Please bring back the pencil drawings of items
kat7ra replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Might be to late, might not be what the devs want, but I'd say +1 to the OP Specially the special named weapons would be nice with a scetch or full fledged drawing. Then again I'm probably biased, being a huge comic book and painting/drawing fan, carsomyr had such great art, might still be one of my fav swords of all time. And a simple scetch can be so detailed, and look so good. -
Melee mage - viable?
kat7ra replied to Snerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
From my limited BB experience, and knowledge of the game so far, I'd say the introduction of newly made classes kinda "fill up" those multiclass roles that we sometimes rolled before, while we do have the freedom to make whatever char we want, I do not believe everything is viable. And even if they implement different classes to fill the fighter/mage roles and such, (paladin is basically that for cleric/fighter anyhow in DnD) they can't fill the roles of Fighter/mage/rogue tripple classed characters that could basically do the job for a whole party, or the mage/fighter power houses, or even the cleric/mage toolbags. It's a different system, so making the "fighter/mage" might not be viable, and you might have to find other tweaks. But keep on trying! And if you succeed it would be great, I do love my spellblades ^^ -
Stronghold worries
kat7ra replied to archangel979's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In my oppinion the stronghold of NWN2 was really good and fun for the majority of it's existence, and as you pointed out, fell flat at the end with no real consequences. I had a blast with it while doing it though, but the end felt rushed imo, it was the same thing with ME3, the building of your strength was fun, but the execution at the end was short, boring and had little real counsequences. So I do agree with your worries, but I do not agree that they were bad, it's just the aftertase that was bad. It's like reading a good book, and then the ending is bad, it doens't make the whole book bad, but it's the last part and what sits with you the longest. IMO, if they develop further on the NWN idea of a stronghold, and then add some importance to it later on in the game, it will be a TON of fun, so for me NWN2 is more of a "first proper try" and now that they've seen what was good and what was bad, they have an easier time to make it better. SO! NWN stronghold being flawed is in my oppinion a reason to believe that this one will be better, and since it doens't need to be improved all that much, I have a good amount of faith in them doing it right. -

Imho the IE games were not hard to grasp, to master it takes some playing though. My first experience with these kind of games were BG1, and as a 10 year old kid, who had just started reading English it was a huge challenge, but I still plowed through, though the last boss was kinda hard with a party of level 4 characters. But even with language barriers and relatively little gaming experience compared to todays kids it wasn't impossible. BUT, the game is not made for kids, writing, difficulty level and pacing it's all made for a more adult audience, and for an audience that is willing to read... a lot. If you're not willing to spend a lot of time reading in these kind of games, then it's not made for you. If you are willing to read a lot, then the IE games are plenty accessible for anyone, they're just not fast games, it takes a while to get rolling, both your understanding and the game itself. For me though, this is probably 50 % or more of the charm, and one of the main reasons I prefer BG1 over BG2, the slow steady pace that rarely goes into "epic" mode, but keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's actually a lot like Dark souls in the feel of the game, it's very dark at points, and you feel small and insignificant at times, but when you manage to beat those mages, or that assasin for the first time, it is SO so so rewarding. And like DS when you get to know the game and it's mechanics you can start doing speed runs, or perfect runs, and all the enemies are dust in front of your eyes, but you never forget the feeling of being small and weak, and for me, that ment never losing respect for the game. It thought me so much about English, tactics, problem solving and storytelling and I really felt like I mastered the game after hours upon HOURS of gaming. While a lot of todays games are mastered in a fraction of the time I needed for BG1. TL:DR IE games are awesomer than new games, don't change the spirit of the game because ppl have forgotten patience. -

I must say I agree with your Girlfriends complaints the exploration is nice though, haven't had as much fun exploring a new world since my first WoW experience. -

You misunderstood me a little I never had said that devs should try to appeal to broader audience and the like, it would be a severe mistake for kickstarted project. I just wanted to point out that any additional sales they can make shouldn't be considered "a bonus" but a profit that could and should be expected from the very beginning. As for expenses of running the company, I don't think we can get anywhere with all that theoretical talk without knowing real state of affairs in Obsidian's account department. What do you say? I say I totally agree, and couldn't have said it better myself. It is fun to theorize though ^^ -

Cannot agree with you on that one. Game development is a tricky thing from teamwork point of view. People who were heavily engaged in a project on its pre-production and early production stages have literally nothing to do with it when a project closes to an end. So they need another project to work on long before the first one is done. That, or get fired. inXile, for instance, did exactly that - kickstarted Wasteland 2, then when it was half done kickstarted Torment. I don't know if anyone except Fargo could succeed in that, really. Passion for making games is all very well (very, very, VERY well) but if you're running company and hope to stay in business breaking even is not enough. Yeah, I know the problems of video game developing, and it depends how many of the staff is permanent or hired for a project basis as well. Or how many have several roles instead of one specialised role. I do want Obsidian to make money on this, and the more sales the better, but from a Kickstarter point of view it won't last if they end up making a game that is more tailored to the crowd that didn't back them, than the cowd that backed them. Also, breaking even is in theory enough to run a company, as long as there is no debt you have to pay off, but for that to happen you need to already be an established company that can found yourself for supplies and paychecks, and when you sell what you produce you go back up to the saved amount you started with. The idea that a business have to make a profit to be viable isn't really true, it has to make a profit if it has backers that looks to get it's money back though. but if you own a shop and break even then you don' have to make a profit, as long as you cna pay for supplies and your own paycheck. but you need to have the capital to make it go full circle. -

