Random video game news... the critical eyes have it
Wormerine replied to Hurlshort's topic in Computer and Console
Ha! I was about to write how I don't understand why there isn't any Three Musketeer or Zorro game already. Well, not literally "any", but any other than this: -
Honestly, the only complaint I had was backtracking - I felt I had to run regularly all over the local to make sure I am not missing conversations. I was fine going along with what the game gave me. I was folowing Andreas story, so not being able to push in another direction (or to another suspect) didn't seem an issue to me. The mystery was thematically and historically interesting, so I was more invested in that, than the murder mystery. As an art major, I was also happy with some dots I could connect from my education, and the soundtrack had a great selection of period music. I do have mixed fillings about the ending, but I thought it worked well overall. I really liked the decisions the game made me make - whenever they have impact when it comes to major reactivity, is less important to me, than pondering I had to do to make those choices.

I really don't know. I have been researching this thing, when I was building my PC couple years ago, and Direct Storage wasn't implemented yet. I left my NVMe slot empty for future upgrade if needed. Direct Storage or not, SSD is quicker than physical drive. I think you are right that SSD is required for faster streaming of assets, but I don't think it takes advantage of Direct Storage - than again I am hardly well versed in the tech. I wouldn't be surprised if Direct Storage will become mandatory - fast streaming is the thing that makes new console stand out. Once devs start designing core features that will require direct storage to work, PCs might require the same. I am curious how new Ratchet and Clank will work on PC. When it released it's Rift mechanic was meant to work because of PS5 super quick loading only. -

Doesn't Direct Storage require newer NVMe SSD? -
So far Watcher has been powerless to do anything and the world has been shaped by forces more powerful than any individual. Giving player major adjency over "fixing" the situation would mean the end of progressing the world. I think, whoever we will play as, we might have just as much as in how we are going to fix the world, as we did on how we broke it. The only thing in favour of Watcher is him knowing the secret, and that secret might not be very secret very soon, if Eotha's plan succeeds as he hoped. After all he wanted the kith as a whole to figure out the way forward not just the Watcher. Yezuha and its singular God, however, is the big unknown with a lot of questions, and possibly some answers. Watcher could go there. He could also not. Am I the only one who felt like Watcher's presence in PoE2 was completely unnecessary? I felt that if we had someone with personal stake in Deadfire the whole thing would work much better. Afterall, Herald of Berath pretty much overridden our identity at this point.

I find this assumption to be very questionable. It assumes that Avowed was the reaction to Deadfire underperforming, and that it wouldn't happen if Deadfire was smashing success outright. Eora is Obsidian's own universe and there was always interest in expanding it into other project. Josh Sawyer was mentioning a tactical combat game in the universe. I remember Feargus Urquhart talking about Skyrim in Pillars when Deadfire was being crowdfunded, but quick google revealed he was interested in that even earlier. This interview is from 2013, long before Pillars of Eternity was even released: Deadfire sets something up alright, but I also disagree that it sets up another Watcher story. If anything, if Avowed in some for was always planned to be made after PoE2, the ending of Deadfire would make much more sense to me. After all Eothas exposes the big secret to the world and that makes for a great starting point for a different protagonist to be brought up to speed. Hmmm... Woedica's pawn being sent to Living Lands to investigate a misterous soul plague. I am sure it has absolutely nothing to do with .

No. After very combat focused trailer that is what I want to learn more about. Our role seems rather defined, but that doesn't mean that game can't be reactive or deep (alpha protocol). We know that companions will be integral to the story and not be skippable. It seems some player agency is to be more limited than I expected, so I am eager to learn what the upside will be. If it will lean more toward immersive sim, I would be happy with it, but at this point we just really don't know. All the trailer showed is that we can kill things in couple different ways. As far as items go I have found only this quote: "The way we've tried to approach that is erring on the side of fewer but meaningful upgrades." Which is good - I don't want tedius incrimental DPS increases. As far as I know those are all sources of info about Avowed we have: Official Gameplay Trailer Game Overview with game director Carrie Patel PC Gamer preview Post on XBOX site by Feargus Urquhart

