Yes, these too. The only ones I have left untouched are [Lie], [bluff] etc. because I find them to be important information for the player (without these, you don't know if your character is lying or not and you might see two very similar dialogue options every once in a while: The lie-line and the truth-line).

So long ago when I purchased Honest Hearts, in order to activate it/play it I had to check the .esm. I've now patched and have OWB/LR, and I see their .esm's in the file list....but now, even when they are NOT checked, as soon as I start the game w/a new chr. I get the quest messages to go to their start spots etc. (with HH I only got that message popup when it was checked)

It could be a mod conflict but I thought I'd ask if that was supposed to happen or not, first.

On balance I like the GRA. The challenges are certainly cool.

the above statement is chock full o' gamer's pith.

*groan*

the challenges is cool? any schnook on this board coulda' posted a list o' "challenges" that would be no less challenging and no less deserving o' a price tag. sure, you get no silly achievement tag if you complete a vol challenge or a goth challenge, but by the same token you would not be asked to pay for a goth challenge. the challenges wal identifies is representing the current high water mark o' gamer absurdity. maybe next obsidian will release a dlc that is nothing more than additional challenges... 'cause they is cool.

Well, some people really like challenges, as a motivator to keep playing.

But for me personally, I'd agree....while it is sorta fun to see "ding, you made an achievement" I don't typically play to get them and don't find challenges/achievements to be motivating - could care less if they existed. They do seem a pretty weak thing to advertise a DLC's merit with. >_<

Shoot a molerat - "Fallout lvl 1" = rubbish achievement

Trap Elijah in the vault with at least one holotape and 3 robot components - "Sciency Mystery Theatre" = cool

The point is there are dumb challenges and good challenges. Plus there are bragging rights to tough ones. What's so hard to understand?

the sad thing 'bout this is that we is certain that you is serious and genuine.

try this little experiment:

go to a local skate park, rugby pitch or school playground. find a group o' kids engaged in some activity and offer them kewl challenges. even better, ask the kids to Pay for your challenges. just try it. ask a bunch o' skater punks to buy your carefully crafted list o' challenges. let us know what kind feedback you get.

the notion o' selling achievements and challenges is a kinda special idiocy limited to the game industry. any other group o' enthusiasts is gonna wanna generate their own challenges, and they surely ain't gonna thinks that a product with such challenges is a selling point worth noting. achievement/challenge mentality o' gamers is freaking nuts.

ask the kids to Pay for your challenges.
Now let's try exchanging the word challenge for trophy, medal, ring, ribbon, or belt. Not only will people pay to try for those things, other people will pay to watch them try.

am not certain that this an accurate parallel, is it? use skate park analogy again. try to sell completion medals to kids at the local skate park. you is not giving out medals or trophies for competition, but for completion o' arbitrary tricks. if you pay a fee, you gets a little medal for each verified trick completed. am s'posing this might sell... for 'bout ten seconds. medals and trophies don't mean a heck o' a lot to anybody 'less they is won and exclusive. if everybody gets, then where is the thrill? am s'posing it takes a gamer to see the thrill in wal examples.

we beat Joliet Catholic for the sectional championship is a bit different than a digital token for completing an arbitrary game challenge... a challenge created by some developer schnook.

Where's the satisfaction in competition at all? Let alone exclusive rewards from competition. It's not rational to begin with. It's a basic trait that easily fooled and substituted.

eh? what planet are you from? rewards for competition is very real... is why children is taught to seek the Win at early ages. is a primitive and real drive to compete for food, sex, shelter, etc. winner lives. more "advanced" cultures has not genuine changed. the guy with the best test scores and grades gets to go to the best schools. there can be very real and tangible rewards for excelling at sports, and winning in competition is a mark o' excellence. we still compete and gets rewarded daily. maybe is not tooth and nail competition for base survival, but we still compete for sex and money... even in those backwards socialist countries.

is just plain sad if completionist trophies is the gamer's substitute for the rational and real rewards o' competition.

