Cinema and Movie Thread: flickering images
Bartimaeus replied to Chairchucker's topic in Way Off-Topic
There were some lifted visuals (the bathtub scene, trashing the room, the dress, probably some other stuff I didn't consciously notice...) and you could also probably make a case for some re-used ideas that were implemented somewhat differently, but I don't think those are necessarily heinous in of themselves. No, I think Black Swan was pretty clearly the pathetic rip-off of Perfect Blue which took it many steps farther than Requiem for a Dream did, which is why even though I hate Black Swan, I still found at least a few things in it to appreciate...unlike with Requiem for a Dream here, which I despise with practically every fibre of my being for a multitude of reasons. Bleh. That rat bastard had the gall to claim he wasn't inspired by Perfect Blue, too. -

Requiem for a Dream (2000). Having finally watched this dumpster fire, it doesn't really even feel worth the effort to talk about. Honestly, I didn't think I could possibly like this less than Black Swan, but here we are. Someone shove a rusty pike up Darren Aronofsky's ass, it'd probably make for more entertainment than anything he's ever made. -

More Hardwood + Round Holes = Lots of Scoring in Basketball 2K19

Well, I definitely wasn't expecting the Kings to rip the Warriors a new one at home. Game 7 should be it. that's one way to put it -
I saw a tweet that explained the reluctance to draft a RB high fairly well: Money and positional value plays a lot into when players are drafted, and RB is the second lowest non-specialist position (...I'm not really sure why centers are the lowest, especially given that bad centers are thought to be causative of bad QB play*), so it just doesn't make sense to draft them high. The money paid in the first round does drop off quite a bit though, so once you get to the end of the first round, you do have a bit more freedom to choose whom you like. 1st pick: $41m, 5th pick: $31m, 10th pick: $21m, 20th pick: $14m, 30th pick: $12m. Once you're in the 20s and beyond, it's a lot easier to pick a RB. *On the other hand, it's not really fair to directly compare a single person position like center to a multiple person position like WR in this manner. There's always only one center on the field, but there's almost always at least 2 WRs on the field and often 3, sometimes 4 or even 5. So these numbers are slightly misleading, as QBs are obviously more expensive than WRs on a positional basis. (e): RBs picked at #8 and #12 by the Falcons and Lions respectively, tho

Horrific play by the Bucks to give up the game at home again (most shockingly by Giannis, who was just awful). We didn't deserve to win, and we didn't. Fire the coach, cut the players, etc. Also, looks like the Warriors will probably be moving on! -
bluetooth update: i got this cheap magnetic antennae base that you stick on the side of your PC after hooking it up to the PCIE card, the bluetooth range on my headphones is now about 3x as long as it used to be compared with the default antennae that came with my AX210 card; presumably the wireless is also much better, but I didn't actually test it looks a little ridiculous, but seems to work really well

Kind of a shame about Fox breaking his finger - if they had won that previous 1-point game and were up 3-1 right now, I'd be of the mind they could get a win in one of the last three games, but now with him all busted up and the series being split 2-2, not really feeling it. Guess we'll see how they do tonight. -

A consistently good team could be the #1 seed in the league, but a wildly streaky team that barely makes the playoffs could beat the crap outta that consistently good team, then turn around and get smoked by a much worse team. It happens a lot more in football when all playoff games are sudden death, but even though it's less likely, such anomalies can happen in best of 7 series as well. In my opinion, the Bucks simply are usually not as good as they're advertised; outside of 2021, they've had way too many series where everyone but Giannis looks just awful for 4-7 games of the series. Jrue Holiday forgets how to make even gimme layups as soon he gets into the playoffs, Khris Middleton is usually either on fire and making everything or crippling the team with just awful shooting and not much else in between, the roleplayer shooters who had good 3-point shooting percentages in the regular season (even if they didn't have the most minutes) suddenly can't buy a basket given completely open looks if their lives depended on it. It is annoying, but I take comfort in the fact that they did win it all in 2021. -

