^ OTOH the Promancers have been contained in this thread, and some of the less crazy ones seem to have wandered off (now that it is clear that romances aren't pinging on the dev's design radar).

Except for the dude who quoted a mod where you could intervene in an existing NPC relationship, and said mod turned out to be virtual pr0n.

LOL.

Promancers: Promancers never change.

What are you talking about? Merin and the others weren't crazy?

As opposed to the wealth of open-mindedness we get from you guys...

There is open-mindedness and there is accepting anything they tell/sell you, without thinking about it first, even if it's crap.

Nobody wants, well... this happening to the Obsidian forums.

It goes all the way to page one-thousand, two hundred and sixteen.

It's insane.

When in doubt, blame the elves.

I have always hated the word "censorship", I prefer seeing it as just removing content that isn't suitable or is considered offensive

That pales in comparison to the old Talimancer threads, which went on for thousands upon thousands of pages. Ugh.

Anti-romancers are a very constructive and polite bunch. Model citizens, really. But it's not hard to be a model citizen when you're comparing them to a promancer.

You know, that should be a class in a videogame. "My Lord, I bring news of a grave threat! A ~Promancer~ has taken up residence in the abandoned fan-fiction quarter and is amassing an army of badly written fan-fiction and poorly drawn pornography!"

I wonder if there will be some kind of mentor-ship relationship in the game, perhaps Forton would be a good candidate for it? I think that Obsidian has shown they can do them very well(see Kreia) and it would be an obvious role for an old monk.

Indeed.

I'd also like to see some sort of mentorship relationship where the player is the mentor. That can be interesting too.

I'm also wondering if it would be possible to implement some sort of friendly rivalry between the PC and a companion, something that could feel natural for the player. How about class-related competition? Like, if the PC and the companion have the same combat class, comparisons could be made. If the PC is of higher level than the companion and you use an ability they haven't unlocked yet, they could be like "Hey, that was a cool trick you used in the last battle, but don't get too confident because I'll catch up to you". Or on the contrary, if the NPC is the one of higher level, or has unique abilities, maybe they could throw some friendly taunts in your direction. It's hard to balance, something that feels competitive yet friendly, without coming across as condescending or hostile.

...****, it sounds so corny now that I wrote it. But I don't know, maybe it could work. Class comparisons, race rivalries, there are some possibilities there. From so many gameplay ways to customize your character, it seems like some of the most superficial ones could be used in the NPC interactions too.

That seems like a slightly more developed version of the common"friendship" path, where the person wants your opinion and takes all your advice.

Romance as it was done in Baldur's Gate 2 and, to a degree, Neverwinter Nights 2 is all that I really need, or want, from a video game 'romance'. I strongly dislike the course Bioware took with Mass Effect and Dragon Age..

Forton = Mr Miyagi

I hope teaches the PC the crane kick

You are correct, it does sound pretty damn corny, almost like something that would be in an anime. I would prefer an intense rivalry that can end up somewhat like the rivalry in The Prestige. I would like to see the more negative relationships get a bit more depth than "I don't like you".

If they do make Forton the mentor, I hope he's more Iggy Pop than Mr. Miyagi. Looks the part too.

Will he teach the PC how to search and destroy, or to be your dog?

Mhy.... relations in rpg games are a sticky topic (pun intended) coz its actually hard to merge relationships with Saving the world theme. And unless you wanna go the Japanese dating sim route you wont make it extra deep :p

Still people fighting togeather and risking lives tend to kinda bond me thinks, friendships and whatnot. Also its a fact that women like strong hero types that, or dudes kinda fall for Strong Hero Women or Cute Hero Women coz they are like that, they are close and well... violence and fear of death always works like afrodisiac :p Besides go back to the schooldays- how many guys girls felt their knees buckle when they saw Her/Him walking down the hall smiling and whatnot. Just make it... well interesting, talking. Asking for opinion, a lot of talk is always good. I will propably get crucified for that but i will name a Imoen romance mod- it had some really cool lines in it. For example- Imoen asking the PC how does he feel and wouldnt he liked some help, coz everyone else says - Do that for me, Youre the hero, Save village, Kill Dragons... now take cash and get lost. And great hero turns suddenly to an gloryfied errant boy that has to stay in corner and awat further instructions.

