Trying to cure sick people by sucking all their blood out. Yes. The point of austerity is to limit growth in order to have a surplus. Which is one thing to do with an economy that is functioning well and another when it is doing very poorly. Trying to cure sick people by sucking all their blood out. No austerity can be and is effective Its also about countries making structural reforms like reducing government debt, selling assets and reducing bloated staff counts from departments. So by making some difficult but not egregious reforms a country can gets its economy working again. Ireland and Spain are successfully doing it "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. BruceVC Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 No austerity can be and is effective Paul Krugman thinks you are full of it. Yes and I can also name equally credible economists who will agree that austerity can and does work Plus I saw an interview with Krugman on CNN where he discusses this point and his view on Greece's economic future and the impact of austerity is much more complex than just " austerity cannot work for Greece " "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. But I also think it's worth pointing out you've happily revealed your considerable family wealth on this forum: you are, to be frank, loaded. So it's worth considering your robust defence of the status quo in that context. Bartimaeus Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 (edited) Ellen Pao Says the Trolls Are Winning. 40%? That seems...low. I would expect it to be closer to...I don't know...say, 100%? Hasn't everyone experienced some sort of online bullying of some sort at some point? I don't know how you'd avoid it, whether it's on forum boards, reddit, youtube comments, in multiplayer games, or anywhere else...probably even on sites like Facebook, too. If that means "they're winning", I really think we should correct that to, "they've already long won". But I don't personally think that's a useful criteria for determining whether "trolls" have won. I find this post disingenuous and unhelpful for a number of reasons So my family have been " successful " by understanding financial markets. Do we now attack investment bankers and traders because they do well? Lets not drag this discussion down to the lowest common denominator Monte where we only consider the opinions of people relevant who are impoverished or actually don't understand how financial markets work. It reminds me of the OWS (Occupy Wall Street ) movement..." down with the banks and the bankers ". Yet they can offer no viable, realistic or sustainable alternative to the banking system that most countries use and are a critical part of the economy of countries "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. Bu huu As long as those 'harassers' don't make threats and do anything IRL, aren't they virually indistinguishable from people you happen to disagree with on the internet. Are you really qualified to call them 'harassers' and are you being fair every time you decide to hand out that label. I have my doubts. Because their problem no matter what they say isn't the tiny percentage of people who can be legally persecuted if they are found. Their problem is the mass of people who just don't like them and are vocal about it. Which is not yet illegal. Edited July 19, 2015 by Fighter
Hurlshort Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I find it interesting how quickly the conservative base has switched from wanting to censor and condemn, to crying about being censored and condemned. It's been such a quick transition. I mean, McCarthy was a conservative Christian Republican who went after people for being communists and gays. Now every conservative Christian is claiming to be persecuted by socialists and gays. Crazy how the pendulum swings. The wonderful thing is all we need is basic capitalism to fix this mess. Reddit can make all the autocratic changes it wants, but if people stop using it, they will sink back into oblivion. 3

I am pretty sure fundamentalist conservative Christians still want to try to censor and condemn...they just want to do it how they like to do it, just as those on the other side of the political spectrum like to do. No seriously, what are the practical measures of combating harassment? For me the statement " Internet Trolls are Winning " is spurious because it needs context The more accurate statement is " Internet Trolls are winning on unmoderated Forums " Because there are many forums, like this one, where harassment is just not accepted...so I think we need to balance that statement against the forum or forums that people frequent "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. BruceVC Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 If you read her actual article she's talking about internet as a whole and how much harassment all online users receive. Yes which is why her view is wrong, she is generalizing. Its not that bad, her view is influenced by her troubling experience on reddit "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It's been such a quick transition. That quick transition from, er, the 1950s? Did you miss the 80's and 90's or something? To be fair, I don't recall your example conservative, Joe McCarthy calling out 2 Live Crew or NWA or similar in congress in the 1980s. And while Jack Thompson took on 2 Live Crew and NWA in the 1980s and 1990s, I don't recall him trying to force average citizens to name their communist pals in the 1950s. So I can understand the confusion. Joking aside, there's an adage that the a guy who complains he think his wife is cheating on him despite having no evidence is probably cheating on her because he's applying what he'd do to her is probably appropriate with respect to censorship. Someone who would definitely want certain products or line of thought censored will probably assume that the other side would also want certain products or line of thought censored and probably feel their line of thought is part of that when discussing binary situations (Repubs-Dems, for example) 2 I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Monte Carlo Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Unlike Hurlshot, and possibly because I'm not American, I don't view everything along such a totally partisan, binary axis. 'Conservative' means a lot of things. It's as least as broad a church, if not broader, than those of the Left.
Hurlshort Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 I can point to plenty of democrats like Joseph Leiberman and Hilary Clinton that have a terrible track record when it comes to censorship. I'd consider them just as conservative as a number of Republicans. Really I find that the concept of left and right in American politics is completely overstated. They are all pretty much different shades of the same color. You might find this hard to believe, but I'm not a liberal in any real sense. I am a hardcore moderate, and I think both conservatives and liberals are crazy.
