Graphic bug after the patch 2.01
macadam replied to Frár's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Same here. I tend to look at everything PoE-related through rose-coloured glasses, but that's a bit much even for me. In buildings the pink squares appear in place of the fire effects, as for the outdoors, refer to the image above. I'm going to take a look at my videocard's drivers next. EDIT: Nevermind, I was just being stupid. There are two patches, one for the basegame (~80 MB), the other one (~175 MB) for the expansion. -
combat is kicking my butt
macadam replied to bigfatdan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The update made everything a little harder because the enemy AI now throws all their best spells at you first thing, I've played for months and I'm readjusting still. As others have mentioned, positioning should be done manually, and to add to the tip regarding foods, do make use of scrolls, too (after boosting accuracy), esp. the scroll of paralysation. Also play with the auto-pause options a bit, as that will automatically pace the fight and will keep you from getting overwhelmed. Good luck! -

Thanks for explaning, makes a lot of sense if put that way. Well his name IS Aloth ... nvm, shutting up Yeah teleporting to your wizard is their favourite pastime, I either put an off-tank next to him or just swap armors so that Eder gets targeted instead. I'm still fairly high level before braving the Temple in any case, because shades are generally terrible. -

Although I wouldn't touch any game's multiplayer with a ten foot pole, I'm still curious as to how you think it could *ruin* the game rather than benefit from it? I agree with you, mind but I'd still like to know. -
Least Liked Companions
macadam replied to Primislas's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Nothing about these results is surprising. Eder likes to pet animals and has a brother he can't help but idealize. Kana is very much the teacher's favourite back in school who talks too much. Durance is not supposed to be likeable. Hiravias relies on making innuendos to distract from his gigantic inferiority complex. As for Aloth, he is conflicted without all the angst. That alone is a reason to like him. -

Its replay value stems from narrative content much more than from skill sets, although it's a lot of fun to try out different builds and such. There are no random encounters, so no need for grinding. A 'cheat' I recommend for story reasons is enabling the pointers in brackets for changes in reputation through dialogue choices. I did my first playthrough without and ended up with a deeply shizophrenic character who was both a compulsive liar and known for his honesty. -
In all media, each race is built around a myth. These myths are reinforced each time race comes into play, seemingly arbitrary, e.g. when an elf chastises a dwarf for being willfully ignorant of the former's high culture, a dwarf scoffs at the elves' arrogance or a small hairy humanoid just wants to be left in peace puffing a pipe in front of their rural little home. Doesn't matter if it's LotR or DnD. PoE's attempt at breaking with tradition by putting culture first after centuries of assimilation is very refreshing. Hiravias gets expelled for his spiritshift, not for being an orlan. Aloth is not prone to frolicking, and he prides himself for having become a wizard, not for being an elf. Too many cases in point have used the concept of race as a means to create conflict. Glad to see PoE taking a different route.

Uninstalled after Hardcore
macadam replied to Cakebread666's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Doesn't iron man mode originate from the Diablo games? I thought this involved seeing how far you'd get with whatever restrictions imposed upon your character (no regen/vendors) before dying. Being able to compensate such handicaps through grinding etc seems to contradict this concept of hardcore, to me. As an aside, the engagement system makes combat appear much more static than it actually is, seeing how many ways there are to break engagement. Also, regarding the link Nakia provided, Pillars' hardcore mode or whatever you may call it does exactly what it's supposed to do.- 14 replies

Need some help
macadam replied to Syzmic's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not that far into the game so I can't comment, will try entering DB after Hearthsong. Afaik you should be able to enter. Reloading or loading another save may do the trick.. Will be reporting back. -
white march news
macadam replied to Gromnir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
"Grom" is fine, though. -
Their builds are bad insofar as their stats are all over the place, but the companions themselves are well done imo, given the small budget. While there is no "funny" character as such, none of them is over the top (as in, having cliche revenge fantasies). Minsc was a bit much tbh. Plus, you could always use custom adventurers.

Love the Game But.........
macadam replied to Syzmic's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You don't need to read them or the memorials in tombs, for that matter. These are designed by backers of the Kickstarter campaign and easily spotted by their golden nameplates (and thus avoided). You may ignore them at your leisure or do it like me: Kill them for loot. Your reputation may suffer, though. -
A wild guess, but they don't get Magran. As far as the priestess/the city is concerned, you did your part. Durance notes right away that the very thing she believes in goes straight over her head. It was not Magran herself you dealt with but one of her followers, who is just as susceptible to flattery as the city itself. Reputation does not reflect godly favor. Inscrutability, thy name is woman?

To be fair some areas do have inaccessible locations that require a skill check to unlock (fade out to vignettes of doing a, b or c). Animations of, say a path being revealed are difficult to do right on the hand-drawn maps Pillars has. I could see the loading times quickly becoming a problem if random encounters between two big maps were added.

PLEASE make this game online
macadam replied to XPerNX's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Just so! I bought Pillars right after the first review hit. No regrets since it's almost as if they've read my mind making that game. I won't do so in regards to SCL (misspelled the name), especially if co-op is made their selling point. No interest in MP whatsoever. I really appreciate their missing out on sales for focusing on SP. -
This is strictly a guess on my part but since this is not part of the main quest I doubt that it will be numbered. Thank you. I'll gladly make use of the party AI if only to have it beat me at the opaque combat mechanics I still haven't grasped entirely (put Eder in a doorway and you're set). Fitting, given his wooden shield; likely the devs anticipated it.

Glad you enjoy it, but I'd pay Obsidian to have them not include MP. Legends of the Sword Coast should be just right for you.
