i'm somewhat amazed at how many people still don't get how steam works. you only need to be online when you activate your copy of new vegas. you can play in offline mode from then on. no need to have an internet connection during normal gaming.
-
yeah, that was possibly the worst preview I've ever read. online journalism needs to raise its standards.
-
i couldnt be more excited. so far this is sounding like exactly what i was hoping for new vegas
-
whoa everyone is forgetting Chronicles of Riddick, that game was completely awesome and the movie blew chunks
-
aliens is awesome don't get me started. its also a movie, not a series. dont even get me started. i swear to god... the only thing i need now is for someone to say warhammer 40k is a ripoff of starcraft and then i can completely lose it. edit: why is it so hard for someone to LOVE aliens, star wars, and blade runner, and consider each of them the absolute best movie of their respective genres? (sci-fi war movie, space opera, cyberpunk noir -respectively)

whoa, i don't bash bioware for formulaic stories, you got me confused for someone else methinks. I do defend star wars from such criticism though. the whole point is its a formulaic story told in a cool setting. I DO bash bioware for having made some crappy games (nwn oc, jade empire), but i generally really like bioware for baldurs gate, dragon age, and mass effect2 also: comparing blade runner to star wars makes no sense, totally different type of movie. maybe we should compare Up with The Pianist because they both have sad parts? I cried more during Up than the Pianist, does that mean its a better drama? no kid hated star wars. ... look at me i'm turning into volo... look at what you all have done to me...

i like starcraft 2. I like balance patches that make the zerg better.

Quite true. The whole 'power of myth' thing was basically Joseph Campbell glomming onto Lucas because it would sell a lot of books for him, and SW nerds glomming onto the line Campbell was selling to gain intellectual cover for their guilty pleasure. If you want a popular late-70s film that mirrors the archetypal epic hero's journey, the best example isn't Star Wars, it's Rocky. The genius of the Star Wars films is/was in design: the art, models, sets, costumes, makeup, puppets, and sound were unbelievably cool. And cool production stuff like that is really really important in getting the audience to buy in. On topic, I'm mucking around with BG2. Just did the obligatory early run to Watcher's Keep to grab the potion bag, ammo belt, and bottomless quiver, after having already completing assorted minor quests, plus the Keep and the Druid Grove. I think the Planar Sphere is next. Then maybe Firkrag (or however you spell it). i love rocky, and totally agree about the hero's journey aspect, but rocky is a hard movie for a lil kid to watch so I didn't appreciate it until I was a bit older. as an aside: bashing Joseph Campbell doesnt make you any cooler than hugging his nuts does either. star wars is openly, and obviously, awesome. It's too bad what happened to star wars in the last 15 years though, it really took away a lot of the magic. I'm not a star wars apologist, I just hate that somewhere along the way it became cool to bash it. If the only thing "star wars" that existed was the first 3 movies, and maybe those first 3 zahn books, then bashing star wars would be a sure fire way to ostracize yourself from every sensible person ever.

maybe EA realized that this would be cheaper than buying a 90+ metacritic score
-
star wars is probably the most quintessential hero's journey movie. just because a story is not totally original does not mean it doesn't exist, the story of star wars is brilliant, and has been for hundreds of years. edit: the emperor had several flaws, one of which was hubris to an extreme operatic level

man, that red dead redemption undead mode sounds more and more awesome every time i hear about it. it's the only game left this year that i'm planning on buying right away.
-
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Vol works in retail. and suddenly everything makes sense. btw: I was figuring I'd end up buying Dragon Age 2 since I really liked the first 1, but the gameplay videos i've seen have put me in a "wait and see" mode, so the requirement to Pre-Order in order to get all the characters really really pisses me off because I frankly think that the game looks sketchy based on what we've seen so far. or course, one could always pre-order, not open it, and if the game gets poor reviews just return the game for a refund. I'm probably going to end up doing this i suppose, but it bothers me that I have to resort to such shenanigannery in order to get a full game.

the only people willing to pay a monthly fee for a video game are too busy playing WoW to play this.
-
it seems to me like they are requiring a preorder for the special character cause they are worried about review scores. otherwise why not just do it like shale? (ie free if you buy a new copy)
-
i want some reviews to pass the time. stupid no reviews till release malarky. i also want the release date moved to right now, so i can play over this weekend.
-
im playing civ5, warhammer 40k DoW2, and left4dead2 trying to pass the time until new vegas is released. then I'll play that until my eyes fall out, at which time i will be getting RDR undead nightmare.
-
wow, i've been preparing myself to enjoy this game, but the videos I keep seeing make it look just awful. I think I'm going to bury my head in the sand on this one and wait for the reviews to come out before I consider getting it. maybe they are going to make mass effect 3 into a 4x game just to really mess with people's heads.

how did you discover that new vegas has worse bugs than fo3?
-
I did the opposite, and uninstalled fo3 about 5 months ago to make sure i didnt touch it before new vegas was released. I want to experience new vegas as its own animal, without too much influence of fo3 in my head (though some is inevitable)

askia has been pumping out tons of cavalry this game, so i'm not sure about when or why the pc uses mounted units. my current game i was going for culture, got bored and started building an army. now only myself and hiawatha remain, each owning roughly have the globe. its 1920, I've just finished the manhattan project, I have artillery and tanks. he is producing a seemingly endless stream of musketmen. This shouldn't take long...
-
i'm going to hold off judgment till the game is released, but i was hoping for DA2 to be like DA1 with a more sophisticated combat system and less combat overall, or at least have the combat areas be smaller in length so you dont have time to get bored. It should be 3-5 different unique-feeling fights, then a boss encounter, not 20 fights and a boss encounter. i was definitely not looking forward to them making DA2 an action game. but if its good i'll enjoy it nonetheless. I just worry it might be like jade empire, I hated that game.

i have now played a science victory game with the iroquois (sp?) and a domination victory game with japan. I enjoyed the domination game much more. It ended with a fierce campaign against napoleon, his musketeers beating my samurai, so i upgraded to riflemen which were stalemating, but a few more turns and I had infantry and then the tide began to turn. it helped that I had a huge gold generating empire, enough to buy a new unit each turn and throw it into battle. eventually i wore him down, but i probably had to chew threw about 15 units of musketeers first. once they were all dead then i just rolled over his entire empire. the next biggest threat was russian swordsmen. I wiped them out in 3 turns. game.set.match.

civ 5? i know thats gonna keep me busy at least until fallout. like movies? you could set a goal for yourself to watch 2 movies you've never seen before, every day, until fallout is released. I've done this before to pass time, it works really well for about 1-3 weeks before it starts getting too monotonous, plus you get to see a bunch of movies you've not seen before. take up painting warhammer minis? this can take tons of both time and money from you.

again with the lawyers... what did they do to you?
