Ah, thank you, I missed that detail. By the way, was the cataclysm the huana refer to the same one that was causes by a piece of Ionni Brathr falling into the sea? i figured the cataclysm that the huana were referring to was a two parter, related to the creation of the god mechanism and the initial destruction of ukaizo, figured the engwithans thought why stop with murdering our own people, why not consume our allies as well (cataclysm act1 -- ukaizo's people consumed by god vampire entities), and the whole super-storm weather what-have-you (cataclysm act 2 conjure surging super hurricanes) was to erase the evidence, and prevent kith from entering ukaizo and messing with reincarnation or their meal ticket. though, just don't know what the timing might look like, assuming any of that is correct.

In Defense of the Story

Well that's the thing, RPG's often give the illusion of choice. Just when done well you as the player don't notice. Let's look back at Obsidian's RPG's. Baldur's Gate 1/2, you get to make your character, choose their class, their sex, race, all this fun stuff. As long as you understand you are Gorion's Ward, you grew up in Candlekeep, Imoen and Sarevok are your half siblings, and you are the son of the former god of murder. Note how only those set things will ever be used as actual story beats, not whether you choose to be an elf for example. Eternity 1, you can choose basically every aspect of your character. Even what you were doing up to the game starting. Once the game starts though? You are the Watcher, you had a past life where you had a relationship with a revolutionary named Iovara, and you worked for Thaos Ix Arkanon as an inquisitor, and you used to be an Engwithan. Note how only the set parts of your character ever come up as actual story beats. How about Morrowind, a game so well built you can literally kill story critical NPC's and the game just lets you know you can't win anymore. You can control all aspects of your backstory, total control. Except for the fact that you will be a prisoner of the empire (Elder Scrolls Trope, I think only Daggerfall avoided it), and you are the reborn soul of Nerevar the greatest Dark Elf hero to ever live. I give you one guess about what comes up in story beats of the game? Even in a good old table top game, you are still more than likely fighting against a group, or individual. A good GM just finds a way to give your character buy in for that conflict. I even once played in a really great DnD campaign where the Antagonist was in fact the person we were working for, we just didn't know it at the time. So even though we never ended up in some sword fight to the death, they were clearly our "opposing force" and had the campaign continued I imagine eventually we would have had to fight them on some level. it's been so long since i've played baldur's gate 1 or 2... so long in fact that i can't really remember it. and now i have a craving for buldur's gate. does anyone know if any of those remakes turned out to be anything resembling decent? i've heard a lot of horror stories saying hel no. -
the only thing i came up with was that the ancient huana had their own god Ngati (whatever it was, maybe something akin to a supped-up water dragon or something similar), and perhaps it died with ukaizo, and ondra only took the name for some reason? though that still doesn't make much sense, i admit.

i actually think it's the sword of the watcher, however, until you identify it, it's called i believe the ordinary sword. i keep looking for it to show in my inventory and i always seem to miss it. till i've got swords that are fully upgraded or soulbound and completely unlocked. does anyone know what event specifically produces it?

I read that (on the wiki) . Why did he interfer though ? the wiki doesn't say .. edit: oh and why after he got crushed by the moon , she sort of celebrated honoring him ? shouldn't she be pissed instead , he got in the way of her throw ? abydone was all about creation & preservation, and well, wiping-out an entire civilization was a tad to much for his taste.

Deadfire vs Tyranny
Casper replied to rone's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
could you elaborate? i found the combat system enjoyable, till about my first character's 4th NG+ playthrough when even the lightest armored enemies had ridiculous amounts of armor protection. barik and the rebel path i grant you, that would be a bit jarring. the rest of it? i don't see it. eb for instance. in my opinion that final fight you had with her near the beginning (the final stage of the beginning, oh, whatever) of the game broke her, she has seen that fighting against the tide is hopeless (as this is what the 3rd time resistance proved to be futile to her), and she is more concerned with survival, unless you're a fairly/somewhat decent fatebinder, then i get the idea she actually likes you and is actually loyal, instead of simply afraid of you (though i've never been a strictly evil for the sake of evil type of player, especially in tyranny). well, this was to be the end of their campaign of conquest. for that entire section of the of the pregame setup they were sabotaging each other and trying to gain the upperhand, and gain the prestige of seizing final victory. by the point post invasion and conquest when we actually get involved with their little spat they've already been provoking each other for weeks, or even months. i have no trouble seeing the characters devolving a bit into somewhat childish snickering. (also they were bitter enemies for what centuries before that?) well, would you have preferred to hold the line wihth your party against endless spawns of marauding whelps while your allies went in to finish off the next leg of the mission, and likely fail, leaving you to deal with hordes of whelps biting at your heals as you're trying to finish a boss battle (actually that does sound like fun)? i kind of feel like you might just be looking for excuses to nitpick here, perhaps? in regards to the language... couldn't disagree with you more here. this isn't old england, nor is it earth (at least that we know of), it's quite likely that they are talking an some ancient, alien, and unintelligible dialect but to make things easy on us they have "auto translated" the dialogue so we could understand it. well, whatever. we choose to disagree i guess. in my opinion most/all of the oldwalls sections were integral to the entire plot... how are they shoehorned in? i honestly disagree with just about every point you made, but like i said earlier... variety, life, spices... add heat, sizzle and stirfry. -
Does it really matter whether a unique is legendary or not when you can easily get enough money to upgrade them to legendary late game? Money yes, not so sure about the materials. however, i could never seem to find enough pyrite to upgrade a lot of my gear to exceptional, let alone superb or beyond.

