  1. Wizard is hardly best choice when it comes to physical strength, melee for example. Out of what picks? Priest and .. priest. What Might represent is just convention - nothing inherently wrong about this or that implementation - and there is no need to invoke bench press. Perhaps Wizard should sit down and play chess or something to hone skill. Anyway .. on topic, I found that Dex is indeed quite important for Wizard who wants to cast fast and casting fast avoids being interrupted along with the benefit of having initiative. Con, well, depending on play style and difficulty but Per and Res seem to be dump stats for me. Deflection is too low anyway and Spirit Shield can negate the penalty to Concentration. If Wizard is getting hit then DR and Con + spell buffs are solution not Per and Res like with other classes who benefit from Deflection more.
  2. What works for me are smaller parties. Easier to manage and from role playing perspective it could also make sense. When I play fighter I hang around healer for example. Also get to know classes and characters themselves more thoroughly. You have tools, use them to your liking.
  3. Just don't worry about it (difficulty level) and play the one that suits you. Whatever everyone does, does not have to concern you. PotD is not meant to walk in, press few abilities and win. Tip on loading screen confirms it. It requires planning and effort, some of the stuff mentioned in OP included.
  4. I do not think I am struggling, its how I play the game. I played BG2 for about year, with every class and different parties or choices, and half before deciding to finish it It was a note whether or not those values for Stealth and Mechanic are needed or not. Mechanic is I assume. You observations about the path to take are in my experience accurate - I do it the same way. Playing solo Wizard PoTD atm about third one. This one has no Per and Res.
  5. I ran melee low Mig and Con Orlan on Hard as crowd control machine. Other stats, including Resolve, maxed except Dex but I do not think its possible to "gimp" cipher much, High Intelligence is essential for cc character for example but it really depends on how cipher is played and what are other members of party. You can max Per if you like no problems. Ciphers have inherit high deflection so you can go that way. Low Mig/Con is not power build it was good enough.
  6. No If you are RPer how does difficulty matter? Setting the game to lowest difficulty probably allows for some YOLO style, but part of PoTD difficulty is knowledge of advanced mechanics, use of buffs or terrain by design else there would be no replay ability.
  7. That seems like standard to me and I've done only this part of the game so far about dozen times Also Mechanic 4 and Stealth 4?
  8. Agreed on the defensive self buffs ... I tried using wizard's double but man that spell blows chunks even for a first level spell. I like having some defensive self buffs on wizards, even if I never use them, just for 'crap I'm engaged' situations, but the ones we have in this patch are not great However, I think OP is correct - some of the AoEs are a little too good. Grasp is better than the god awful touch spells in BG, but it could stand to be even better. Seems to be version of Reflected Image from BG with about the same functionality. Its situational at best. To make it more useful other utility could be added. For example, when destroyed causes small blast or clears poison on cast etc. There is no question some spells are too good, the question is how big of a problem it is. Well, from where I sit. However, greater diversity cant be really bad. btw "never use defensive spells on wizard .." well depending on Wizard. I like my Wizard close to battle mage unless I could get BG Sorcerer and cast Project Image and Wish whole day long. Not even bothering with Time Stop.
  9. That's such a specious argument. Firstly the old IE games were constrained by the D&D ruleset, which has several meaningful implications: the devs didn't have the flexibility to rebalance spells anyways, and that ruleset is designed for higher level abilities to obsolete lower level abilities. PoE has a different design goal where higher level abilities are usually meant to complement lower level ones, not upgrade them. There are some exceptions (missiles come to mind, so do the priest direct heals), but many PoE spells do fall into this design. Fan of flames is not upgraded by fireball, frost blast, or anything else. (I like that, personally.) Instead those spells have trade offs: fireball does not upgrade the damage of fan of flames (in fact it's significantly lower), but it's supposed to have a positioning advantage. That way both spells are useful and remain viable into end game, instead of fireball completely replacing fan of flames like fireball completely (more or less) replacing burning hands in D&D. Secondly when we talk about balance, most of us just mean we want combat gameplay with interesting choices: unbalanced spell design removes or prevents interesting choices. For most of the game (particularly after the early levels where chill fog is comparatively powerful) there is never a valid tactical reason to use any level 1 wizard spell besides Fan of Flames or Eldritch Aim (now that slicken is nerfed - which is not a bad thing because before that happened there was rarely a valid tacitcal reason for using any level 1 wizard spells besides slicken). Most of the people here seem to be arguing that fan of flames has drawbacks due to its positioning that make it inappropriate or less efficient in certain situations, which would be tactically interesting and would would help the case if it were true, but it's not - you can safely and reliably flame just about every combat encounter in the game without complex positioning of any kind. The only time this is notably not true is against teleporting spirits at low levels, and so it seems like a lot of people get an initial impression early on from the gilded vale temple that simply doesn't apply to the rest of the game. Its not an argument, its opinion. If you or anyone else want balance, for whatever reason, that is fine. I use Fleet Feet, Eldritch Aim and Spirit Shield probably as much as Fan of Flames. Do not even have Chill Fog so its no problem for me. The only thing resembling argument was ill comparison.
  10. Upon comparing it with a normal pistol from random loot? It has the exact same garbage stats and the exact same bonuses upon enchanting it (on paper, assuming the figures are right and executed properly), and by the time you have enough money and ingredients to enchant either you should have come across better guns. Given its low selling price these days, the only reason you want to keep the Disappointer is that it is a unique item. Well unless it truly has some other hidden property upon completing all of its enchantments? Not appropriate thread but enchanting has so much wasted potential. Greater character customization might be new to game design in comparison to IE legacy but in this case I cant tell its done well in PoE.
