RPGCodex Review #1 - Hŵrpa Dwrp
dododad replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
While I agree with the assessment that story as bland and uninspiring, same can be said about this 'review'. It's badly written, has mistaken information and is plain wrong at times. QUOTE: Dexterity looks important at first because it gives you “action speed”, which governs the efficiency of actions (very useful for some mages and gunners) and the delay between them, but soon you realise that most of that is overshadowed by the armour recovery modifier anyway. WRONG: In fact dexterity is THE most important attribute for casters, and vital also to anyone not into tanking QUOTE: Perception is probably the least useful of the bunch, as it affects a character’s interrupt rate – interrupts are coin toss rolls that can delay an interrupted character’s action slightly. WRONG: Probably? Oh, he didn't touch POTD, riiiiight. And he doesn't even know what it does to various wall spells. Anyway, complaining about dump stats is completely pointless, when all infinity games that he so loved, had bracelet's of dexterity and ogre might, making it possible to dump everything out of these two stats. QUOTE: The druid is good at everything and overshadows all other casters, the priest would be good if buff spells didn’t suck and the endurance/health system wasn’t broken, and the wizard got terribly shafted. The druid can heal, do damage, buff everyone, debuff, drop some crowd control and summon elementals, he’s also decent in a fight due to shapeshifting. Compare that to the priest that melts in any melee, whose damage spells are lacklustre, and who can drop a few buffs before standing in a corner and being useless. WRONG: I'm not even going into this one. It's actually Priest>Wizard>Druid, but don't tell him that. QUOTE: There are four difficulty settings – easy, normal, hard, Path of the Damned. I can’t say I can recommend any of them. The differences between easy-hard are the amount of monsters you face. PotD, on the other hand, sums the monsters of all three difficulties and increases their stats by 50%. Granted, I only played hard, but I simply can’t see PotD being anything other than annoying as hell. ASSUMPTION: So, we are ranting based on what we think? QUOTE: This is literally the worst Obsidian game I’ve played to date. ARROGANCE: You can't honesty be as arrogant to call it the worst Obsidian game, you can't. And finally he goes into spent tirade about engagement system, the one that finally fixed old and broken "running around with boots of speed/hasted" from old engine. I'd quote it all, but don't want to spoil my whole post. It's too dirty, baseless and pathetic in scope. -
Too Easy?
dododad replied to Veradrox's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You know, my friends from Uni who played it the found game to be hard on hard and extremely punishing on PotD. Since they are actually studying engineering i have a hard time thinking of them as lobotomized idiots. I bet they don't know how to play the game then. All you have to do is enable autopause after each ability is cast, then just spam them into oblivion. -
You want dirty old man to **** a female half his size, who most probably hates him for purges he committed against followers of her faith?

So, the plot.
dododad replied to Stargazer86's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
They honestly underdeveloped main story to a level where subplots of Eothas and Magran became the most interesting parts of it. The big bombshell that Gods are Engwithan construct falls completely flat in delivering a closure to the game. It's not that it isn't trying to be grand and meaningful, it just doesn't achieve that. There is a fine line in epic and pathetic, and I believe they actually crossed it. Pc and party reactions feel forced, scripted to a degree, and what's most important, unbelievable. Most of them are fully rooted in their believes, and then with a simple reveal everyone quickly and fully changes their opinions. Even tho, that's exactly what didn't happen to PC in his first life. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't work. Given a sooner reveal, and some more time for pc and party to deal with it, it could be managed, but as it is, it feels completely forced. Anyway, forgetting all that Thaos and Iowara nonsene, I'll also go into speculating about the interesting part of the story. Eothas, and Magra. Game tells us that Waidwen was going bananas and was spreading chaos in Readceres, making Dyrwoodans afraid of open war, but they are also curiously vague as to who actually invaded who. In Dyrwood it's commonly known that it was an invasion, but are we completely sure that it was Readceres that invaded first? We learn of no Redcerean account, there is a curious decision to switch sides by Eders brother, and Webb also talks about 'keeping terrifying' truths from the people. So we go by two books and both are interesting: 1. Eothas marched on Dyrwood (did he actually invade?) 2. Dyrwood rallies at Halgot/Godhammer and attacks him in Readceras. (why, isn't he in Dyrwood? is Dyrwood the one staring the war?) 3. Readceres invades Dyrwood through White March, uncontested by locals at first. (why uncontested? retribution for invasion of Readceras?) Again nothing to say who started the war. The cause is said to be flight of Readcerans into Dyrwood, but part about war starting with spread of dominion is again vague. That dominion can be understood as invasion, or it can only be religious subversion. Rallying at Halgot is again curious. Why rally at the border of the invading country if you are already invaded? What's obvious is that there was a religious conflict between Eothas and Magra. We learn very little about the causes of it. Waidwen goes crazy and starts destroying temples. End makes it almost certain that it was Eothas working through Waidwen to do that, but the causes are again obscured. Did he as Engwithan construct rebels against that idea and is in turn he the one attacked by Magra, who may be in league with Woedica as well, to hide it? -

Ok so welcome to the SPOILER FORUM TO YOU TOO. Some people are really daft- Yeah, like the ones getting riled up by two week old posts... -
I had Kana initiate conversation after I killed Od Nua in second to last level in Endless Paths, that was before 1.04 patch. Then I left the final boss till I levelupped, patched the game, killed him, and I got the same conversation with Kana. Now I don't know if I was ment to have a different conversation, maybe about killing a dragon, or game just mistakenly threw the previous in again.

