Pertaining to ships and sailing, what do you, the player, hope to see in Deadfire?

Me, I'm really hoping to see full throttle Pirates Of The Caribbean scale ships. I'm hoping to see sea-creatures like Giant Crabs and Cthulhu-esque being.

I'm really hoping that we will see Megaladons and Mermaids. Mermaids that can be friendly or hostile. That would be great.

I want Obsidian to get jiggy with it and let loose the funk and be like "FUNK ALL Y'ALL!"

What do you hope to see and what do think will realistically be in there?

Just what do you think you're doing?! You dare to come between me and my prey? Is it a habit of yours to scurry about, getting in the way and causing bother?

What are you still bothering me for? I'm a Knight. I'm not interested in your childish games. I need my rest.

Begone! Lest I draw my nail...

I would like to see some decent ship battles, if that means versus pirates, navy, or a giant squid I am game regardless.  Maybe some light cargo management so you can use your ship as a freighter, and doing light trading stuff for fun and profit.  Ability to upgrade the ship, or get better ships, is a must.  Also having some customization of how the ship looks will also be critical.

Beyond that whatever floats Obsidian's boat.... c wut I did thar?

Definitely hoping for some epic battles as well! It would be pretty neat.

Cargo management would be interesting and cool, I had not thought of that.

Lol Icey icey :p

Man, I can't compete with your puns, my own are really shippy.

What I would like to see is a nightly Polpovir attack:

"One can imagine a sailor on the deck of his ship at night, looking out across the black water, blood freezing as countless lights appear beneath the surface, rising toward him as the Polpovir swarm upward." (Monsters of the Deadfire Archipelago)

I hope the game won't go overboard with pirates. It's not a pirate game, it's a fantasy game taking place in an archpelago were there are some pirates. There is one faction and I guess there will be minor other groups as standard enemies to beat. I don't want to play "Pillars of Eternity - Pirate Version".

Crew system to be good so we can scratch some management itch.

Crew system to be better so leaving "spare" companions on the ship shouldn't hurt as much i.e. they should be very useful in the crew.

Crew system to be awesome cos why not?

After some time into the game if we get recognition/respect, some quest giver NPCs should come to our ship rather than we go where they are to discover a quest, And we deal with them in our captain's cabin, behind the table, leaning back.

Secret meetings in the ocean with double crossings, ambushes etc.

Some legendary pirates/pirate ships & some mysterious ships & their crew /some of them derelict.

Some more stuff, more stuff is always good :p

And after that I'd like to see Obs' own space opera(or licensed The Expanse or Farscape rpgs) where they expand on the ship and related stuff :D

Since this would be similar to the audiences in Caed Nua (anyone else think sitting in the steward's lap was kinda weird?), I'd wager we have a good chance for this - could be really cool.

How about an "intercept a plague ship" mission? I know, I know, this plays on Space Hulk / Dracula / Armageddon tropes, but it could make for a nice horror themed story.

I'd like to see a bit of Kith vs. Nature conflict. Sea Monsters can definitely play into that, but it might be nice to have some scripted interactions where the player has to deal with rocks and waves and storms.

I'm not going to expect an island with a cyclops boss, but I wouldn't exactly complain if we got one.

One idea I have had for a pirate game for a long time (and which I think would actually fit in with PoE) is that party members act like the specialists you could pick up in Sid Meier's Pirates! game, with the bonuses they apply being dependant on their class and level.  So Rangers apply a navigation bonus as navigators for instance.  This would fit well with PoE, as it doesn't require the characters to spend points on being good at ship stuff at the potential cost of on-land combat ability (similar to how they make sure non-combat skills don't come at the cost of combat effectiveness by having them come from a separate pool, which I agree with).  Maybe the choosing of certain abilities would provide different bonuses maybe, but that would be in addition to what the abilities do and not at the cost of them.

Yep, I loved the added stuff to Caed Nua.

Plague ship could be a good way to enter the "big city" for the first time; having intercepted the ship and BURNED IT WITH FIRE, we could enter the city as a hero(with some enemies related to the burnt ship)...or quarter of the docks district dead cos of us not doing anything or being unsuccessful in out attempt :p

I like that...and maybe to make it complicated, if you do BURN IT WITH FIRE, you get to run into a couple people who would have loved to have one of the passengers stagger to shore, plague and all. Maybe the ship carried a spy bearing a secret? A father of a small child who doesn't understand? Just a bunch of peasants whose illness would have cleared out the slums a merchant wanted to buy cheaply?

There was something like this in Outlander, burning the already docked ship and its cargo IIRC, which creates a nemesis in France who owned the ship & the business. Yeah something like this could have various repercussions.

As much as I'd like to have ships of the line with blazing cannons and windjammers racing the blue seas, I think having actual naval combat like that is a bit much for PoE2. It is, after all, a roleplaying game, not Josh Sawyer's Pirates!. ;) If they can pull off some sort of gameplay at sea that reinforces the roleplaying aspect, that would be better.

Yes, I'm boring. Sea monster are cool, though. ;D

You're not boring, you are right. This is an RPG after all, we don't need no stinkin' action minigames. So please no Monkey Island style ship dogfights.

The obvious (and IMO solid and sufficiently RPGy) way would be to do ship vs. ship combat as scripted interactions, blazing cannons included. Boarding could work as standard combat on the ships' decks.

Well, another good news: What they showed in the video is exactly that :)

Ach, dammit. I remembered the boarding combat, but had forgotten about the scripted interaction in the video. Yeah, just like that is perfect in my opinion. Cheers for reminding me, Quillon!

I'd like to see the ship be the players stronghold.

In that case, good news everyone! :)

That's how they're approaching the encounters, according to the Sawyer/Null Q&A.