Well, no. From games you mentioned only Baldur's Gate1&2 has focus on the story. There have been roumors flowing around that Avowed was meant to have coop feature, but it was scrapped when the game was rebooted. All very vague and unconfirmed so don't take it as a fact. I am more than happy with Avowed being singleplayer. I really don't want another Redfall. Don't won't to be too hostile, but I think you will find most of Obsidian's established fanbase to be resistant to the idea of coop play. Their games have been traditionally a singleplayer, story rich affairs, and that's what I am here for. Coop is all good (Larian makes excellent coop RPGs) but it is a very different experience. As such, I didn't care much for Divinity: Original Sin 1&2.

Or take off. Pick your pun. -
There is a brief interview with Carrie Patel in XBOX Extended Showcase: Nothing really groundbreaking and most of it was mentioned in written reviews but: 1) there will be returning characters from PoEs (Deadfire especially) - I suppose that would suggest the game takes place after PoE2, though I assumed that to be the case, due to Aedyr invasion of Living Lands being teased in PoE2 DLC3. 2) Narrator from the trailer is Kai one of the first companions you meet 3) You are not a Watcher but have a unique soul connection (?) 4) The game will consist of interconnected open zones - game is similar in size to Kotor2 or OuterWorlds. I wonder if we will have some kind of world map and travel from place to place (ala. PoE1) or will those maps attempt to create more of a feeling of an open world.

How is the 5 hours spread? Is it in one chunk? Is it many few awesome times spread between 45h of meh? -
If I remember correctly they were pretty open with First Person only for Outer Worlds and people still didn't accept it. I don't know if there is a question to be addressed - it's been advertised as a First Person game from its inception. I don't think you want to list all the things your game doesn't have when you promote the title. I am sure they could spend entire interview listing things Avowed doesn't have, but that's not really helpful to anyone.

Or maybe Baldur’s Gate3 will do very well, and Microsoft will say: “Oi Obsidian, could you do for us a top down AAA Pillars of Eternity game?” ah, one can dream.

Actually the game broke even after 18 months. It seems the game kept selling after that. Great. For all its faults PoE2 deserved better than it initially got.

He did indeed say "very profitable". Well, Obsidian, where is my PoE3? No excuses now.

Newly opened Avowed steam page still describes Avowed as "first-person fantasy RPG". So my guess would be no. From https://www.pcgamer.com/avowed-rpg-obsidian-preview-magic-interview/

I suppose heavy abstraction of stat driven cRPG makes it easier to add breath. For example a difference between melee weapons in PoE2 will come down to damage rolled, PEN threshhold, recovery time and modal. In first person action RPG you need a unique and satisfying swing with appropriate hitbox etc. If Avowed will have decent melee combat with variety if weapons that already will be impressive. Even if you diffirenciate each weapon in statistic it is not something that will be easily felt in gameplay. So yeah, I do think adding variety to an action combat is much much more difficult. In general action-RPG seems to me like the most tricky combination you could try to do - I am surprised how popular it is, considering (in my opinion) how rare it is for it to turn out well. One one hand you have input driven action combat, and on the other you want stat/perk based customisation. Those tend to go completely against each other. And I think the whole point of Avowed is to have a wider appeal than underperforming PoE1&2 so simplification goes hand in hand.

Oh, PC Gamer show was such a slog I somehow missed that Shadow Gambit got a release date and demo coming next week! -
I agree overall. I try to decouple my personal expectation with it being at least somewhat tied to PoEs with what Avowed is meant to be, but it is not easy. It is a new IP for a reason. I do have some questions as to how much of an RPG it really is. With a set role, what seems like combat heavy gameplay and non-skippable companions it sounds to me more like action game if potential light RPG elements rather than what I would consider an action RPG. I am mostly disappointed as I hoped Avowed to be THE RPG from Obsidian - while it seems they have been moving away lately from player driven RPGs in favour of more focused genres with a touch of Obsidian narrative.
