Heijoushin Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) So now that we know the wizard subclasses, we also know the main schools of magic in Deadfire. Namely: Evocation, conjuration, enchantment, illusion and transmutation. To you think the existence of a conjurer subclass means that wizards will actually get some decent summons this time? I don't know about you guys, but I was a little disappointed in pillars that all the summons were moved to the Chanter and the wizards were just glass cannons. Also, no abjuration, divination or necromancy... do those schools not exist or do we simply not get subclasses for them? I suppose necromancy is the domain of animancers in pillars. JerekKruger Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 The Wizard's Essential and Substantial Phantoms were probably some of the best summons in the game. They might not have had as many summons as Chanters, but the made up for quantity with quality. 2
Boeroer Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Yes, wizards hat great summons (don't forget the tentacles that cause stuck on hit). If you're a blaster wizard you could enhance you performance even more with the summoning of yet another blaster wizard. Deadfire Community Patch: Nexus Mods
morhilane Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Druids had a few summons too. People always forget about the Druids. Going by how the Chanter has a summoning sub-class and how in the multiclass video the Druid spell list is basically its POE1 one (at least icon-wise), I don't think anything is changing here. The Wizard Conjurer will focus on the conjured weapons and things (duplicates, tentacles, minor blights) they had in POE1. I suspect abjuration and necromancy was rolled into other schools. The closest thing to necromantic spells in the Wizard's spell book in POE1 were the corrode and the fear/terror based spells. Corrode isn't any different from the other type of damage in the setting, so that's under evocation, while fear/terror are mind affecting spells so under enchanting. Azarhal, Chanter and Keeper of Truth of the Obsidian Order of Eternity.
Bill Gates' Son Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 The wizard (and druid) got a few high-level summons back in the PoE expansion, so I'm hoping they expand the list in the sequel. I'm also excited for the transmutation school of magic. I love spells like Polymorph Self and Shapechange back in BG2 and the NWN series, so perhaps we get spells like that in PoE2. Seems Transmuter get a spell just like Tensor's transformation.
Enoch Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) Low-level summons will probably remain the domain of the Chanter and Druid. The Conjuration spells at those levels will probably be inanimate stuff-- weapons, Slicken, Binding Web, etc. The "Phantom" spells might even be classified as Illusions. Guest 4ward Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 when we shapeshift we should be able to use staffs, no excuses Obsidian! https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ghgg_fukbvU?start=55&end=110 also, we should be able to shapeshift into a Japanese beetle with karate skill! https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ik--a99J86g?start=83&end=290
CottonWolf Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 The weird thing about conjurer specialists losing access to illusion is that, if they focus on summoned weapons, a lot of the spells that made melee wizards viable were spells like Mirrored Image and so on. A lot of it will depend on which spells fall into each school. That said, I agree that wizard summons are good. 2
Haran Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 More than I would like new spells, I would like *better spell descriptions* 3
MortyTheGobbo Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) I suspect the Conjuration school might be more about clouds, tentacles, grease and other "solid" objects the wizard can plop onto a battlefield. I also hope they don't get new summon spells. Summoning creatures is the chanters' gimmick, and druids' to a lesser degree. Wizards shouldn't get to do everything. injurai Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 More than I would like new spells, I would like *better spell descriptions* As much as I liked Pillars lore, world, and character writing. Their mechanical and meta writing was less than enough. So I'd agree to better descriptions. I think they've talked about improving these things in the past. It's also probably hard to do this writing early though while so much of the design is still changing. Hopefully they give themselves enough time to do a pass. The beta should help, because I'm sure they have so much implicitly in their head it's hard to know when and where they are introducing and conveying concepts.
Ancelor Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 All I care about is that self buffs are mostly included in one school (transmutation maybe?) so I can focus on that on my Arcane Knight J
Lephys Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 (edited) I don't see the need to restrict something as broad as summoning from all classes that would conceivably be able to do it. Why not let Wizards summon stuff in one distinctive way, and other classes summon things in other ways? Maybe Wizards only summon stationary things that do X Y or Z, and Chanters, for example, summon more mobile, miniony stuff, etc. To put it another way, I agree with MortyTheGobbo that "wizards shouldn't get to do everything," but they shouldn't NOT-get to do something that has plenty of room for distinction within a subset of it just because it's been arbitrarily decided that only some other class gets exclusive rights to this thing. It would be like saying "Only Paladins get protective/defensive abilities at all." There's plenty of room for distinctive defensive abilities between multiple classes. Edited September 29, 2017 by Lephys Should we not start with some Ipelagos, or at least some Greater Ipelagos, before tackling a named Arch Ipelago? 6_u
