FO:NV: The Return of Gameplay Mechanics Discussion

I can understand the complaint about suppersupermutants, but geckos? The ****ing fauna?

They weren't interesting critters the first time around; unlikely they will be interesting the second.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

The way dialog options work in NV sounds like the way they worked in Fallout 2 (and others.) The only real differences are that skill checks are blatantly labeled and there's no minimum skill threshold that has to be met before the option appears, I think.

Replays with different character builds might not yield as many surprises, but it limits the chance of quests/etc. being buried in obscure dialog trees. For example, how many people went through Fallout 2 multiple times and never found the Vault City combat implants?

This talk of dialog options triggered by skills like stealth and explosives is hopefully a sign that this game is using a least a version of the Combat Boy/Stealth Boy/Speech Boy/Science Boy concept.

That's some brilliant details, they seem to have taken a really good approach to souping up original FO3 engine / mechanics in the limited time they have. Hardcore mode is a good idea and so are reputations.

I always wanted the newer Fallouts to be about rebuilding after the apocalypse, so mostly-intact-Vegas full of faction stuff is great. It looks like there's a lot of Van Buren inspired stuff like with the power plants, the laser, etc.

I don't mind the 'return of the supermutants' in this case - if we have a combination of the smart and the stupid and we can get to fight amongst each other that will be brilliant, and we'll get to learn what happened to them in the West (though lore-wise... well, I forget what the canon was on sterility). If the smart ones somehow survived and are actually an integral part of local politics and such, that's interesting enough to forgive 'lack of originality'.

Please, Obs, less super mutants. They get old very quickly and it's all we fought in FO3.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

As expected, FO:Vegas seems to be finally in right hands. As I read the article, I enjoyed it the brief play-through and feel the designers must be enjoying making the game.

With the reputation system and more skill-focused conversation system, it must be fun to play as a Charisma Boy/Gal.

The sense of humor is also good. Er...do male characters have one more weak point than their female counterparts...I mean, the body part where "Fore!" landed...

Not sure. At this point I am really trying to be pessimistic. The core game (Oblivion) had lots of potential but it needed a LOT of work to hammer into a decent gaiming experience. The only question I have is, is 18 months (give or thake) enough to take that toolbox and shape it into a good game, the whole edible story, decent gameplay, the (nobody knows where it really stems from) fun feeling. And will Beth let Obsidian do it?...

Dammit I don't need another ray of hope that might turn into a frog or worse again.....

Wasn't sure scans were ok. And yes... That one... Look I know this game is based on Gamebryo and there is only so much that can be done and lighting (ingame vs screenshot) might mess it up but... That thing is UGLY... and couldn't it have its own model at least? or something?

Oh, there are many more things we could talk about such as conflicting factions (Actually, Atreides was not bad at expecting these political conflicts, IMO and I'm rather glad about it). Weapon upgrades and possible Science Boy/Gal skills, which is most like to be proven useful in the latter adventure in Black Mountain...

The mutant and the Russian chick in AP both - either it's going to myssteriously work out in the actual game, or it'll be very stupid.