Deadfire vs Tyranny
Casper replied to rone's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
i guess i can't argue with that assessment... don't know though. something seems off, but i can't put my finger on it. well, whatever. ---edit i guess i should make it clear that i was referring to the fact that tyranny was designed to be viewed from a modern perspective, and objectively the main factions the player interacts with from the beginning are supposed to be seen as evil. so that basically renders farther debate rather pointless. *sigh* and here i was hoping for a lively discussion... why does logic have to ruin everything? -
Deadfire vs Tyranny
Casper replied to rone's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
i just think it's a tad... tilted to judge the evil/good of a military or a military doctrine using modern measurements when these actions take place in an iron age world. things change, values change. etc. -
Deadfire vs Tyranny
Casper replied to rone's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
When the Scarlet Chorus takes a village, they do 'the culling'. Every able-bodied man, woman, and child is given a weapon and told to murder their family or be murdered by the Chorus. Those who survive, join the Chorus. The Chorus is known to loot, murder, and rape anybody they feel like during the conquering stage prior to the culling. Kyro's Peace doesn't cover people who aren't part of the Empire, so there are *no* rules limiting what they can do to the people their conquering--and you find out this is a thing that happens very early on, if you have the Scarlet Chorus take Lethians Crossing and you get the line "The Scarlet Chorus flooded Lethian's Crossing with overeager and undisciplined recruits. In the first few days of occupation, settlers suffered under rampant theft, murder, rape, and arson." I don't know how you could think the Scarlet Chorus are "fairly good guys". It's literally a horde of murderous, rapist thugs handed weapons and shoved at Kyros's enemies. i'm not saying i agree with the practice or anything, but marauders have been a staple in warfare from pre-history up to the american civil war. and they're still seen in small numbers and isolated conflicts or even a part of mainstay modern military forces in a diluted form (such as unrestricted warfare), such measures are still in use as an acceptable modern military doctrine. --edit reworked some dialogue (getting tired i guess) -
if it served some purpose other than OMG look! pick door one to literally become a god in your own right.

would the god actually be the watcher though or some new being that includes the watcher's soul? or could one even ascend to godhood without becoming a "mechanical" ideal? or without building the foundation of said ideal or whatever?

I just find the whole concept of "destroy everything and replace it with nothing" really uninteresting. He's a suitable wildcard for when/if they decie to end the series. I also think the pantheon has too many gods associated with death in some way. well, they are kind of soul sucking vampire gods. i would be surprised if they all didn't have a hand in it in some fashion. ---edit typo

Casper replied to Grimo88's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
we are probably more like Nemnok or Concelhaut in their pet form to Eothas than a proper antagonist xD i can't really argue with that... however, i suppose it's not just the player character but the gods that sent him/her. so perhaps? -

I would argue that giving player a set antagonist in an RPG is detrimental to the idea of the genre. If you are asked to create a character, and therefore his goals and ideals, it also should be up to you to pick an antagonist (or not pick one). Giving the player a set antagonist (you are against this guy and here is why) dramatically limits your ability to roleplay. Enemies define you. If the antagonist of your character is defined, so you must to be pre-defined by the game. The brilliance of New Vegas is that you can choose who will be your antagonist - and as the result it widens the range of who your character can be and what are his motivations/philosophies. The fact, that Deadfire doesn't have a defined antagonist isnt bad - Eothas provides a hook which forces you to chase him, however, he doesn't define your motivations (is it curiosity, revenge, faith, self-interest, "I don't care but would rather not die). But: 1) We don't get much chance to express/define our motivations for following Eothas. 2) Choosing our antagonist of choice (faction leader) feels rather contrived and unsatisfying. I didn't really oppose RDC and I certainly didn't oppose Huana - they become obstacles in my way. Maybe after all, faction leaders aren't your antagonist - but that makes the finale feel more like "oh, it's unfortunate you force me to kill you" rather than the conclusion of the ongoing conflict. Not enough hostility to make it "the antagonist fight" moment, not enough simpathy to make it "that's really tragic we have to do this out" moment. wait... does that mean that in the scope of this story... the protagonist is eathos.. and we (the player) is the antagonist? -

I don't know if I should make an old man joke or a druggy joke. Flip a coin and assume I said one of them. why pick just one, when you can use both and apply twice the damage? or, combine them, there has to be an old hippy joke someone's been saving somewhere? -
i loved rymrgand in this game. even though my fourth character used the aggressive response during that conversation (because she was a formally devout priest of magran, and it was the most incharacter option available for her), though as i wanted to finish the run with this character... i figured for the reload maybe the cold weather would cool her temper. *sigh* i know i completely chickened out.

i wanted to pick Nemnok as my favorite god, but... i just couldn't do it. so hylea was my pick. she seemed to be the least antagonizing of the gods, besides perhaps eathos (well, minus the whole murdering thousands of innocents to get to the end bit, that kind of kills the whole benevolent deity thing for eathos). who do i like the least? well... honestly, i can't name anyone but woedica for that particular role. i mean, why couldn't one of the gods drop a spare moon on her instead of... you know the engwithans, it was the engwithans ondra was trying to crush right? or whoever it was. well, come to think of it i'm not particularly found of ondra, especially after my moon godlike playthrough.
