I'm pretty sure you have to take one but you can customize it before you start so that it's something completely different

They are more like archetypes than actual classes as they are just a base and you can branch out in any direction and learn and do everything without class limitations

I think maybe the large beta and early access may have helped in that regard because I haven't had a single issue and I'm on the second map now. A few minor gripes like a very limited spell book because I always play casters but a few cheats later that was no longer an issue.
