Once the big ugly thing shows its face, take out the mwahahaha dude and it's all over. In spoilery terms Yeah, I think maybe that was the mistake I made. Plus not setting up all of the source based abilities.

I imagine that the opportunities to get reputation with a faction will come up pretty quick given that you start in the de facto capitol of the Deadfire. Given the (ingame world) political subtext implied with all four factions vying for influence in Neketaka, it might be more complex in that you won't be straight up locked out of the other three once you complete a certain mission. As for becoming a leader of one of the factions, I don't see that happening. Nothing stopping you from killing the leader if you wished, besides the fight you'd face. editwhiletyping: While the reputation would obviously have an affect, I thought maybe it wouldn't be a total lockout like being with the pirate faction but also friendly with Huana.

That's actually what I disliked about Sword Coast Stratagems as Baldur's Gate mods- with it every encounter was designed as if the mob was there only to fight that encounter. I don't really enjoy gaming the system as a player, it's doubly annoying when the enemy is doing it to you because it makes cheesey tactics mandatory. Which reminds me of the boss fights. They seem to start with a mandatory first turn to the boss, and the boss seems to have above maximum AP as well. If you're forced to start close due to being in a building or via a dialogue they can do an insane amount of damage and there's nothing (well, little) you can do about it. If you've got more space you have more options, but they're scarcely dairy free options. eg with the first boss fight I'm still wondering about the final boss fight though. It's possible it may be the strategy I was using.

Attributes
smjjames replied to thorbjorn.carlsen's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In the video for update 40, the attributes have the same names and it looks like they work the same or similar to the way it does in PoE1. Always subject to change of course. -
If you watch the for update #40, you'll see them click through the wizard subclasses. The transmuter subclass' description includes the ability to transform into an ogre via an ability called "Form of the Fearsome Brute". There might be a spell that allows something similar, but given that it would almost certainly be a transmutation spell, maybe there won't be in the interests of avoiding redundancy/preserving the transmuter's uniqueness. To be fair, I WAS reading the captions and not paying as much attention to the context of the screen. Looking at the video again, I see now, the other subclasses/specializations have their own unique spell or ability, so, it'd certainly be something that only that subclass has. I wouldn't put it past Obsidian to have some item or scroll that gives that ability to those that wouldn't otherwise be able to have it.

Speaking of balance and nerfing, how do I do that final (multistage) boss fight? Seems rather hard, and I'm on explorer mode. Though I've seen that you have to be strategic somewhat, but still....
-
Transmuters (Wizard Subclass) get Ogre Form. But the lack of Enchantment spells is a huge negative (unless they multiclass... but the non-Wizard spellcasting classes' buffs are generally not caster-only, so you'd probably be better off having the buffer as a separate character rather than multiclass). Where was it said that they do? I don't remember seeing that. Possible I missed it. Wonder if the ogre form is available for wizards that don't do a subclass? Also, the caster subclasses are better seen as specializations within a class rather than classes onto themselves, so, you'd have to give up some things since you're focused on one thing.

What's Edér smoking?
smjjames replied to Nail's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually, that description of svef makes it sound more like LSD or magic mushrooms, except you've got magic berries. The image used for svef evokes cocaine though. -
Didn't really get why they decided to nerf the Bone Spider. It costs 3 AP to cast and the thing has no magical armour. The incarnate is actually more useful. Also, the bone spider only lasts 4 turns, not enough time to do much of anything.

smjjames replied to Nail's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Whiteleaf definetly, I think he at some point asks if it's available in the White March. According to Hiravias, it's apparently possible to be high on it in spiritshift form. Svef is supposed to be the Eoran version of cocaine or heroin. -
Pretty sure you remember that wrong. You didn't even get named characters in the Beta, they were just generic characters like BB Fighter. But yeah when I look at this guy, and you ask me, "Is this a fighter, or a rogue?" Well... don't be shocked if my answer isn't rogue. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. I see that and I think: privateer. He's wearing what? Leather armor. You mean mercenary? He doesn't look piratey in any way, also, whips never made it ingame.

Sidekick potraits
smjjames replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Dun dun dun!!!!!!!!! If you don't mind telling us, what was the reason you guys didn't just keep the original companion portraits? The fact that five years passed and they wouldn't be quite the same people as they once were? -
hmm.... no trash items? What about Xaurip's spears? PoE had A LOT of trash items but with stash they were easy to seperate from stuff you wanted to keep. Yes there were a lot of trash items, provides an ample cash source though. Wait what??? No, not really. Plenty of CRPG's (is that even a thing anymore?) have raised to bar since then. Morrowind's extreme level of freedom and open world, unique multiplayer integration of games like the Souls series, even Original Sin 1 pretty much did every 2 did first, since 2 is just 1 with some slight gameplay enhancements/balances and a better story. Morrwind is not a CRPG. For a second I read that as homonid as I scrolled past, not morrowind, lol me.

I agree with you on rogue not quite seeming to fit Ydwin, with what we do know about her and was trying to rationalize it since she wields a rapier or sabre. Not sure what kind of sword she is wielding in the early concept art and sabres are already Eders thing. We'll just have to wait and see how they set it up.

Sidekick potraits
smjjames replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Uh yeah.... Not exactly. Per Josh's follow up tweet those images are actually for Konstanten, and Fessina. Bronteru and Radora are in his own words, "dust in the wind #rip". Ydwin I am 100% okay with, read her blurb. She sounds like a sort of more cold and calculated person, and any "cheer" is purely for effect. Rekke... I don't like that portrait. His description is a strange looking man who washed up on shore and speaks in tongues. That portrait doesn't look strange at all, or like a person who would speak in tongues. I would have associated that portrait more with someone that had Radora's backstory, a wizard trying to become a pirate captain. But then his backstory may be totally different now. 'speak in tongues' is just speaking in something totally foriegn to you, doesn't have to be speaking demonspeak. Rekke just speaks something that doesn't sound anything close to known languages. It's like Aedyrian and closely related known languages being the indo-european family branch, Rauataian being another language family and Rekke speaking from another language branch entirely. -
Yeah, I had read on here (not this thread specifically) something about that. I don't know the specific reasons why they changed Eder from rogue to fighter. *fumbles around with the dumb quote boxes screwing up* *decides to just leave it* Maybe she is the lightly armed fast moving sort of fighter? Which would be rogue, since that's the sort of concept. @karkarov: Rogues would be the ones flanking the barbarians as they hack their way through the melee.
-
That's correct. Eder can be a fighter or a rogue (which still makes no sense to me). Ydwin can be a cipher or a rogue. I recall something about that in PoE1, they initially wanted him to be a rogue, but decided that didn't really fit his storyline/background. Might be a bit of a callback to that, give the option for him.
