried to do the same, but didn't have enough speed to reach my little plateau, and thus fell and died two stories down. I thought that was awesome. Gothic had the same type of AI, where it seemed the intelligence was actually coming up with ideas, some which worked and some which failed.

I bought the Collector's Edition of Morrowind. On import. Most expensive game I've ver bought Biggest disappointment also.
-
Not sure.. perhaps 35-36 or something. It slows down after you get to master in a few of your main skills.

I've only noticed bad pathfinding whenever I have someone follow me. Sometimes I've lost them for like ten minutes and eventually had to reload the game. The creatures have been annoyingly difficult to make fun of in my experience so far.
