Some observations from my point of view:

Romney

- A realist mascerading as an idealistic republican

- Business friendly, somewhat corporate

- Not hating the poor, but indifferent to them

- Doesn't like people in general. Not for being shy, but because he's an introvert

Santorum

- A religious populist

- Extrovert, likes to hang around people

- Pro-business, but not like Romney. More like they are a magic being that somehow brings welfare to all

- Probably a bisexual

Gingrish

- Pompous, arrogant. Shows serious signs of sociopathic tendencies

- Understands the ideals behind the core republicans, but only quote them when it benefits him

- Hates the poor

- Doesn't really care about business

- He gives me "The dead zone"-vibes

Paul

- Idealist to the core, but with great integrity

- Honest and likes to debate on an intellectual level. Get's stumped when dealing with "dumb" people

- Truly belives that the poor are just millionares in a slump

- Indifferent to business as long as they don't conflict with personal liberties

That's pretty much it. Paul is the only one who could win over Obama in a debate. The rest would either be internally conflicted by their own personality and ethics, or shot down by pointing out their religious or political hypocrisy.

I'd really like Ron Paul to win but he simply doesn't stand a chance. If the party threw its weight behind him (which another thing that's not going to happen) I guestimate that he'd beat Obama easy.

I don't consider Romney a lunatic, I will consider voting for him depending on his choice of running mate.

I would never vote for Santorum, and that is something the republican party should be looking at. I am a complete moderate, a voting base that is really up for grabs and will probably decide the election.

Paul could probably grab a lot of moderate voters like me, but he doesn't have a real shot at the nomination.

Haven't had interest in US politics for a lot of time and just recently saw some highlights from Republican debates. And I really don't know what Ron Paul is doing competing for president while endorsing viewpoints that are strongly in contrast to some of the biggest industries and powerhouses in the western world. No wonder the 'mainstream' media (such an oxymoron) pushes him put of the spotlight as much as it can. But it was funny to watch him nail down some of the co-speakers, especially that moderator who said that he was least Republican of the candidates.

On the other hand, Romney is most eligible candidate for those that actually pick the president so he's the obvious winner for the Republican nominee.

My problem with this statement is that it's a meme that the media have promoted since before he even entered the race :shrugz:

But it's true, his party support is minimal. He also hasn't ever really threatened to gather much in the way of delegates. He's done surprisingly well given his politics. I've said before, it is great to have him out there, because he keeps a fresh take on the issues, but he's a lot like the Ralph Nader of the Republican party.

Guard Dog, you'd really vote for Santorum over Obama? Obama has shown himself to be little more than what, 50 years ago, would have been centrist republican. Santorum has all but called for open theocracy and is, essentially, bigotry incarnate.

I have trouble accepting how big an importance people place on simple labels, especially in a two-party system. Just like I have trouble accepting how Americans don't seem to understand the role of the congress at all.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Santorum is that nutter presidential candidate from Stephen King's "The Dead Zone".

No, that would be Gingrich. Santorum is too religious and lacks the necessary narcissism required. Gingrich on the other hand...

Nep makes a good point, congress would probably do a fair job stopping Beelzebub Santorum from lynching all the gays, unfortunately they'd also put up a hell of a fight if St Paul tried to dismantle the war machinery, either way a president isn't supposed to be a dictator and regardless of whether you think Obama had good intentions or not they can't just do what they want, no matter what they promise on the campaign.

They can stop the prez from doing bad things, and they can stop him from doing necessary things, if they feel it improves their own candidates election, gaming the lack of knowledge I referred to above.

Is Obama really so bad that you would seriously consider one of these lunatics for running the country. Be careful you don't end up protest voting yourself into a worse situation.

Yes, yes and yes again. I'd trade Obama for either Romney or Santorum right now hands down. I would not call either of them lunatics. Romney in particular is a very smart guy. I don't completely agree with either of them on much but either would be an upgrade.

That Santorum bit of this post? Disgusting.

Yeah it really pisses you off that somewhere in the wide world out there someone might have a different politcal viewpint than yours dosen't it. But then again you posted you don't really consider them people so...

For what it's worth it pleases me to no end you find my opinion disgusting. I must be doing something right then.

Santorum doesn't just have differerent political views, he's running a campaign that openly looks to oppress women and gay people. For me that is just vile.

I am much more comfortable to know Romney will just avoid the issues. Not happy, but at least I know civil rights won't be forced to step backwards.

I just want to juxtapose these two posts because one of them makes logical sense, and the other is kind of terrifying.

I don't see how it's possible to not consider Santorum a complete loon.

WTF is wrong with the Republican party? Is it really so hard to find a normal person with so many US citizens to choose from?

I was going to say that with the people currently poised to run America, I'm glad I don't live there.

Then I remembered my country has in a short span gone from a frontrunner in human rights to a frontrunner in racism and discrimination, so I really have no right to speak.

What the **** is up with the world?

I think the problem is that we've become a bit confused about the purpose of democracy. We keep insisting on voting for radicals with 'big' solutions to our problems, when - and I speak from experience - our national problems are far too complex to be dealt with by huge sweeping changes.

Unless that's the only way they can be dealt with.

Damnit. Now I'm confused.

Don't get into a big twist about Santorum, he's not going to get nominated. This little bit of political theatre will be done and over by the time we get to the election. He'll make some noise and probably end up with a cabinet job and you can forget all about him then.

Oh, of course. I just don't get how you'd think anyone would be worse than Santorum as president.

Bah, most of the stuff they say is just to define a position different from other candidates, to hook a certain type of voter in. The actual likelihood of most of that stuff getting implemented is almost non existent.