HA! Good Fun!

ps keep in mind that Gromnir is not advocating some kinda ulta-competitive mentality. is extreme unhealthy when everything in a person's life is competition. nevertheless, we thinks it would be a bit myopic to suggest that rewards for competition is irrational.

clarification:

keep in mind that wal and tale is coming at this challenge thing from two different directions. wal thinks the challenges is kewl. the fact that josh asks you to do X amount o' damage with a bozar is kewl. tale, on the other hand, suggests that the digital trophy is the lure.

...

we don't get either pov, but is worth noting that you is talking different aspects. if gaider had suggested that we should play bg2 w/o using any healing spells, the game would not have been more worthy o' purchase... and if we had actual bothered to complete bg2 w/o use o' healing spells and our interplay/black isle message board account sudden became emblazoned with something likes a military ribbon bar, we woulda' been more embarrassed than proud. we don't get it... and we suspect that most non-gamers don't get it either.

is just plain sad if completionist trophies is the gamer's substitute for the rational and real rewards o' competition.

Yet it seems like the only thing that explains the odd behaviour.

To nobody in particular...

In the BG2 example, some are capable of making up their own challenges, others need to be spoon fed and handheld, because they either lack the skill or determination to make their own challenges.

I'm no psychologist, but isn't that the entire purpose of the "you are the chosen one" schtick (sp?) in the first place, trying to make the player feel warm and fuzzy by everybody gushing over you, telling you what a great and awesome person you are, girls swooning in your arms when tell them "nice dress... lets have sex?" etc. Some kind of very basic reward response for people doing what the game expects you to do, like a well trained and adjusted gamer on a leash. Achievements is just the latest addition to give you little bells and jingles when you do what the game wants you to do. Pavlov would be proud.

I still remember feeling like my breakfast coming up again halfway through NWN2 when everybody from Lord Nasher to some woman was fawning over me, telling me what a great guy I was and I knew it was as sincere as a politicians lies, scripted and obvious as it was. Maybe I'm just a sceptic.

Feel free to enlighten me: what exactly are the "real rewards" from playing computer games? And what makes them so much better than trophies/achievements?

is tough to tell if people is serious when they is speaking absurd.

costs millions o' dollars and loads o' man hours from highly skilled individuals to makes a modern video game, movie, tv show or other form o' entertainment. is not possible for Gromnir, or the average gamer, to makes an aaa game. we pay for obsidian skills. we get entertained... usually. so, what skillz is we paying for when we get challenges and achievements? why is an achievement or challenge developed by obsidian any more significant than a vol or gorth created achievement? if mk cannot see a difference, then we will be happy to set up a paypal account so you may subsidize Gromnir's new cottage industry: independent achievements. for a nominal fee, we will create a list o' challenges and appropriate rewards for your eventual success in completing. send you little signed certificates... maybe even some gold stars. isn't that swell?

any yutz can create challenges and achievements for a game that already exists. pay some yutz for the right feel warm and fuzzy 'cause we overcame a game computer game challenge? so, the question remains: are you serious?

Unfortunately for you, my dried husk of a human, I am a former sports coach and teacher. I _know_ I could do that and have them scrambling up and down trees or chasing squirrels in short order. Probably not immediately, but it's certainly feasible.

I any case, my hitlerjugend forming capabilities aside, the format works right now. People do commit time and energy to challenges. They do exhibit pride in them. in Red Orchestra my clan took enormous satisfaction in being able to prove they had shot x tank commanders from their cupolas. Others felt similarly about kills with the PTRD, and so on.

you is nuts. Gromnir has also coached (american football and rugby) and so we can again smell your crappola. at least tale suggests adding the medal/trophy/token aspect to makes more plausible.

and yeah, we is fully aware that gamers does indeed pursue and takes pride in such nonsense. that were the point. identifying challenge fascination as a highwater mark o' gamer absurdity would be pointless if gamers did not actual exhibit the behavior you indicate. duh.

Achievements are pointless and stupid except for looking at for five seconds after having beat a game. Since the rule is that there are hundreds of them and that you get one for doing anything for the first time, and again whenever a stat hits a round number, I don't even bother with that.

I'm glad I could clear this up for everyone.

Funnily enough all I smell is a man who hasn't mastered the arcane art of getting people to do things because they are fun and challenging. It's perfectly possible. _You_ simply can't do it. Which begs the question why you're so proud of that fact.

Although it does explain why you are so hostile to the suggestion that it's easy.