I think Zuckerberg is the Lovecraftian version of H.P. Lovecraft. When you see pictures of old H.P. boy, you can at least see the light in his eyes: no such luck for Zuckerberg. -

bucks secondary scoring options and roleplayers suddenly all look inexplicably horrible over a playoff series while giannis has to try to carry the whole team where have I seen this one before -
dan snyder being out of the league does deserve a celebration of its own, but aaron rodgers is the story that affects me more trade compensation ended up being pretty good given the situation of him literally not wanting to play for us anymore and apparently being just about ready to retire in my opinion, too; now it's time to be a bad football team, and isn't that glorious?

i guess Stranger Things has helped shift the old trope from "there's a person in the walls" to "there's a demogorgon in the walls" -
Those iFixit toolkits are actually pretty handy, even the most basic one that they sell. Laptops are kind of random as to how difficult they will be to open up and replace a part - some of them it's literally just a matter of opening the outside back of the chassis and it being a dead simple operation, some of them you instead need to open up the middle/inside of the chassis and they drape these incredibly stupid connectors that are tiny and fragile exactly over where you need to get access to that will break with but the most gentle of tugs.

Whew, two good late games, two not so good early games. Kings manage to hold off the champs and light the beam...for now. (e): Actually, it was the two western games that were good, and the eastern games that were a joke I forgot the Knicks and Cavaliers were in the east, too, . -

Aftersun (2022). Barebones premise: a divorced Scottish father takes his young teen daughter on a vacation to Turkey for her birthday. I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to @PK htiw klaw eriF...and probably most everyone else who enjoys slow character-driven films. -
If anything, I was thinking the opposite...like Gilmore Girls, but twisted and cruel. I think that could be a lot fun. Unfortunately, I should've realized that it would be a needlessly dark and serious drama through and through instead, as that seems to be the only kind of remotely thoughtful television being made anymore. But this is the trailer that I watched (...not sure if it really has spoilers or not?): An actor can definitely over-do "flat" to the point of them no longer seeming like they're an actual human being, and this trailer just screams typical Korean ridiculous over-acting to me. Maybe this trailer is just a bad look, though...trailers usually are.
-
I missed the "grows up" part when I initially read this, so I was really excited to see a 8-16 year old girl getting revenge, but I read the full premise on Wikipedia and it still sounds sort of interesting. My only issue is that I largely can't watch Korean TV/movies due to the painful over-acting, Squid Game coincidentally being a prime example. Sigh, the trailer is also trying to do everything it possibly can to make me not give it a try. The weak...and willful? Oh, these are probably two separate groups, not one group of people who are both weak and willful. Right...although, you'd think "the willful" would be considered among the strong. Maybe it's a classic tale of The Borg and The Three Meatbags? This meatbag is too weak, and this meatbag is too willful...but this meatbag, this meatbag is just right.

My mom tried to raise me that way, but...no surprise for anyone here I'm sure, it didn't work on account of me being an inhuman monster. Indeed, as a child, I made the mistake of saying I didn't like the texture of a strawberry-rhubarb bar thing* at a large family gathering thingy. Some hurt feelings later, I learned that day I would just never eat at a family gathering or practically anywhere else outside my own home ever again if I could possibly avoid it, no matter how hungry I was. Better to always come up with some reason why I couldn't eat: I feel very sick, I already ate, I think I'm allergic, it gives me headaches, I might have celiac disease...whatever you need me to say say so that I don't have to eat your food without hurting your feelings, just tell me and I'll say it. It did have the side-effect of making me better appreciate my mom's cooking though, I can only imagine how much more miserable my childhood would've been if I had been stuck with some other midwestern floozy who didn't know how to make anything Mexican or Asian. *it was more of a strawberry-rhubarb goop than a bar, really - my gosh, aunt veronica, learn how to use an oven before you kill us with that crap