Heh... it seems its impossible to implement anything besides- gief rep then sex, then nothing. Or noone seems to care :p

ONCE AGAIN.

http://www.something...cial-forums.php

Rejecting bad ideas is not the same thing as being closed-minded. All ideas are not good ideas.

Implying that all pro-romancers are like that or that all romance in games lead to things like that is foolish. It makes about as much sense as point out the Sandy Hook shooter played mass effect so clearly playing ME (or maybe the romance in ME?!) makes you want to shoot children.

K is for Kid, a guy or gal just like you. Don't be in such a hurry to grow up, since there's nothin' a kid can't do.

Lol denial. You were supporting bioware romances(and their crappy writing in general) like crazy a few threads back. You were acting as much as a fangirl as any of the people ridiculed in the link. The problem you don't understand is that romance on its own isn't the problem(aside from a writers ability to write this kind of relationship well), turning it into a choose your own sex fantasy adventure minigame(which is what you people want) is.

which is what you people want

Self-confidently deciding by yourself what other people want is a bad thing. Even worse thing - theorizing some groups from your head, and insisting that all who you wish to put in that group are completely same.

Seriously? This is your argument again? Yes, there are bad ideas(whether people like them or not doesn't make them better), I don't have to support them.

And yes, that is what pro-romancers want. Just because you don't see it yet, doesn't mean it's better. Go read the previous pages and threads, I'm not going to repeat the same arguments again. As said by others before, don't come here asking for "non-bioware style" romances, when bioware is the only company creating games that include romances consistently.

I have no problem with many of the bioware romances I'll gladly admit to that. Only a handful really stand out in my mind as awful and the majority of them are in DA2 which was low quality through and through. However my liking of some of those romances that I believe are done well doesn't mean I've ever gone to any forum clamoring for fan-fiction or any thing else. I've said in previous threads that things like sex scenes are tacky and shouldn't be included along with the fact that I was fine with the more subtlety implied romances seen in PS: T. So to assume I (and all other pro-romancers since you're lumping all of us together) want a "choose your own sex fantasy adventure" is just an assumption on your part and is quite simply wrong.

You can paint us with a broad brush if you like, that's your choice, just understand that you'll always come off as ignorant as anybody who claims something along the lines of, "all people who play rpgs are virgins with no lives that live in their parents basements."

But they are, that's why I only play Gears of Honor: Modern Battlefield.

Anyway, trying to write a good relationship has just as much chance of success as of failure, and usually there will be both people who like 'em and who hate 'em. Not wanting them to be included is only a justifiable reaction if you don't want them included out of fear that there won't be good non-romance interaction with romance-able NPC's (or fear it'll cause the game to blow it's budget).

If that isn't your reason for wanting them excluded, then you're just being petty.

There were no "romances" in PS:T. It's like people talking about F2 like it has romance because of the wedding in Modoc and the Bishop girls. And whether there is an uncanny sex scene or not doesn't make it any less a fulfilment of fantasy minigame. You ask for choose your own adventure romances. Aside from the whole Avellone sucking at writing them and not really liking them, they are sappy and no one managing to get these things right arguments.... The fact that they are just options to choose from, diminishes their importance as relationships. So yes, they do turn into a "choose your own sexual(romantic if you will) fantasy" minigames.

You can paint us with a broad brush if you like, that's your choice, just understand that you'll always come off as ignorant as anybody who claims something along the lines of, "all people who play rpgs are virgins with no lives that live in their parents basements."

Funny how I wasn't the one that brought that up(neither did I call you ignorant), kind of like with other pro-romance posters way back. Guess some things(that people say on the ****ing internet) really hit the nerve huh?
