Finding hidden items explained please

Recommended Posts

So. what affects finding items that are hidden.

in order to find items i do know you need to be sneaking.

does perception the attribute help find items?

and what speeds up the time to discover a hidden item  more perception or?

does it matter how many chars have perception or just having one near maxing always sneaking the best way?

or does nothing actually matter and  you just need to be sneaking?

Wait.... let's be clear...

Mechanics helps you find traps AND non-trap hidden items?

It really makes no sense if non-trap hidden items are tied to mechanics.

realllly? No sense? So because of mechanics u can see invisible string of booby trap, but u cannot see grip of the sword behind a chest?

Meh.  Obsidian was just really bad at naming things.

If it makes you feel better you can make a mod that changes the names of attributes and skills.

Jogging, cowering, looking, eating and sherlocking.

Damage, Fattiness, Speed, Dodging, Controlling, Weaving.

Honestly though, it makes no sense to detect *anything* with Mechanics at all.

Detection should've been based on Stealth and affected to some degree by Perception.

True. But for now I'll settle for just knowing how it works.

Huh? Why would mechanics help you find things that have nothing to do with mechanics?

Although I admit that coming from DnD games, detecting with mechanics seems to make no sense, after thinking about it a bit, it makes sense to me.

I think that, to detect a hidden trap, or a hidden mechanism, you have to be familiar with hidden traps and mechanisms, with how they are constructed and installed; from that point of view, it makes sense that it is the mechanics skill that allows you to realize there's a trap in front of you, because if your mechanics skill is high enough, you know what to look for. It would not make sense if it was stealth, because the skill to hide yourself doesn't suddenly gives you trap engineering knowledge.

That said, I agree that conflating the "searching for traps" and "hide in shadows" stances in the scouting mode has made things confusing, one tend to intuitively assume your character is just trying to hide, not trying to detect anything, and then think "why do I have to hide to pay attention to traps?". But you're actually scouting, which for me could be translated to "just being careful and attentive, watching your steps in case there's danger".

EDIT: oh, the conversation was mostly about non-trap hidden items. Yeah, in that regard it doesn't make sense. My bad, I read too fast.

EDIT 2: although it depends of the way those non-traps are hidden. Like, something hidden just behind a curtain shouldn't need mechanics, but something like a hidden room behind a fake wall that doesn't make architectonical sense with the rest of the room could be something a mechanics (think engineering) knowledge would help finding.

It's a simplistic streamlined approach to skills. With only 6 of them, they are broad strokes that encompass various things. Just keep that in mind. There's only 6 skills in the game, so putting finding stuff in with Mechanics, which is used to disable the traps and pick the locks you find is just a synergy thing. It doesn't fit in with Lore, Athletics, Survival, etc. So it's bound to the thing that works best with it. First you find the thing, then you disable it, all with the same skill.

Does it even matter? You know mechanics is used for detecting hidden stuff. That's it. So just buff it.

The only skill that would made sense would have been "familiarity with hidden mechanisms" for secret mechanisms and "prodigy detective" for hidden rocks etc.

Like everything makes perfect sense in any rpg!

To resurrect an old thread, I've gotten Durance up to a decent Mechanics skill now but he has still yet to find ANY trap when a container/floor is trapped. Even sneaking. But sometimes when I'm not sneaking he'll get a surge of usefulness and see a hidden object somewhere.

Hello,

I don't know if It is intended but in Galvino laboratory, there is a lot of hidden traps we can't detect and not even avoid, even if in stealth mode, it is very frustrating ...

May be  it is special traps we can't detect or may be it is a glitch, but the only way to detect them is to use the interact button + arrow (on PS4 X+any arrow), I have 9 mechanic and 15 perception...

its also based on ur skill of mechanics to be able to find the hidden secrets as well as being able to disarm a trap.  just like u may need 5 points into mechanics to disarm a trap, u would need 5 points into mechanics to SEE the hidden objects as well.  if u had 4, u would not be able to disarm the trap and in hidden items, u would not be able to find the hidden item.

Usually I can detect traps in stealth mode, some I can disarm, and other I can't... I can always see them, but some of the traps (In Galvino laboratory, in the room with the haunted pistol - or in the Hall of remembrance in the Durgan's Battery) I can't even detect them, I see them only with the "scan function" Tab on PC.

is that a too low mechanic problem ? or are they special traps ? ...

I heard WM need 12/13 mechanic, and I can have 10 max for now ..