Two-handed Axe petition
dododad replied to Phant's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm fully against it implementing just based on warped fantasy setting. It's so refreshing seeing polaxes and pikes instead. Then again, two handed axes did exist in middle ages. They did not see a lot of use, but they did play a role in last trial by combat in France. Curiously, they were used as mounted weapons in this case, and discarded in favour of longsword while on foot. -
Wizard suggestion
dododad replied to Ouroboros226's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Repulsing Seal + 10 in mechanics skill. You really don't want to know what this does. But I fully agree that three caster classes begin to shine later in the game. In my mind they actually become three most powerful classes for harder difficulties since they are the only ones that can effect the numbers of critters thrown at you. -
Bounty: Songsmith Roska

Didn't have a lot of backtracking to do, so I checked it and I can confirm that it works. Thanks. -

Same here. I had the same looping Edder quest that prevented this one into kicking in. It's a nasty bug since it closes further Warden quests! I found a way to 'fix' it. - Install IE mod. - type 'forceadvancequest data/quests/06_stronghold/06_tsk_boss_chanter.quest' - add his head into your inventory 'additem quest_item_head_chanter 1' - now return to Warden for rewards, and he'll give you new bounties It's important not to force-advance the quest twice, It'll register as competed, but will still bugout Warden from giving you further quests. -
EI Mod and my opinions

No, actually that's not what I said, but thanks being a **** about it in trying to interpret things your own way. -
EI Mod and my opinions
dododad replied to Mdalton31's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Damn, that's a lot of downloads ! How come only a handful of people posted on the mod thread to thank Bester for his work though? I believe the main reason he stopped working on his mod is that he didn't enjoy PoE that much... but it sure would have been nice for him to get a bit more support/thank you's. I mean, the modding thread was really slow on this forum. It's up to 21,523 downloads as of this post. Over 3,000 new unique downloads in the last 4 days (I'm one of them). I don't think it does much good to flood a comments section with 'Thank yous'. The modding threads on this forum are a bit scattered and suffering a bit I think from a lack dedicated forum for modders (yo moderators, give us a dedicated modding sub-forum please). Many people are likely unaware where that thread even is (I'm not even sure where the primary thread is, is it on these forums? RPGCodex's? Elsewhere?), not to mention many people don't come to the forum at all. As an aside, Nexus mods itself leaves a lot to be desired. I really wish a better mod hosting site like Curse was used. For what it's worth, I'm appreciative of the work that everyone who is behind the mod put into it. I have a clue how much work that is, and it's quite a lot. Thank you Bester, Sensuki, Karkarov, and Brandon Wallace. It's unfortunate that Bester and Sensuki are retiring, but I totally understand why. I certainly wouldn't put all those download as people that like changes. I for one only installed it to bump my difficulty up to potd, nothing else. I'm not touching engagements, and I'm not touching other changes that it introduces because I think game plays better without them. -
This is my main issue with Durance. I know his story is quite valuable i terms of exposition, however, the spending time with the group requirement is putting me off, as I had plans for a custom priest of my own creation. Otherwise I could just pull off a bioware and keep him in the Stronghold and just do his quests here and there. For first two chapters you only need him until he gets a 'dream sequence' (you'll know when you get it), after that you can safely put him into Stronghold, and in 3rd he should be a proper powerhouse, so you can safely place him along your priest to double the effect.

Trials of Durance bug?
dododad replied to AntitheistPOV's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You haven't unlocked your stronghold jet, right? If that's the case just continue playing, he should be available there. -
Has anyone found a use for Paladins resurrection ability? It has weird -150 endurance penalty after couple of seconds, making it hardly usable on squishy characters for most of the game, and since those are the ones that get knocked out, it makes it hardly usable at all. But, besides that I also consider Paladins the worst class of them all. What I particularly dislike, is their poor weapon specialization selection. I don't think they deserve full Fighters specializations, but just give them one of them.

Yes, he was a historian from the middle of the 15th century whose work had some really amazing woodcuts, and like a great number of historians in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries his work was based on the limited sources available to him at the time. Specifically, that's the Battle of Kappel. I'm surprised your not pulling out the Pavia work, either, considering that it *actually* shows a dude with a great sword hacking at a dude with broken pike. Seems that would be even better for your claim. But then there's artwork like the frescos at the Sala de Giovanni Delle Bande Nere, that show two-handed words fighting pikes using a guarded stance where sword blocks the hit, and the slides along the shaft while they charge forward. The myth--and that's all it is, myth and legend--of two-handed swords being used to chop down walls of pikes comes, via your historians, from one sentence written in 1522: ""...stood in the first rank, swung his sword and fought like a woodsman who was felling an Oak in the forest..." Exactly what you see effectively done in modern medieval reenactements. I don't know if you got your info from some outdated history book or equally outdated history teacher somewhere, but current views on the matter have changed considerably. And that book is just one of the components in supporting the view of twohanders used in battling pike walls. Comparative representation of arms used in battles in no small way comes exactly from those depictions. For example, Bayeud Tapestry is still the standard for Norman weaponry of the time. And it was made couple of centuries before any of your King Arthur etchings became popular. Even religious frescoes offer amazing insight into the period. They often show arms and armour from the period they were painted in, and are one of the rare visual representations of the time, so I stay firmly by my assessment of Chronik as representative. Anyway, since you still refuse to quote a single modern article, I'll consider this discussion closed. I'll only offer this last article written by an expert on the period, to maybe shed some light on your ignorance. I assume you read German, otherwise just autotranslate the last part into English: https://portal.dnb.de/opac.htm?method=simpleSearch&cqlMode=true&query=idn%3D994645821

Yes, just sidestep my request for naming your sources. As for that picture that you continue to clam as a legend. It comes from Chronik des Johannes Stumpf, and Johannes Stumpf was not a fairy tales writer, but a perfectly respectable historian. You have a full scan of it here: http://www.e-rara.ch/id/1525949