  11. Except that's just flat untrue. The Helm Of Balduran is an end-game ToB item. It was not. It was found in the prologue. What a powerful helm it was. I think the person you are replying to meant that it was a helm that remained viable throughout all chapters of the game, unlike most of the helms here, that are barely viable already, let alone real endgame level 30 stuff. Aha, there goes my reading comprehension. Apologies and forget I said anything then

  13. Always been like this in IE games. In BG2 it was Chromatic Orb and maybe Magic Missiles when loaded into sequencer. - http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/SpellsReference/Main.htm Not sure what competitive multiplayer game has to do with single player remake .. oh wait .. balance. Well, yes not all spells were created equal. No problem for me.
  14. Yeah, but a full party on easy/hard is not really challenging at all. And its not like the story "changes" once you beat the game.. There are a variety of endings and a variety of optional stories with companions, guilds, factions, etc. You may personally dislike the stories or feel there isn't ENOUGH change, but I think that puts you a bit in the minority. Also, this discussion and bringing up Skyrim is pretty far afield from discussing specific tactics in this game, so we should probably end it. If you want 100% reliable, this probably just isn't the game for you -- it's FILLED with dice rolls. Any given enemy could theoretically crit you 10 times in a row. Will it happen? Probably not, but it's not 100% guaranteed as far as I know. Anything you come up with, in a dice-roll DND-ish game, is going to be a probability and not a guarantee. Thanks, I apologize since I didn't realize you could do 4 with lockpicks. I might try making it to the doorway and see if I can tank through the stuns. I'm afraid that once I hit permastun, I won't even be able to use my only regen potions, however, since it seems to be up to luck whether you get a window to use them (every 5-10 seconds a possibility of an attack/item usage). I have said it before, but its possible and reliable to get to level 4 without setting foot in temple. Also, it is possible to split enemies in the said room and kill them 1by1 or in smaller patches. Inn is close. I've done so with level 4 Wizard so it surely is possible. Cleared all rooms in the temple, for loot, except 3 filed with Shades, Shadows and Phantoms. Not sure if its worth coming back. Took me few hours to kill Shulder(?) King one on one for the helm. Interestingly enough the other one went down without much problems - to the ray spell. Did not kill the bears yet though. There is no room to kite and they hit so hard. With cipher it was substantially easier because of recharging stun. I stunlocked everything. With Wizard is much more bother.
  15. I tried to lure the two wolves back in to camp (trying to solo prologue) and it worked alright - the wolves been killed - but it got buggy too - the caravan people could not get out of combat.
  16. It is possible to get spider legs relatively early so its luck. At least as legs go. Are there any in the temple? I have 3 on me at lvl 4 before temple.
  17. did you kill maerwald? what strategy? I did, noting too complex. If he gets caught into antipathetic field he goes down like if he's made of wet tissues. Plus you can paralyze him with mental binding if you're lucky. If you confuse him and you're even more lucky his own elements will gang up on him. So, spells, knight summon and a fair bit of luck. The field melts everything I encountered so far and as you mention in combo with paralyze its tricky but powerful AoE. Also to note that Psychovampiric Shield (+10 deflection basically for free) keeps ticking even when target is gone/dead and even out of combat which does not have to be obvious (was not to me) as per in-game description.
  18. Its possible to hit level 4 without setting foot in the temple. Its also possible to have enough for the figurine about the same time. It is however questionable whether its easier without or with the temple because hitting level 5 before the mentioned boss fights is probably not possible either way. Temple has loot though.
  19. That seems to be the intent, or at least that is how it works out. Its either figurine or several other times. Make choice. The belt is hard to resist .
  20. Indeed, and it is even possible to get 6k needed for the figurine. When I saw it for first time, and what it does, I thought it was good deal. I am sure Obsidian is aware how many "good deals" there were in BG for example so I am not sure why price adjustment was necessary. In my opinion "good deals" could be part of the game as they are not mandatory but offer options. Like soloing or other ways to play. Its single player. Cannot cheat AI. Let people play how they want rather than trying to make it .. challenge .. or chore. I want my Staff of Magi 3 levels out of prison. Skull Trap, MM meteors, figurine .. whatever .. Invisibility on equip oktxbai. Balance at best. Who cares?
  21. Someone with some rationalization capabilities help me out here --- the description page says might represents "physical or spiritual strength". A small elf character having a ton of brute force doesn't fit, but maybe I could consider it something else? It might seem a bit silly getting hung up on this, but I don't know, it helps me get into the experience more ya know? I will help you out. Its false dichotomy. Dualism is dead. Might basically means that character is kick ass. Small characters can be kick ass no problem.
  22. Hearth Orlan Mig 2 Con 3 Dex 16 Per 19 Int 19 Res 19 I run her with 0 DR on Hard level 5 with Stiletto/Hatchet at the moment. Its not glass cannon its just glass. Due to low damage output I use her to initiate, troll, interrupt and cc - set up fights. Play her like rogue with flanking. There seems to be MIN damage of 1(?) with talent giving +2 Focus on hit (which I do not have yet) I wonder what her focus generation will be later on. First perk "Fast runner" and second "Two weapon style". Crits at 152/419. Deflection, without buffs, 4 points shy of Edér. It was test build at first but then I found her fun and continued. I should probably put some armor on her but there is no need yet. She is fast and has team.
