Well, if you're not acting out the role by selecting choices with your given options, Then it's just an extremely linear game with few or no choices (or you have it on pause). I wouldn't classify that as an RPG. Plus, the "partially determined by chance" could, and by my defenition, will be classified as the computer computing your chance to hit and all that jazz. So in essence, the computer is rolling the dice in the background for you. It's calculating numbers. Just like you would in a P&P RPG. Games like BG DA aren't true RPGs, if they're RPGs at all, because you're not given options. You're not playing the role of a character. You're pulling the character through a predetermined route that will get you to the same end. That's a stat based action game.

How so? That defenition can apply to many(x3) cRPGs I've played. Besides. RPG can also stand for Rocket Propelled Grenades. But we already decided, for the purposes of communication in this thread, that it stands for Role Playing Game.

I've always wondered how other people viewed this: RPG to some people means: 900+ hours with a dragging storyline, and battles that give you 900+ hours (if you wanted) to choose your next move. [Heh, Roleplay Chess] But "Roleplaying" game is simply taking over the role of a certain character. Why isn't Super Mario World an RPG? You're taking the role of Mario and saving a princess. Why isn't DooM3 an RPG? You're a space marine...and there's...hell? Whats your defenition of "Roleplaying" Game?

I'd actually like to see a company as promising as obsidian turn the BG:DA series or something similar to it into something the true cRPG fans want without making it a point-click-pause-pick spell-select target-unpause-repeat game. I still think the fighters and barbarians had the best combat in all the IE games. Well, hand-to-hand combat.

I just don't get why it was canceled with no given reason. If you browse the popular gaming sites, they just state it was canceled. Half-life for the DC went gold, and the a bit before the release date it was canceled. So now there's a warehouse with a couple hundred thousand copies of HL sitting in it. The best part... I keep calling them asking for one once a year. Maybe they'll give in eventually. I'm suprised they haven't destroyed them yet.

No a different one was locked, unless it glitched (which the Mod controls do on me sometimes, so if you have some problems, board related, let me know... probably my fault). I've been a mod on here for a while, though, RL has it's moments, hence my lack of post count. As for the Patch, Lucas Arts will contact Obsidian or release the patch info themselves. So, I'm trying to put together my demo riding video and I'm ready to burn the file to cd. Every bit of software I use does not detect my DVD-RW drive. I put blank media in the drive then it just displays the drive as "CD Drive". Though, it will read DVDs and CDs normally, both gaming, video, data, etc... This happened after I updated Nero 6.3 to 6.6.0.3., then it not working so I uninstalled. Nero says it had nothing to do with their software. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, reinstalling Nero, disabling, and enabling the drive, etc.

Anyone know who owns the rights to the PC BG series, and, more interesting to me: The Dark Alliance series for the consoles? BGDA II ended in a cliff hangar.