Actually, they dont need to sell, thats the point of kickstarter jesus christ Feed the devs while they make the game so they could make it while earning their living without being dependant upon special interest parties like the publisher. Any copies it sells is just a very nice bonus Okay. I know you think that evil companies are run by evil, evil spirits or ghosts or whatever that can inhabit our bodies if we don't get enough colon cleanses or whatnot, but do you know how companies work? They need to make money to stay existent. Obsidian is working off loss right now. Every single copy rewarded through the Kickstarter is a loss. That's the harsh truth. I don't know if I agree with that though. Since every copy "rewarded" through kickstarter is paid for. there is no company behind Obsidian that is looking for their money back/doubled/trippled. No big companies are not evil, but they work for different reasons then (hopefully) Obsidian. Where Obsidian has a game they want to develop and a vision for that product, EA would give a rats ass about any vision, a slong as it makes money. Is this evil? No, but it's often hurtfull for the fans of lesser known/accasable products. Every sale PoE makes is indeed a bonus, because they've been given X amount of money to make a game, and that is all they have, in return us (The producers) don't demand any money back, and no profit, all we demand is the game. In theory Kickstarter is a way that companies won't have to make a large profit, as long as they manage their budgets. Because it's not kickstart once and then start making a game with the profits you made of your last product. You kickstart, make a game, when the game is done you can kickstart again, but as long as all the employees got paid, and the budget didn't go in the red, it's a success. In theory the "profit" part of the production is taken out of the equation. Maybe that is an idealistic view of it, but I believe that it's at least the original idea behind it. Sure you can kickstart and make a huge success and from the profit start a company and make more products, but it's not needed, a kickstarter success only requires not going over the budget, and a delivery of the product. -
Kevin Michael Richardson
kat7ra replied to kat7ra's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, i was more of a funny thought I had, and it would be fun. Hey, if Pillars becomes a success, maybe they can get em in for the expansion, or sequel -
Kevin Michael Richardson
kat7ra replied to kat7ra's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well, he was the main villain in BG1 and the narrator. When he does his "evil" voice Is till get shivers, as he is incredible good at it. I was talking with a friend and a incredible VA Easter egg would be to have David Warner and Kevin Michael Richardson appear in a scene together as two minor old NPCs, sitting and talking about the old days or something. The two main villains of the two best Infinity engine games would be incredible fun ^^ -
Is there any possibility that this VA will be in the game? Or can be asked to be in the game? Even as an Easter egg this would be amazing. For me he is the voice of IE games, my first proper villain and story teller, and the best so far in my life. Not even sure if this would be the right place to post this though

Uhm, so yeah. Kickstarter games actually don't have to be accesible for most ppl, it's the point of kickstarter. You go around the produces that demand the game to be viable for a huge amount of players, and get the players that like the concept to pitch in. Would I like pillars to ressurect this genre? Sure, but if it can stay alive with kickstarter I don't have the need for everyone playing these kind of games. As long as there are enough of us to keep on kickstarting them. OP: I'd love for you to like and buy this game, and if you play 4x games it shouldn't be a problem. But this is a game founded and made for the fans of a certain type of game, not so that everyone will like it. Anyway, I'm just repeating what other ppl have said already. -
My advice is stay away from DAI. I've been playing it for 30 hours now and the good laughs I got (unintended by the game) are not worth the money, whatever your currency. Well, I thank you for the advice, but my current level of RPG withdrawal is kinda high, and I feel I owe it to Bioware for old times sake to give it a try. I am however of the belief that it is an improved skyrim. As I believe Bioware have had to be able to make more interesting dialogue/combat/story at the very least. And even though I had a lot of issues with skyrim, even after a lot of moding, I still played it for more hours then most games I've bought in the alter years, so as long as I go into it with an attitude of "it's skyrim, only better" I shouldn't be to dissapointed.

Can't agree more. Haven't touched DA:I yet, partly because of PC issues, and party because I don't know if I trust the game to be good, and not a Elder scrolls clone. But buggy releases and bad RPGs getting good reviews (Looking at you Divinity) I'm really clutching one of my last straws of faith with Obsidian here. Living up to the hype some of us feel might be hard, or even impossible, but as log as the game is good I'm going to be happy. If Pillars ends up flopping, I'm just gonna retract into the wave of old games on steam and stop buying new games I think :/ I am hovever INCREDIBLE hyped. and looking foreward to it!
-
It's a lot wasier for the QA testers on their side if we DON'T just add a list of "I found all of this stuff" And it also helps a LOT if all the ppl logging bugs actually use the template :D Looked trough some bugs th other day and it made me cringe just thinking about my poor fellow QA testers having to wade trough that and sort em out
-
So far, it's amazing, tomorrow I will spend more time, and delve more into it. Only minus in the first impression department is that I could find no way in-game to speed up scrolling, not a problem the first hour, but it WILL BE after a while,
-
So agree with this! I had pretty decent hopes for OS, but it really let me down, and that's the reasons, the combat was ok, but after a while it was very repetetive. :/ And yes this game is going to be "like it" but being in the same genre does not mean the same quality.
-
Not like I need to be awake at work anyhow, right?
-
Pfft, D:OS can go back to the box, nothing comes even close to my hype for this. If D:OS is LUCKY, I might pick it up again, if it's nice and don't complain!
