Okay my thoughts are that the game is currently further away than I'd like from BG2 when it comes to interfaces, mechanics, etc...

My thoughts were that the game would be a copy/paste (figuratively speaking of course) of BG2 with shinier graphics, new story line, and in a new fantasy world. With some incremental changes in various levelling and gameplay mechanics.

Landscape Graphics - tick in the box, confident it'll be awesome when finished

Character/monster models - so/so, I'm sure it'll get more polish by release. All look too clunky for my liking, could be more lean and mean with better colouring.

Races/Backgrounds - so/so - think the godlike are too strange and stat bonuses, etc don't excite me personally, nothing is compelling me to play something other than a human, especially combined with the current downgrading of the relevance of attributes there doesn't appear to be any benefit to playing a specific preferred class with a race.

Story - pass.

Attributes, skills, levelling system, etc - Uncomfortable with this, was good in theory but in practice it isn't playing out as expected, currently feels alien and far too dissimilar to the IE games

UI - it'll get there I'm sure

Character creation - can I roll please, this old school pen and paper gamer can only hope. Would like more detailed and slimmer/ more attractive models with some more options. Portrait is so important to me and I'd rather have 2D model Like BG2 in the character/inventory with a lot more portrait variations.

These are the key things that come up initially

Why the hell would they just copy and paste an existing game? It should be somewhat different than BG2! And don't get me wrong, BG2 is one of my favorite games, but it has been like 14 years since it came out, it should be improved on where possible.

I like where they're going, they just need to work on balancing and tweaking, but the basic systems are fine as far as I'm concerned.

I can understand some of the complaints/confusion but this was never going to be a D&D licensed game, so saying "copy/paste" is kind of ridiculous.

The pitch was always: "Do you like isometric, party-based, RPGs with tactical, real-time combat and a deep engaging story?" The beta has some rough spots for sure, but underneath the issues, it sure seems like the game they pitched is underneath there somewhere.

Only thing i'm not liking so far is with the new resource required to rest, being a wizard sucks. You use your spells and find you need to rest to replenish them after a battle or two. Meaning you use the limited resources to rest or you walk all the way back to the inn to rest. Having to strategically save you higher level spells for bosses makes taking a wizard along kinda a waste of time in this case b/c if you don't have any camping resources your wizard is essentially a dead weight after one or two battles. Yes you can tailor your wizard to get into melee combat, but why be a wizard when you can't cast spells at will? At least fighters abilities replenish for each encounter same with the chanter (can chant forever). Haven't tried all the other classes yet, but camping resources make classes that require rest to use their abilities a chore and personally if this stays as is I would only take a party of fighters ;p

I like this guy. He's honest.

Deluded, but honest.

I'm British, we're born deluded. Lol... I'm figuratively speaking of course. What I'm saying is that they shouldn't stray too far from the BG2 formula. Yes, there is the same 2D landscape present, but there is a lot more that BG2 offered up in terms of a tried and tested gameplay mechanic, etc...

PS: I'm also really good at standing in a que.

Figuratively speaking, I should've probably specified that.

A lot of the changes are good. A lot of the changes are bad.

I agree with some of the comments, the dungeons and monsters have more a very IWD feel then BG, for example the spiders. I prefer the BG style more, so the lean / mean comments make sense to me.

Also noticed the blue circles under the characters can be changed to green which is awesome. I found the blue off putting.

Yes you may - get 3 six-sided dice, roll them on the desk (old school) and go with what they tell you for each attribute - if you get all 18's, I guess you have to reroll since you won't have enough points but it should work on average.  I may do this for a 3rd playthrough - a 'get what you're given' style.  Oooh, could also roll for race and class etc (I know there's only 11 classes - getting a '12' would be 're-roll') - that might actually be fun,

I certainly hope they stay as far away from Baldur's Gate as possible.

If they did that it wouldn't be much of a successor to the IE games considering all of them have a lot in common with BG.

"Good thing I don't heal my characters or they'd be really hurt." Is not something I should ever be thinking.

I use blue text when I'm being sarcastic.

The backer beta already has more choices than Baldur's Gate had.

First of all LOL

Secondly, I 100% agree with this man and his sentiments. I was a little surprised and horrified upon booting up the beta....this....is...not....what I expected. Perhaps I didn't really know what to expect....but certainly not this.

I certainly hope that they take far more inspiration from Planescape: Torment than they do from Baldur's Gate 2. I'll admit I enjoyed BG2 right up until you got Imoen back (at which point it took a dive), but Torment was something else altogether. Lots of fond memories there.

But then the complaints in the original post really have nothing to do with any particular game. I mean, you want a reason to play a race other than human? This isn't some war game where figuring out the optimal stats for your class is part of the fun. Why not ask for a mechanical inventive not to play a male, while you're at it? As for the attributes being dissimilar to the AD&D games, all I can say is thank goodness. You got your vancian magic, but don't go campaigning for them to take that horrible attribute system back too.

Ok, for the people who want a "copy" of Baldur's Gate 1 or 2, I have a suggestion: install and play BG 1 & 2.

PoE was meant from the beginning to be a 'spiritual successor' of the Infinity Engine games, which included BG 1 & 2, IWD 1 & 2, Planescape. If you prefer BG and think you're entitled to have a game more similar to BG than those other games, you are deluded and your point is too subjective and too narrow to be of any use to the discussion.

Problem is that the new game design changes are for worse. I haven't seen one thing in game design that has improved in PoE from IE games like BG2. However, things like graphics/engine (the backgrounds) has certainly improved.

Hello "Mr. Elitist". Everyone are entitled to their opinion. And of course an opinion is subjective... duh. If the developers think that the feedback is crap then they can say so. You are not in any position to judge if his/hers opinions are too narrow to be of any use.

I don't understand why you are trying to bash on other people?

I was hoping for something inbetween PST and BG2. In my opinion BG2 had better game design and GUI while PST was far more hm.. philosophically interesting and I also liked the even "harder" focus on dialogue.
