Mass effect 2 and Dying True Rpgs

Recommended Posts

probably, true RPGs are games, which stand close to table-top RPGs in terms of gameplay :)

Apparently a "true rpg" is whatever you want it to be.

Maybe you should figure out what it means before you all throw it around like a holy relic.

I subscribe to Josh's definition by the way (IIRC he posted it on formspring), and by that definition, Mass Effect 2 is an RPG, though definitely light on some elements (like character advancement).

I hope, that the "players skipped 15% of conversations" thing will persuade Bioware to stop abusing the conversation wheel

On the subject of ME2, some may find this article (blatantly stolen from RPGWatch) interesting.

80% played as male Shepard? What is this i don't even.

The majority of gamers are male, still that doesn't mean that they did all their playthroughs as male.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I was more shocked that people played Soldier more than the other classes combined (less shocked that Engineer was the least played one.) I've had a lot more fun with sentinel and infiltrator, especially in Lair of the Shadow Broker (as I finally seem to have actually learned how to best use all of the Sentinel's abilities, and it's less of a 'tech armor + locust + tungsten ammo + warp when I need it' show than it used to be). I have the one soldier char that I don't rate pretty high, but the Revenant is fun (even if not that 'good').

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Engineer was fun and anyone who dislikes it is a communist.

Probly because Soldier is great at shooting and with the cooldown as it is, shooting is what you do for most of the game. All other classes are fun but the Soldier is the most functional.

Also, I hate that they took away heavy armor; bastards. ;)

The soldier's saving grace is being able to take Warp ammo as bonus. At higher difficulty level, simple pew-pew doesn't cut it anymore.

... Soldier gets incendiary (the best ammo type) and disruptor ammo already (and cryo, but that is, indeed, less useful on hardcore-insanity). Why on earth would you want to take a fourth ammo power? I can see boosting survivability through Geth Shield Boost or taking an activated offensive power like Reave (or mebbe Tali's shield jack, to hit the middle ground), but another ammo power? Nope, not computing!

I've personally found that the power cooldown system (including the upgrades) works out pretty well, so I've never felt 'forced' into just gunning. Maybe I just enjoy it so much that picking off occasional stragglers or debuffing satisfies me. :ermm:

It's funny. No matter how 'dumbed down' and 'stripped of choice' people call this game, everybody still apparently finds a completely different way to play it. :p

Unfortunately you can't kill Carth, mores the pity, though hopefully he gets eaten off screen by some peckish Rakatan. Carth Onasi: less balls than a 14 year old twilek girl.

Darkside female can kill him. It's a fitting reward for suffering through the 'romance'... even better than killing Carth Jr.

I think I may have told Carth to FOAD when I played a female as a cheaper alternative to vomiting over my computer and needing a new keyboard after talking to him. May also have been confused with the, ick, Carth redemption option which is reactivated by a mod.

Anyone have an opinion on the Lair of the Shadow Broker before I go through all the trouble of a ME1 replay to prepare?

Dude just look for a saved game online.

Maybe, some day, they'll release the entire collection of DLC's as a discounted "box set". Same thing for Dragon Age. I'll probably skip ME3 and DA2 and wait until they come as some packaged deal in the bargain bin. Might be a few years, but whats the hurry?

I have, yet again, they suck. There's a close one that's good, can't remember what I disliked about it.

Edit: On second check, there's only one thing wrong with it. The Bhatia body quest. I guess I can live with that.

Isn't there a save game editor around where you can tweak most things in the previous game?

Only save game editor I've found is for ME2. You can fiddle with the data it says you transferred, but some of what I want is for game start (extra XP and such).

I posted my opinion in the other thread (I saw this more as a 'what IS an RPG?' kind of discussion than ME2 specific...

I have a couple of meetings in the AM (which means starting now, and for some hours on), but I can post a gameplay-spoilerish review when I get away from those...

ME was a more or less ok light-RPG game. Not a game I would play again, but not one I didn't enjoy at all.

On the other hand, ME2 is far from being close to a RPG. It's played as a shooter, has the depth of story of a shooter, it is a shooter. Maybe a shooter with some originality (like having some minor powers and a bit of dialogues), but not a RPG.

Ah yes, the neverending battle of classification.

Can't you just say that you didn't like it instead of classifying it under a new snarky genre?
