Vital questions about Mass Effect
SteveThaiBinh replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Computer and Console
Well, I hope all questions were answered to the Kaftan's satisfaction? Bye, thread. -
Setting matters (though gameplay matters too). Compare Mulan with Miyazaki's Spirited Away - both have their own interpretation of Chinese and Japanese cultures respectively, but Mulan was a noticeable Westernisation/dumbing down. Spirited Away was just a different take on it, but it found a market and a positive response in the West, I believe. Bioware could yet redeem themselves with JE2, if they could get themselves some different writers, maybe?

Sure. At the bottom right after each post are options, including 'Quote' and 'Reply'. Click 'Quote' so that it turns red, then click 'Reply'. The post you quoted should then appear in the edit window inside quote tags: [ quote ] [ /quote ] (but without the spaces.) Yes, and a dafter and less practical weapon there has never been, surely. How did he die - sliced off a couple of major limbs, did he?

A google search suggests it's unlikely to be a Kotor 2-related problem, more likely to be related some other software you installed (or that installed itself) recently. Possible solutions here and here. Give it a try, and let us know if any of them work.

I'm hopeful that if JE2 comes out on XBox, it will come out on PC later like Jade Empire Special Edition did. There's absolutely no guarantee of that, of course, so I suppose it depends on how well it worked (in terms of profits) for the first Jade Empire, and who gets to make the decision - I don't know if Microsoft has as much control over JE as they do over ME.

It is. And as the Jemima Khan piece I posted earlier pointed out, there is a tendency when someone dies to dwell on their good points rather than give a balanced account of their achievements. Nevertheless, if Bhutto stirred up anti-Indian sentiment in Pakistan, I doubt she was unique in doing so.

Dragon Age + Mass Effect 2 + Jade Empire 2 + Unknown LucasArts project + Sonic RPG + Kotor MMO? What busy little BioBees they will be...

It's a lengthy and engrossing game, very much worth the time.

Having played the game through a second time, I tend to agree with you that it's more clearly signposted than I noticed my first time. For me, the thing that stood out most was the way he throws Geralt's old advice back in his face. I also noticed this time that if you tell Alvin he'll get a dog, he gets a dog in Murky Waters (he didn't my first time through) - this I think warns you to pay attention to what you say to Alvin and expect it to be relevant later on.

I used Netscape Navigator when I first got the internet in 1995, I think. I'm not even sure Internet Explorer existed then. We stuck with Netscape as long as we could, but in the end were browbeaten by Explorer's constant insistence on installing itself.

When Bastila is unloved, we all lose.

Is it finally here? The death of the fantasy genre?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Computer and Console
Is melee combat with a sword really an effective and realistic method of de-ratting a room? -
They look so sanitised - all straight lines and geometric shapes and greys and none of it looks lived in or used at all. I think 'it's a military base and/or research facility' is getting a little old as an excuse for why this doesn't look like a place that has ever been used or visited by people. This is why I liked the graphics of The Witcher so much.

Here's a rather good piece of balance to all the (perfectly understandable) praise that's been heaped on Bhutto's shoulders the last few days. Bear in mind that the author is the former wife of one of Bhutto's political opponents and critics, but nevertheless, it's an interesting read I think.

Aah, Pavel. Poor Pavel. I really wanted a Pavel cameo in NWN2, and not just the re-use of his soundset for Bevil, either.

As an aside, where do you get reliable data on sales figures? I've never found a good source, not even on the all-knowing internet. -

Be careful what you wish for. If Fallout 3 is a huge commercial success, brace for the arrival of a dozen clones using the same post-apocalyptic setting with minimal creativity. You may find yourself looking back at these fantasy-sodden times as the 'good old days'. -
I can not move in game, help!
SteveThaiBinh replied to Razer Rage's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
If your card doesn't meet the official minimum requirements for the game, there's not a lot you can do except get a new video card. I've never owned a laptop, so I don't know how easy it is to do that - is there space? For a desktop PC, very cheap budget video cards will now play Kotor 2 quite well. I don't think that just updating the drivers would make any difference, but you could try. -
Agreed. Aexcrucius sounds like 'excruciating' as in 'excruciatingly daft'. Perhaps Crucius is a touch Harry Potter, but hopefully J.K. won't charge. Before others come to mock, the problem of finding cool-sounding Darth names is a serious one and is obviously something George Lucas himself has struggled with. Results have been mixed: Darth Tyrannus, anyone? Apparently there's a new character called 'Darth Caedus', which I hope is pronounced correctly as 'Kydus' because 'Darth Cedars' might make an evil tree surgeon but very little else.

It looks like you're trying to run the game on a laptop PC, which causes a lot of problems and I don't think is actually supported. You could try going to the Can I Run It? site and see what it says about your graphics card - it will compare it with official minimum requirements for the game - just choose Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II from the list. -

I agree. I read this thread just after finishing The Witcher, and I thought its take on the 'fantasy' setting was fresh and interesting. I think getting away from sword-coast DnD and Tolkien are no bad things - MotB was different enough to hold my interest, and I think there must be a lot of Faerun that we haven't seen yet that could prove fun, so even the DnD setting isn't dead. Fantasy also comes from our collective heritage of folk-tales and mythology, and those have already stood the test of time. -
Actually I chose Triss (as carer for Alvin, I assume you mean). Make a list if you wish.

If you guys want to eat what is essentially a small sack of partially-digested nuts and lard, then knock yourselves out.

This is huge, and very worrying for the next few days and weeks. Will her supporters interpret it as something President Musharraf ordered. pr at least that he should have prevented? They may well do so. I think she was a decent person, despite her record of corruption, and certainly a very brave one for returning to Pakistan when she did, and staying when she did. I don't think Pakistan can afford to lose brave leaders.

I just finished, and am happy. I don't think I could write a considered opinion of the game just yet, as it would likely be very gushy and incoherent, but this was the best surprise of the year. MotB was excellent, but not a surprise because we knew Obsidian had it in them, but The Witcher... :) So, I don't think it's signposted so clearly as to leave no room for doubt, and absolute certainty doesn't seem to have a place in Witcherland. It does seem likely, though. For Jacques' general appearance and clothing, I don't know - I'm about to start a new playthrough and will deliberately choose alternative answers to see if it makes a difference. If I play as a pro-human racist and teach Alvin that, and then find the big boss spouting the same opinions back at me in the final battle, then this game will be beyond awesome. Jacques' racism at least is very much based on competition from resources, and I always got the feeling that the racism was presented as habit, the continuation of long-standing grievances whose origin no-one can quite remember. That's an aspect of real-life racism/tribalism, though you're right that other factors play a part. Nevertheless, doesn't it goes deeper into the subject than most video games? Which other games have handled racism? Ultima VII springs to mind. What else?
