Socialism isn't ownership, its right below a timeshare in terms of how close it gets to actual ownership.

It's collective control over production and distribution. You can argue what ownership is till your face turns blue, but if you think "anything the state does" is socialism you're illiterate.

I don't think he thinks socialism is "anything the state does".

His definition is probably "anything the state does that I don't like".

You two do realize that i'm from a Socialist country, right?

Socialism is the state owning the means of production; what this entail can be anything in the private sector from agriculture to recreation. It is state owned and the state reaps the benefits. If you actually believe that in Socialism the state is a collective of the people or that they have the best interests of the people in mind you're sorely mistaken.

No don't tell them. I've been getting a real laugh watching them explain how socialism really works to YOU!

Cuba or America? You seem to think both are socialist and my Obsidianstalking.txt isn't very big.

M8 I'm an anarchist, I don't trust the state to work in anyone's interests except those of the ruling hierarchy. But a collective ain't necessarily a state.

It is, indeed, quite funny how somebody who supposedly grew up in a socialist country apparently needs an explanation why the USA isn't socialist.

I didn't say the the USA is Socialist, but just like China isn't entirely Communism the US has streaks of socialism dying its society. What do you think that the New Deal, Welfare and other social welfare programs are.

This all refers to a post where Kaine mentioned how Bernie (Government owned higher education institution) could have prevented his student debt. My point was that he would still pay the same or more via taxes that he would have to give throughout the rest of his life. Meanwhile if your student debt is federal, the government already has debt forgiveness programs where they can erase most if not all of your debt. Consolidate your debt and get you lower monthly payments up until a term after which your debt would be erased irregardless of the total payed. Which even though I haven't crunched the numbers but just in terms of time seems a lot less than paying more taxes for the rest of your life.

I don't know why the **** they're trying to argue about Socialism when he should be asking me about those programs and how to lower his stupid student debt. I guess winning the argument is more important than crippling debt.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I don't have student debt, I pay out of pocket with no loans or financial aid at all. Under the current system, I'm already having to pay taxes throughout the rest of my life and seeing nothing of value for it. Under Bernie's proposed system I wouldn't have to shell out about 2 months worth of pay(after taxes) from my ****ty job just to get what is essentially High School Diploma 2.0 so I can compete with 50 similarly educated people for a slightly less ****ty job. Do I have to explain the concept of self-interest to you or are you able to figure out why I would prefer the latter without any help?

You do know that Bernie's plan would drastically increase government spending without anything to back it. He will not seize the means of production, merely try to squeeze more taxes out of everyone.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Yes I know a social democrat isn't going to usher in a revolution and at best he'd slap a band aid on a cancer patient, but at this point a band-aid would be better than nothing. If you've got a solution for my situation that isn't "blame the joos" or "try entrepreneurship dude weed lmao" I'd be interested in hearing it.

Since you're paying out of your pocket then Loan Forgiveness is not your thing.  Other than getting in touch with a financial specialist to see way to pay your loans or at least regain your capital, I got nothing.

Also, lucky you actually being able to pay out of pocket.

4000 for a semester? Not too bad. I think we are above 10k for engineering these days.

It's liberated whiskey.

4000 for a semester?

It could be pricer, but it's still a lot when you make 2.4k before taxes a month.

I don't want to brag KP but I got a BSEE from Florida Atlantic University with NO student debt. I took my first two years in a Community College and I worked full time for the entirety of my education.  Of course that meant it took 10 years but I walked out owning nothing to anyone.

I'm doing the same thing actually. The issue is that it's costing me about 4 months worth of work per year before you factor in books and all that stuff. It could be worse and blah blah blah but it's pretty god damn awful as it is and it feels like my life is a Springsteen song.

I borrowed about $15k to get through graduate school, and I don't regret it.  It is my lowest interest rate debt, I deferred it once when I was just starting out in teaching, and it is a simple $120 payment every month.  I could pay it off faster, but my cars have higher interest rates and get my extra monies instead.  Pretty manageable with a job.

I'm enjoying the new GI bill but the way it's set up makes it tough to use since you get the most out of it for taking as many classes as can at a time since you only have 36 months of benefits. Would be great if I didn't already have a full time job. It's still good but I'm so drained all time and have almost no time for anything else

Might also be better if I actually enjoyed school even the tiniest bit but I don't

KP, the best solution and the obvious one is for you to join the military for a few years. It would be the best thing for you but I understand this is not feasible as you have commitments to your mom?

Yeah I should point out the GI Bill paid for all of my classes at Broward Community College.

I don't think KP is the type to take that option. But since he is already pretty far along if he were I'd say look into ROTC.

Flew to Jamaica and drunk posted a lot of nonsense

At dinner they had live music and one of the performers was rocking the jazz flute which led to me trying to describe the movie Anchorman to my wife and a few other people but that didn't go so well

Heretic. Money is never wasted on Beer. As an old university student, I know how important it is for your cognitive abilities!

At this point in the process at the moment where a prospective employer is interested in my skills and I'm interested in working for them. Down to the nitty-gritty stuff now and see if we can agree on the practical details. Crossing fingers and hoping for the best.
