Random video game news... the critical eyes have it
Wormerine replied to Hurlshort's topic in Computer and Console
https://www.gamesradar.com/every-qa-tester-at-microsoft-is-working-on-starfield-according-to-phil-spencer/ https://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-exec-says-starfield-has-the-fewest-bugs-any-bethesda-game-ever-shipped-with/ Not exactly a high bar, but okey Microsoft really needs this one to land, doesn't it. Or take off. Pick your pun. -
There is a brief interview with Carrie Patel in XBOX Extended Showcase: Nothing really groundbreaking and most of it was mentioned in written reviews but: 1) there will be returning characters from PoEs (Deadfire especially) - I suppose that would suggest the game takes place after PoE2, though I assumed that to be the case, due to Aedyr invasion of Living Lands being teased in PoE2 DLC3. 2) Narrator from the trailer is Kai one of the first companions you meet 3) You are not a Watcher but have a unique soul connection (?) 4) The game will consist of interconnected open zones - game is similar in size to Kotor2 or OuterWorlds. I wonder if we will have some kind of world map and travel from place to place (ala. PoE1) or will those maps attempt to create more of a feeling of an open world.

How is the 5 hours spread? Is it in one chunk? Is it many few awesome times spread between 45h of meh? -
If I remember correctly they were pretty open with First Person only for Outer Worlds and people still didn't accept it. I don't know if there is a question to be addressed - it's been advertised as a First Person game from its inception. I don't think you want to list all the things your game doesn't have when you promote the title. I am sure they could spend entire interview listing things Avowed doesn't have, but that's not really helpful to anyone.

Or maybe Baldur’s Gate3 will do very well, and Microsoft will say: “Oi Obsidian, could you do for us a top down AAA Pillars of Eternity game?” ah, one can dream.

Actually the game broke even after 18 months. It seems the game kept selling after that. Great. For all its faults PoE2 deserved better than it initially got.

He did indeed say "very profitable". Well, Obsidian, where is my PoE3? No excuses now.

Newly opened Avowed steam page still describes Avowed as "first-person fantasy RPG". So my guess would be no. From https://www.pcgamer.com/avowed-rpg-obsidian-preview-magic-interview/

I suppose heavy abstraction of stat driven cRPG makes it easier to add breath. For example a difference between melee weapons in PoE2 will come down to damage rolled, PEN threshhold, recovery time and modal. In first person action RPG you need a unique and satisfying swing with appropriate hitbox etc. If Avowed will have decent melee combat with variety if weapons that already will be impressive. Even if you diffirenciate each weapon in statistic it is not something that will be easily felt in gameplay. So yeah, I do think adding variety to an action combat is much much more difficult. In general action-RPG seems to me like the most tricky combination you could try to do - I am surprised how popular it is, considering (in my opinion) how rare it is for it to turn out well. One one hand you have input driven action combat, and on the other you want stat/perk based customisation. Those tend to go completely against each other. And I think the whole point of Avowed is to have a wider appeal than underperforming PoE1&2 so simplification goes hand in hand.

Oh, PC Gamer show was such a slog I somehow missed that Shadow Gambit got a release date and demo coming next week! -
I agree overall. I try to decouple my personal expectation with it being at least somewhat tied to PoEs with what Avowed is meant to be, but it is not easy. It is a new IP for a reason. I do have some questions as to how much of an RPG it really is. With a set role, what seems like combat heavy gameplay and non-skippable companions it sounds to me more like action game if potential light RPG elements rather than what I would consider an action RPG. I am mostly disappointed as I hoped Avowed to be THE RPG from Obsidian - while it seems they have been moving away lately from player driven RPGs in favour of more focused genres with a touch of Obsidian narrative.

In Larian games stealing is a thing, and you can get caught - than bribe the guard, fight, or go to jail (and escape). Those systems tend to not be... hmm... elegant but are there. -
We are not playing a custom character though, but customising an existing one. As Boreorer pointed out Adeyr consist mostly of Meadow Folk and Wood elves so expecting us to be one of the two makes sense lore wise. I have speculated a while ago that we might play as an arcane knight (like the one Aloth trained to be) - that would make sense as an Adeyrian representative, would set our "profession" while still allowing for customisation. We see in trailer the PC using both physical combat and magic so something of that sort might be what's happening here. The trailer gives me more of Messiah of Might & Magic vibes than Skyrim. I wonder how accurate that take is.

Random video game news... RNG says "Nope"

I can't figure out if it's Bioshock or time loop game. I don't know what it is, but I am interested. That's a very good news. I can't imagine a possibility of good content in Cyberpunk as it is. -

But do we? It's supposed to be open world. Gameplay is supposed to be revealed in Ubi showcase. Starfield looks rather decent, doesn't it? -
I don't think class system makes much sense for a single player game. A starting kit yes, but classes mostly work well in party settings. Limited races are a shame - while it would be tricky to properly represent Aumaua or Orlan, that also could be very fun. I do look at the trailer and feel PoE3 would be so so much more exciting, but at the same time it is not PoE3. It is Avowed, and while it is in the same universe it is a different game. I am more worried by the tone of the trailer. It feels like a very generic power fantasy and to me it lacked character. Original teaser had a neat tone, very PoE-like. This one could be anything

Playing Lies of P demo. It's pretty chunky - I am over two hours in, and it is still going. It's pretty good. Not FromSoftware level of great, but good. Combat animation aren't quite as smooth as I would like, and they have a lot of snap attacks (long windups, and very short swings) making attack memorisation necessary. It is very cut&dry with it's animation recovery - I sometimes feel like it prevents me from blocking after an attack for longer than neccessary. Probably the main criticism so far would be enviroment. It's a nice looking game, but at least opening few sections have been very samey. If you would show me a screenshot it is likely I wouldn't be able to tell where it was taken. Game as also been fairly linear - the levels loop around "bonfires" but there isn't many nooks one could explore. Still, quite impressed so far. I killed a man and took his donkey hat.

I mean, it’s day 1 on GamePass. Will be checking out demo later - buzz seems to be very positive. I don’t think it matters if the studio is independent or not, as long as they release a game worthwhile of the price. CDPR and Larian are also independent and operate in the premium price range. I know nothing of the devs so don’t know what to expect. It always looked too good to be true, but it seems it might be solid afterall.
