More Reviews, What to expect

Recommended Posts

The only gaming reviews I generally speaking pay any kind of attention to is those that are actually printed. They typically have higher standards, while just about any clot can become a reviewer for online sites (Or so it seems).

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. I am quickly gaining a dislike for video game reviewers all-around. Too much subjectivity and not enough objectivity.

When you have almost every American reviewer playing the game like it was Gears of War then there seems to be a serious disconnect. I know that there have been some arguments on American vs. European reviewers but I mean come on. There is some proof there.

Now Jim Sterling from Destructoid is British and he hated the game. Problem is, I don't know if old Mr. Sterling does serious reviews or not. This is the same guy that trashed Assassin's Creed 2 and Heavy Rain and gave Deadly Premonition a 10/10 (Even though I love the game personally).

On the other hand, the guy at 1Up that gave the game a B+. Watch the video review, he is actually a British guy as well. Most of the good reviews for the game are from European sources.

Eh, sorry for the small rant. Point is, reviewers are just bad these days....

Don't know if he's Brittish or American, but Rich McCormick gave it 81% in PC Gamer, similar as Joakim Bennet gave Fallout 3. 81% is perfectly acceptable to me for this game, I'd set something similar asmuch as I love the game itself.

That is about the score I would give it as well. I am not blind and the game has some faults but they ALL have some faults.

AP is some of the most fun I have had in a while with a video game.

Edit: Except Yahtzee - and those are just comedy.
Too bad only those notice this who don't care about reviews. :sorcerer:

Actually, when I last read about it (admittedly, 5 years ago), there was no training required. You send in a review to the site you want to join, they read it through and if they like your style/review, you're in.

Heh, ouch, does'nt do much good for their credibility in my eyes I have no doubts there are exceptions to the rule though. I like the Swedish PCGamer team, many "oldtimers", quite a few of them that's been there for over a decade now. Good writing, reasonably objective aswell.

There is a crazy rift. I mean, I just can't wrap my head around the difference in opinions.

It is almost like they received different games

Yeah, I'm completely baffled.

What's even more baffling is that in my 2 playthroughs, I have hardly noticed any bugs. The ones that I have noticed are minor. The AI isn't the brightest ever, but it's not terrible. I simply don't see the gamebreaking bugs that many reviewers are criticizing. Hell, I don't even think the combat is that clunky, I found combat with the pistol to be very fun once your skill gets high enough.

Oh well, I'll just be an American who loves Alpha Protocol. :)

Yeah, I haven't seen all of the crazy stuff either. The only bugs I have seen are some AI glitches and a certain copter fight during a certain Endgame where the copter develops the sight of God and can see you behind cliffs.

Hell, the copter can see you if you don't move from the checkpoint start area. I must admit that I wanted to quit the game during that fight. The last mission is alright, except for that broken fight.

The reception so far in Argentina has been two guys (being me and my Fallout modder friend) are crazy about the game and no one else has heard of it. The only real magazine left here hasn't had the review up yet, but i suppose we're going the european way...

Yeah, it's sometimes hard to imagine we play the same game. Although most whine about the "massive reticule" and "I shoot and miss!" and I just know they know balls about the hit system (as in, wait to target, Deus Ex style).

What's broken about the chopper fight? That one has terrible accuracy. I don't think I have ever been hit by a single missile (although it did blow up trucks that then proceeded to blow me up).

I agree that that is such a stupid idiotic pathetic garbage hateful retarded scumbag evil satanic nazi like term ever created. At least top 5.

What's wrong? Dude, for some reason that fight was broken for me. If you do another playthrough, try this experiment. When you get to the checkpoint, don't move. Just sit there. No one else can see you but sure as hell in thirty seconds or so, you will hear a little lock-on beep and the chopper will start firing at you. If you try to use Shadow Operative, it will see you. Have teh ability that makes you invisible for a short time to turrets and cameras (Or delays them "seeing" you)? Too bad, the chopper will see you and start shooting missiles.

Not the first copter battle but the on on the last mission. The first one was fine, the Endgame one is just cheap. The games suggest that you should be able to sneak around, kill all of the guards, and fight the chopper. This in fact is impossible to do as the chopper will always see you and start firing.

It was so bad that I couldn't walk past the first enemy that walks behind the truck with out getting wasted immediately. It is no fun when the chopper is locked on to you AT ALL TIMES. Bull**** as a matter of fact.

Other than that fight, I love this game....

I guess that explains it. I don't sneak (too bad in that, impatient and stuff) so I generally keep running around, not sneaking. So when I heard the missile launch I was already way distant from the impact crater.

The 'still sees you when invisible' sounds like a bug though, although I don't quite see why you expect the turret/camera skill to help you here. It's manned after all...

Not really thinking that it would help but even if someone wanted to make the excuse that it picked you up on its sensors....

Well you know.... :(

Seriously though, it is not that I would think it would help, only that if it was a factor, it wasn't working.

Yeah, that whole fight seems bugged from a stealth character viewpoint.

Well, most bossfights seem.

How did you deal with the STRYKER?

The Striker was easy. I realized that I probably would not be able to hide from it since I had already blown stuff up and they were looking for me.

I had damn good pistol skill for my stealth guy and I just ran back and forth between cover and took my shots. You could still hide from the guards around it shooting at you.

That was one missing caveat that I failed to mention. You really can't stealth the guards in the Endgame chopper fight because EVERYBODY is alerted to you presence.

For the Stryker, it makes sense. It is pretty obvious that it can see you.

For that chopper fight, you can hide behind the small cliff where you get to the checkpoint and the chopper will still see you and every enemy will know where you are.

The AV Club gives it a C, applauding ambition but knocking it based on bugs. Surprise cameo appearance by an ex-Obsidz dev in the comments!

The vaunted conversation tree offers some nice surprises, but doesn

But... it's the exact same with the Stryker? I am not really getting it.

What prevents you from tranquing guards during the chopper attack that was still possible in the Stryker battle?

Although I just replayed that sequence and with the Stryker for some odd reason you do get the Binary Invisibility effect upon you from the tank, apparently it does act like a camera/auto-turret? :p
