Hong Su-jong had three different birth dates listed for her (1985, 1986, or 1989) at various competitions. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, she competed under the 1985 birth date, but the 1989 birth date would have meant that she was too young to compete. In November 2010 Hong Su-jong was banned from all competition out of North Korea for inconsistent age information for two years. North Korea was also banned from all international competition until October 2012 due to this incident, and North Korea could not send any gymnasts to the 2012 Summer Olympics. The Ethiopians and Kenyans essentially went balls out right from the gun --completely running roughshod over all sensibilities of tactics and energy conservation...and weeding out those not strong enough to keep pace. Gutsy -high risk/high reward strategy. US motto should be: tinstaafl. US ain't a socialist nation that grooms and supports its athletes. families and communities is responsible for recognizing and supporting our athletes. local church bake sales has done more to send American athletes to the Olympics than has our government. weep for those poor nigerians and ethiopians if you wish, but the typical american olympian won't be able to squeeze out many tears. Yes that one and as I said Yug would have probably lost, but still had a chance at winning. I think that they would have held the score under 10 point difference. It would have come down to strength vs skill, first half of the game we could have even taken the lead but after that the US would have probably had browned it out. In either case, it would have been a final to remember, instead of it just being the period in time when the best NBA player played together and steamrolled everyone. It does give a small monetary reward for winning golds at $15k, I think it was, but it's a relative pittance, particularly compared to some other countries that give upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars (and smaller reward for winning silvers and bronzes). The U.S. Olympians certainly have other advantages that some poorer countries don't have...but they could easily obtain those same advantages simply by sending their athletes to the U.S. or other Western countries to train (...and some of them do do this). So I would image that helps more then any funding or reward.
