Bland_Boy Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Wondering if people are as interested/excited as I am about the possibility of a physical almanac. If it can't be included at higher tiers like 500 for free, then I am surely willing to pay a little extra in order to secure one. Up to $50 I'm willing to part with for a Physical Almanac. Interested in perspectives of all, but especially higher tiers of 500 and above and their willingness or non willingness to part with a little more cash for a Physical Almanac. 2
Raedwulf Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) I would like to ask for a hard cover almanac, too. But it shouldn't be included in any tier, as this would take the money for printing from PE, but offered as a physical addon. Edited October 14, 2012 by Raedwulf
Hormalakh Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Definitely would be interested. I really think a printed world almanac at a higher tier will really sell and will get PE a higher backer count. You know that's a whole game in and of itself. It's basically what you'd need to run your own PnP game. 1 My blog is where I'm keeping a record of all of my suggestions and bug mentions. http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/ UPDATED 9/26/2014 My DXdiag: http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/2014/08/beta-begins-v257.html

The last thing I think anyone would want is to take money away from PE, but you'd have the same problem with physical addons taking away from digital addons ($15) My blog is where I'm keeping a record of all of my suggestions and bug mentions. http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/ UPDATED 9/26/2014 My DXdiag: http://hormalakh.blogspot.com/2014/08/beta-begins-v257.html
Bland_Boy Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 How would a physical add on take away from a digital add on of the almanac?
walkir Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Interested in perspectives of all, but especially higher tiers of 500 and above and their willingness or non willingness to part with a little more cash for a Physical Almanac. I'd take it as part of the $500 tier, but wouldn't shell out money for it if it was an add on. Not if we're talking $20+, which would probably be necessary. Making it part of the $500+ tiers means Obsidian already knows they need 436(+equivalent Paypal tiers) copies, which means they'd be in a better position to talk with their printer company and get a good add on price. And they're thinking of making this a full blown PnP RPG if economically feasible, so this might be a good first step in that direction.
Hormalakh Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 How would a physical add on take away from a digital add on of the almanac? Well instead of paying the $15 for the digital add on for the almanac I'd be paying $30 (as an example). That's only $15 more, and they've just lost a digital add-on. I'm thinking that its gradual increases instead of new sales. Raedwulf Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Well, after spending some time to think about the idea of an physical addon, I want to refrain from it. The printing costs are mainly setup costs. So it doesn't matter if you're printing 2 or 100 almanacs, the costs remain, roughly, the same. If you include it in the tiers above 500, you get an incentive for about 600+ backers. On the other hand, with a hard cover almanac as a physical addon you risk not getting the money to fund the printing costs. Well, on the other --my third-- hand, Feargus stated they're thinking about offering a PE Pen and Paper RPG. If so, a hard cover almanac would be handy anyway. Looks like it boils down into a business decision... Anyway... So I should change my mind and ask, as sitting on a $500 + tier at the moment, shamelessly for a hard cover alamanc to be included in the $ 500+ tiers.
Theobeau Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 A physical version could be quite popular and even if you have it as an extra for the $500 pledges, you'd expect that if priced at priced at a $20-30 range it would generate quite a addition sales in itself. If you consider that printing costs and retail price would be reduced with a soft cover version (though the book's aesthetic appeal would be sacrificed somewhat) it is probably do-able. As someone pledging below the $500 range, I'd certainly consider chosing it as an add-on. Here's hoping! - Project Eternity, Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera; quality cRPGs are back !
Hormalakh Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Yeah... the costs of printing and shipping and the man-hours for individually mailing them are too prohibitive it seems unless its tiered. To print or not to print, that is the question: How many backers do you, ie. Obsidian, expects to book this addon? By the way, the Dungeons and Dragons 3E / 4E source books are in the range of $ 30 to $40 for hard cover books, so a price of $ 30 should be cost-effective.
Raedwulf Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Yeah... the costs of printing and shipping and the man-hours for individually mailing them are too prohibitive it seems unless its tiered. If the printed almanac is, like the other physical items, for physical tiers only, you must not include shipping costs here.
diablo169 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 No more Physical rewards, its going to eat up the games budget before its even been made,
Hormalakh Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) But if a physical item bumps enough people from one tier to the next, then it could actually give OE a bigger budget, costs included and all. That's what we're discussing here Diablo169. If you know that 50 people are willing to go from one tier ($165) to a higher tier ($200 for example) and be able to cover the costs of giving all the $200 tier physical books, would you do it? It's not a very simple calculation to figure out exactly how many people you'd need to shift to the next tier to make it cost-effective and I'm too lazy to really figure it out right now. Krios Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Yes I welcome a physical copy of the almanac. It should be possible to include it in the $500 and above tiers where all the shipping costs are already included. It will likely be a small booklet. The pages can be in black and white, with only the covers in color. To help reduce costs, and it is another incentive for people who like physical items like myself to up their pledge.
Wirdjos Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I am in favor of all the hardback books this project can produce. Novella, nudge nudge. This late in the game, it definitely makes sense to add it to the Obsidian store they are cooking up after the kickstarter is done though. Just keep the whole thing out of the game funding and start collecting actual revenue for the franchise.
KingofKnights Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Even if there is no physical release, you can just print out the pdf files which shouldn't be too bad.
Bland_Boy Posted October 15, 2012 Author Posted October 15, 2012 Cost a lot of money in quality inks and stuff
diablo169 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Doublefine have spent over half a million dollars just making the junk for rewards, just so you can make a fair comparison. Hence my comment. I dont want the games budget vanishing on making more stuff to reward people with. One of the reasons I picked the $165 reward tier.
santanzchild Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Release the hard cover almanac in the store in conjunction with the pnp rule set it will be bought
